  1. We have looked at many things however the Jag doesnt really give us what we want. Nice but i think we would get bored with the driving and the running costs. The other problem to bear in mind if buying an older car is the tax rules changed in march 2001 hence a feb 2001 car is worth slightly more than a post feb 2001 because the tax could go from £160 a year (based on engine size) to £400 a year (based on emissions). Something to bear in mind.
  2. Yes hope to come down the m5 tomorrow for a few hours. Got a little shopping list of bits i want to get from railroom electronics and i suspect Mr Heard will extract some money from me for something i never knew i needed.
  3. Glad i found this thread. We are looking at getting a nice usable 90s classic for a Sunday (or probably more likely) 2nd daily driver. The trouble is we cant decide what to go for. I would love something BL built but i know SWMBO hates them so sadly they are out. We both like Fords but have pretty much discounted early 90s ones due to rust as although we don't mind getting our hands dirty (first 3 cars i had which did nearly 200k collectively i did all the general servicing myself) bodywork repairs i find a right pain. Saying that we have looked at some of the last Ford Escorts as the 1.6 zetec unit is pretty good and solid and practical too. They are also pretty well equipped and practical. Then again the Focus ST170 is tempting as there is less of a rust issue (although it isn't eradicated) and fairly cheap for fantastic performance. Others cars we are considering are the Citroen Saxo VTR (As much fun as tuned mini IMHO, cheap and pretty reliable and virtually no rust to worry about) or one of the MG Z range (Head Gaskets). WE would prefer march 2001 however to avoid the tax hit. Given the classic motor show is now only a fortnight away I'm sure we will have a new set of ideas. Unless anyone else has a suggestion, Only caveat is it has to be practical and not cost a bomb to run or maintain and not Japanese as they do nothing for us.
  4. Thanks for that guys. I will admit i'm torn as personally ive always done it with a conventional panel however having operated another layout which uses the handset, the sheer simplicity of the wiring etc is worth the extra monetary cost and saving alot of hassle when it comes to wiring.
  5. I have exactly the same issue. I will admit i started building the layout before i had completely finished the insulation, the other trouble is its south facing so condensation was a problem for me. Remember any insulation is only as good as the weakest part so even if you have iron fortress walls if the door/window is a bad fit there really isnt much point.
  6. Hi Everyone Long time lurker here but i'm now getting to the stage of actually doing something. I'm going to use a NCE power cab for my control equipment however i cant see any accessory decoders listed? Can i use any accessory decoders or do i need to know a specific type? I have considered lots of other DCC systems however i feel the power cab fits my needs so would prefer not to have to change. In terms of the layout i'm using Peco Pl10 point motors and have the track feed wired up to a power bus system (layout is only 9x2 scenic section). Thanks
  7. Hi What size is the layout as i'm looking to do something similar but I'm struggling to visualise how i will get it all in. Also do you have any photos of the fiddle yard? Thanks Paul
  8. H Guys Just tried to book a ticket through the ticket factory but it says they aren't available. The note on the website says till 5pm on Thursday. Looks like a trip to Ian Allen on friday to get one if it doesn't work. Paul
  9. It does look very nice. Shame i wasnt able to get to Telford to see it. One question i do have is about the really useful boxes. What size do you have there as im looking for some to use as stock boxes but i cant decide on the size i need. Thanks Paul
  10. Just to say i placed an order for some diesel air horns about 10 days ago before i read this thread. Im happy to say the turned up on monday with a note saying sorry for the delay so it seems he is still despatching orders at this time. Good job i didnt go to paypal to get my money back too quickly as everywhere else is out of stock. Paul
  11. An interesting layout this. Ive been following your youtube videos for a while. Its nice to have a large space like that. One day i will get mine started. Paul

  14. Hi Thanks for that. I forgot about the old rmweb. I was just wondering what it would size to in N and to see if it would fit. It does fortunately so i will now adjust it slightly to suit my needs. Thanks Paul
  15. Hi I might have missed its but is there a track plan and dimensions of this layout anywhere. Ive read through each page (all 79 of them) and didnt see one. Thanks Paul
  16. There is a small model area upstairs in the Cardiff Antiques centre in Queens arcade?. Normally has some good stuff in, but it can be hit and miss. I havent been over to cardiff for a few months so maybe a trip over beckons. Paul
  17. Someones been to Portishead then I picked up a few sound chipped 31s from them, i was tempted by the 56 but i havent heard one in the flesh yet. I notice Rails also have them back in stock too. Paul
  18. 37/4s in intercity mainline werent that rare in south wales at all. 37430 Cwmbran carried the colour scheme and was Cardiff allocated till 1991 when shipped via Immingham to Scotland! 37431 was also around and this did have the petroleum logos on it. In terms of others they certainly made it down from Crewe to work the loco hauled Weymouth service later on and there were also the Laira 37/4s (417 and 420 come to mind) which worked the silver bullets. If Laira couldnt fix one they were normally sent to Canton for work. Paul
  19. Is watching the highlights of Todays BTCC action and Croft

None from what i could fathom and none ended up in the cornfield either. It was a honda 1-2 for the first two and plato won the third because he punted collard out of the way. Collard would have done the same thing though!

Rob doesn't forget though, he'll shuve plato off when Plato needs the points most...! MG better watch their mirrors closely.

  20. i think A319 G-DBCH hates me. Ive only seen it once compared to around 10 for all the others and then it goes tech just before im due to board it. What have i done to upset it?

Nikon are the Mercedes of camera manufacturers. There is just something so right about their product.

I should also point out my first camera was a Canon T70, then EOS500, EOS300D EOS350D EOS1100D. Cant say i wasnt a Canon man. So far the the D3100 has performed well with the shots i took outside earlier on.

  22. Canon or Nikon SLR?

  23. I've had my golf (to replace the troublesome civic) and its telling me it has a DPF fault already. Its only done 187 miles!!!

PITA. I actually do a commute that doesn't trouble a DPF but am back to a petrol anyway.

Id never have a merc (our fleet manager hates them with a passion, too expensive and unreliable with a poor diesel engine (we had some C classes a few years ago after having had mondeos for years, they werent highly regarded compared to the mondeos)). Id be better of using the wifes Focus RS. Done 23k and never put a foot wrong, shes also only on her second set of front rubbers. Can you tell im a blue oval man?

  24. The railfreight today videos/dvd set were available through the works a while back. They seem to come out occasionally. I seem to recall they were around £5 for the se which included ireland and the update. The only problem was the narrator would sometimes talk over the locos. Paul
  25. Has just recieved my new fleet car. A Honda Civic 2.2DTEC. The designers of this vehicle and engine should have unspeekable things happen to him!

in the week ive had it its been the local honda dealer every day with some fault. Also the rear wing halfway across the rear windscreen? Whats all that about? Im just pleased the fleet lease has taken mine as well as two others back (between three cars theyve logged 24 faults) and given me a Golf 2.0 Bluemotion SE :D

The guy who lives opposite us is a Honda Sales Manager and he said the new civic is brilliant when it works, trouble is most dont. He told me they went through 9 demonstrators before they got one that worked ok. And people tell me Hondas are reliable? Im normally a blue oval man but with their pricing going through the roof our fleet department is going german.
