  1. Done a few of those myself... and more in the cupboard waiting slightly more adventurous conversions (like a "Double Fairlie"!).
  2. Though that said, replacing the infill with concrete will I'm sure have made the wall stronger than it was before. Just thinking that the (concrete) former Saunderfoot Railway sea wall at Wiseman's Bridge is at a similar location in relation to prevailing winds/tides etc and survived this winter intact (though the concrete wall at Amroth, which is less sheltered, did not).
  3. Which inspired the opening of the "Small Railway" on the Isle of Sodor to collect the waste....
  4. I seem to remember about 20 years ago a train carrying salt shed its load along the WCML and a Black 5 with a steam lance was dispatched from Carnforth to evaporate(?) the salt away.
  5. I heard something recently about a village where flooding had cut the residents' car parking off from the rest of the road network, stranding the cars for a considerable period. A meeting was held in the village hall where people could offer suggestions to the problem. One young lad at the meeting had been given the telephone number of an officer in the Royal Marines when the Marines had visited his school, and suggested calling him to see if he could think of anything. Shortly afterwards the Marines arrived with landing craft, rescued the cars and refused payment from the villagers as it had gone down as a "training exercise"..
  6. Roger Penfold's (first) book on model railway electronics contains a speedometer circuit.
  7. Thanks! Don't know if it has been affected by the floods or not. Maybe in need of further investigation.... Richard
  8. There is (or was!) a road between the railway line and the houses - where the "spider" is now - so it should be possible to work on the houses without encroaching upon the railway line. As regards the reopening date, I suspect there may be a touch of the Scotty principle at work: "Mr Scott,do you always multiply your estimates by a factor of four?" "Aye, Captain. How else d'ye think I got my reputation as a miracle worker?" - TWOK "Ye dinnae tell him how long it's really gonna take, did ye? Ye'll never get a reputation as a miracle worker..." - "Relics" Though more honestly I think the mid-April date is a worst-case scenario allowing for disruptive weather etc and if they can get the line open before then, they will do so.
  9. Just viewed a property with approx 20' x 12' clear loft space. CJF once wrote that 20' x 12' was the maximum size layout one person could comfortably manage. Hmmm....

    1. AndyB

...based on 9" radii and trackus-maximus.

  10. Though presumably some of that work has been ongoing at the same time as the main works on the webcam (one of CK's earlier posts seemed to indicate a second concrete pump in action south of the station).
  11. Could you post the link to that? (That doesn't breach copyright) as I'm struggling to find it on Google. Many thanks Richard
  12. Despite a few glitches in setting up, a successful day at Kenavon '14! Get my breath back, then start planning the next one...

  13. Wallingford layout delivered safely to the Warehouse ready for tomorrow's exhibition. No,I didn't use a bike this time!

  14. In the case of the City, the NRM have exclusively sold City of Truro, with the wider releases being Bath and London.
  15. I thought I saw some mesh going down before yesterday's pour commenced. It also looks as if there is a vertical mesh at the front of the wall.
  16. Well, there was the building I made some years ago where the last wall to add the brick paper to was exactly the same shape and size as the last offcut of brick paper I had left. It wasn't until the glue had dried that I realised the brick courses were running vertically.....
  17. Good day out at the REME Museum today. :-)

  18. That small breach is so close to the main breach that it may be just as easy to re-lay it when they re-lay the main breach anyway. I may be wrong, but isn't that washout visible in the bottom right corner of the BBC webcam? Either way, it's pretty close to that as it's still on the section of wall where the footpath is lower.
  19. Also a correction that Sankley belongs to the Woking Miniature Railway Society, not Michael Webber.
  20. Not according to the picture Yorkie posted....
  21. Yes, I'm a little surprised they didn't build the wall itself up a bit higher first to help keep the water out.
  22. I suspect that this was probably the weakest section of the wall, owing to the lower footpath at this point (so the wall itself isn't as thick) and possibly outward thrust on the wall from the weight of the buildings behind it.
  23. I guess we now know who did this, then! http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/local-news/post-box-prank-mystifies-villagers-5874497
  24. They appeared to be pouring concrete into the gap yesterday...
  25. Found the PECO loco lift I thought I'd lost when I bought a replacement a few weeks ago. It was in "plain sight" all the time - on my desk, being used as a letter rack!
