    they were not sold as "toys" at all.  its easy to sit here in 2019 behind a keyboard and plant that suggestion but the Hornby 90s and other models were sold as "scale models" 30 odd years ago.  was the industry a toy industry back then?   I would say its not different to today being a mix of toy and model.

     

    from todays position it is easy to look back and say those old models were crude and lacked details and fidelity etc. but they were state of the art for the day and I don't see that that justifies calling them toys but that's just my view.  the modern day version might be something like the Thomas range. 

     

    However I do agree with how Walkes07's put it in that the new 90 does indeed make the old H one look like a toy (in unmodified form) but that's a different context which I do get.

    During the period of 'interim' management by the supermarket team at Hornby, one of them was quoted as saying they were positioned for the toy market, so that is sold as toys. To be realistic though no matter the level of detail, the skill and care of painting and lettering. even the craft of model engineering, when we take our trains and run them are we not playing? if we play are they not, in the end, big boys (and girls) toys?

    There was a frequent bus service to Swadlincote on Saturday and our own bus added to this on Sunday, with a bus stop right outside the door of the venue.

     

    its your choice not to come, but many people did arrive by train/bus with no problem at all.

    People i know came from the West Country and the North West by train with no problems

     

    There's a good chance that we will be at the the venue next year as despite the change of venue, our numbers through the door held up very well with the busiest Sunday i have seen at a DEMU Showcase.

     

     

    Hopefully I'll have the car next year.

    There is an abundance of free parking on or within 300 yds of the venue something that was not available for quite a few years at Burton Town Hall.

     

     

     

    As you were in Swadlincote and I was limited to going on Saturday and using the train I didn't go ;-( Nor did my son.

    Abundant free parking is no good if you're forced to travel by train.

    He'd be the one to understand the cost/return ratio, but it won't stop me and others wishing someone did them to Arrans level of quality so we could stick them on Hornby's KFA container wagon or WBF's PFA.

    The wagons are available from Wild Boar Fell as 3D Prints (Via Shapeways). What's needed is a good 20' Side Door container to put on it.

    Unfortunately, whilst you can get Plastic and Brass kits for the wagons there's only laser cut wood for the containers. I wasn't satisfied with the results when I painted them. C-Rail would be much better, but Arran doesn't feel there's enough of  a market to make it worthwhile.

  7. Put the chip vertically on its end against the back of the firebox sitting with one end in the recess in the chassis. Ran a new connector through the enlarged hole the original was fed through.

  8. Re the chip - an ESU V4 is too long when the fixing post in the smokebox (to attach the body) is taken into account/

  9. Thanks Hilux, I have that Diagram, unfortunately, whilst it shoes the front clip on the tender body, it doesn't show how the back is fixed. Whatever means they used I'm scared of applying too much force for fear of damaging it. it's certainly screwdriver resistant!

  10. Hi all, I'm fitting a P2 with a ESU V4 chip. Managed to get the body off the loco ok. but is anyone familiar with where the chip is supposed to fit? Also how does the tender body attach to its chassis at the back? There's no screw and I can find no clip so how's it fixed?

  11. Until 1957 the site of RAF Spadeadam (https://www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/stations/raf-spadeadam/) was a patch of boggy Moorland Known as Spadeadam Waste. In 1957 the site was acquired by the Air Ministry for the testing of Missile engines on specialist test stands (no missiles were ever launched from here). Spadeadam was not opened as an RAF station until after the cancellation of the Blue Streak Missile Program becoming RAF Spadeadam in 1976. From that time it was used as an Electronic warfare range used to scare pilots by letting them fly into the area for Reconnaissance or Ground attack missions against a variety of emitters which would attempt to lock them up simulating various types of SAM or AAA radar systems for them to then attempt to break lock, Jam or otherwise escape from. The nearest station was Gilsland (between 393 and 429 ft AMSL) which requires a significant climb to reach the station up the access road from the railway to the accommodation area. (928 ft AMSL)

    No airfield exists at Spadeadam (other than a decoy one for practice ground attack and PR missions (no live munitions are dropped on site) though a couple of areas are available for helicopter landings. By and large the entire area within the site is marsh and bog, the site boundary runs from Kielder Water in the East to slightly west of the Access road with the A69 in the south and the Waverly route being the rough Northern and Southern limits.

    A better route might be the Keilder branch (if you decide the reservoir was never built as all the line between Keilder Village and the Dam above Falstone is now underwater) which ran down the valley to Hexham. Alternatively extend the line that ran from Brampton Junction to Alston or Haltwhistle to Alston, though you'd have some fierce terrain between Alston and the S&C.

    The area around Alston had a number of Collieries (for traffic) and North of the Tyne valley there's plenty of scope for Forestry traffic. The trackbed would probably be singled though, with passing loops

All of these designs were done with Autodesk Inventor Pro.  No other drafting programs.  The texture is a big problem.  You can download the STL files from charles.dollins.org/buildings/ and look at them in the stl viewer program to see how they are done.  But I have to say that every slicer and every printer will give you different results as far as texture is concerned.  I am sorry I took so long to reply to this.  I am trying to get more people to do this type of stuff and so post on different forums.  I have developed a texture based on the Versailles pattern for stone work  It is cut stone, repetitive, but without continuous mortar lines.  They will not let me post it.

  13. Just sat down with a Horby P2 to chip it. I need to remove the Loco body but don't see an obvious body screw The datasheet shows 6 screws securing the wheelset to the chassis but (AFAICS) nothing fastening the body to the Chassis. anyone done this?

The British Army on the Rhine used to have a fleet of WW2 Warflats, with extensions to widen the decks, new bogies and air-brakes, which had been used to take AFVs to and from Luneburg Heath Training Area. With the winding-down of BAOR, these wagons became redundant; 81 of them were sent to the engineers' sidings at Eurotunnel's Cheriton terminal. Here, they were loaded on to road trailers, and taken to various locations in the UK.

    The Telegraph article suggested this was the first time AFVs had been transported through the Tunnel. In fact, during the Balkan conflict in the mid-1990s, a squadron of light tanks/ reconnaissance vehicles were sent by rail to Bari (Italy) for onward movement; rather than have them visible on flat wagons, they were loaded into ISO containers.

     

    This was the first time a Tank (which is outside the standard loading gauge) was sent by rail.

  15. Early last year the MOD made a trial move of military vehicles through the Channel tunnel, as reported in the Daily Telegraph. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/18/army-tests-sending-tanks-channel-tunnel-case-eastern-europe/

    The wagon used to move the Challenger tank (normally outside the loading gauge for the UK) was a bogie flat wagon with 2 six wheel bogies. Does anyone have any idea what this wagon is? I doubt it a UK wagon, but couldn't discern anything else from the picture.
