  1. if you look at issue 2 in this link you'll notice that the valances are a separate moulding.. should help make life a little easier for anyone wishing to do a conversion.. http://www.buildthemallard.com/collection.html regards Pete
  2. if following normal kit practice the DJH kit will require wheels, motor and gearbox at an extra cost, plus things like nameplates and decals which will come in the partworks package. 30801 I used the B&Q own brand varnish/paint remover successfully...cab it now soldered together... Pete
  3. varnish / paint remover worked for me...took a couple of hours although may have been less but it's difficult to see....only after I had done a test with some solder was i happy that the varnish had gone. I used some steel wool to check if the varnish had gone... not sure if this helped or if the job had already been done by the varnish remover. i have another cab etch sitting in a solution of caustic soda... looked untouched when I checked after a few hours so have left it in overnight... however it's possible that the varnish has already dissolved but unlike the varnish remover test that had some colour change the caustic soda test looks as it did when first put in. I'll take it out tomorrow and check to see if the varnish has dissolved or not...will report back here. Pete
  4. I found some copies in WHS Harrow.. I had to ask as I couldn't see them on the selves...they were hidden behind other collection type magazines, in my case 'bugs life' or something like that. They were on an end gondola at the other end of the shop away from the normal place, no way would anyone think of looking for them there....lol Pete
  5. I agree... take a leaf from Bob Symes, I picked up a copy of Model Rail this morning purely to read the article about him. he's 90 and planning new extensions for two of his garden railways...hell I didn't even know he was still alive?......good on him I say... Pete
  6. looks like an interesting project Barnaby...good luck with the build, I'm looking forward to future updates... Pete
  7. Love the video chaz....sound adds so much more to any layout..... top stuff Pete
  8. Hi guys Just a comment regarding cutting ply with a jigsaw... use Bosch T101AO wood blades for perfect cuts... turn the pendulum motion off and enjoy .... the teeth on these are similar to Japanese wood saws so for anyone familiar with those you'll know how well these jigsaw blades cut. regards Pete
  9. hi Gareth Welcome to the forum...I also have plans to build an 0 gauge layout in the future and being 53 I consider I have a little time left yet...I have built a loco, brake van and a point all without any difficulty and have a nice Martin Finney A1 awaiting my attention in the erecting shop. I think you'll find building your own track work will be a very enjoyable exercise, in fact I got more satisfaction from building the turnout than building the rolling stock, I think you'll find C&L's turnout kits in a bag very straight forward. Alas i suspect it will be some time yet before I am able to start my layout, too many other projects/interests that need my attention but I will get there at some point, have fun in your hobby and keep the forum updated with your progress. regards Pete
  10. Hi Rob Thanks for the heads up.... I best get collecting the various bits and pieces required to make the whole train..... got so many other things to finish first but it would probably be wise to start taking notes on what I need and who can provide the parts or do I need to scratch build myself.. no rush to build though........ Cheers Pete
  11. I got mine from Amazon Rob... £27.90 with free P&P which seemed pretty reasonable to me . Pete
  12. cheers Rob... I did see the listing for FS coaches, just didn't really know what they they were... btw I do have the book ' LNER passenger trains and formations' which IIRC you recommended to me in another thread. It does cover FS giving details of coaches and which locations they parted. I haven't had time to read it fully yet but intend to over xmas. I think my problem is not knowing enough about the different types of coaches involved, something I need to rectify in due course....I need more than 24 hours in a day....lol Kind regards Pete
  13. Thanks Rob... I'm trying to work out what may have been used for the first Flying Scotsman train in 1928....I like the look of your coach so if Kemilway do any that are suitable I think they will be my choice of manufacturer... looks like I also have some research to do.. no rush I have plenty of other work to get on before starting the train although it would be good to start collecting what i need... Cheers Pete
  14. Thanks Rob.... I know very little about rolling stock so it's nice to know what I'm looking at, hopefully I'll start to learn what's what.. are you modelling GNR or later as LNER, what trains/ services would these coaches typically operate on? Cheers Pete
  15. Hi Rob I've been looking through the thread and couldn't find which model you have from Kemilway's range, perhaps you'd be so kind as to give out those details or direct me to where they are if already supplied. Cheers Pete
  16. Great work Rob... I've been undecided which coaches to get for my Martin Finney Gresley A1 when I finally get around to starting it.... following your build thread I think I've found the answer... I love the detail on these models and your making them beautifully.... well done... Pete
  17. lovely looking layout Mike...it just goes to show what one can achieve in a small area... your modelling quality helps makes it shine too.. very nice... Regards Pete
  18. great photo's Chaz.... top layout...looks like you had a fun day... Pete
  19. Very nice Chaz... that's a great looking layout that you have constructed... you can be rightly proud of the finished article.... well done.. Pete
  20. loving your work chaz....fantastic attention to detail.... great stuff.. Pete
  21. ahhh. but not all of us are the same...my first venture into 7mm was with a Martin Finney Gresley A1 and corridor tender ( not started yet).. but then I didn't buy it as a venture into 7mm, it was more for the love of that particular locomotive which I was going to build as a display model and also for a little research to help in details with the 5" version that I'm building. However it rekindled my interest in model railways as a child with my grandfather in 00. So now I have two Connoisseur models, a LNER brake van and a J71 ( both built) and also a C&L 'point in a bag' kit which is also built, to which I shall add more in due course for a future railway once I get a little too old for regular use of the big stuff. Which I guess means that yes I did start in 7mm with a shed full of tools and a biscuit tin or two..... Regards Pete
  22. Debs on this forum supplied my gauges, very nice they are too. Also you can use templot to set the gauge for a replacement template to the C&L one that comes in the 'turnout in a bag' range. Just create a turnout to match the one in your chosen kit but with the gauge set at 31.5 mm instead of 32mm. It is very easy and templot is a must and no where near as daunting as it first looks, plus it's a free download. Pete Debs http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/user/13493-debs/
  23. I thought that until I built a C&L B6 turnout.. in doing so I discovered another great part to this hobby, a part that I suspect I'll get just as much if not more satisfaction from than building Loco's Give it a try, it's far easier than you may think.. oh and yes to 31.5mm...... Regards Pete
  24. nice work Giles.. I look forward to seeing further updates.. Pete
