Another ill thought out white elephant. it needs a darned sight more capability than 160km/hr if it is to have any real relevance and a welsh mountain is hardly the ideal location. It they are going to do it then start with somewhere level ish as in Lincolnshire or East Yorkshire.
You have obviously never been there. The entire area around the Washery and Nant Helen Opencast is a large flat plateau. It is mainly Farmland with one Village with isolated cottages, here and they're. It has excellent road links, especially with the A465, as extremely large Mining Equipment is regularly moved up and down the valley. It wouldn't take a lot of planning transporting Rail Vehicles in from the various Ports on the Bristol Channel.

Hi James
I heartily recommend the books by Greg McDonnell. I have a couple. Have a look for Passing Trains: The changing face of Canadian RailRoading, and Canadian Pacific: Stand Fast Craigellachie! Both are superb books. He has also published other books on Canada's Railroads.
All the best

A video of Colas Cl 70's 815 and 808. Top and Tailing a Coal Train into Aberthaw Power Station. Taken on the 2nd of August.

I believe it was 70806.
Thank you.

They could have saved themselves a fortune by refurbishing Landore.

Afternoon All.
The Neath Abbey Wharf to Leeds Stourton RMC Sand Train ran again on Wednesday Evening. The CL 70 was going like the Clappers through Port Talbot. Would anyone know the Loco on it by chance.
Many thanks in advance

The new Maliphant St Depot is now looking like a massive White Elephant! What a waste of money!

Did someone mention the Swansea Vale? Luckily a new book has just been published:
The July issue of Steam World has an article of Super D's running on the Western Region. It includes Paxton Street Super D's.

I will follow this with interest. If you would like to get a feel of this stretch of the line. I would heartily recommend: Working with LMS STEAM, by H C H Burgess. He started as an Apprentice Fitter at Paxton Street Shed in 1932 and would return to the Shed as a Mechanical Foreman in 1946. It is well worth a read.

It would be 70807 with this;

It was the loaded working - my photo in post #2023 is the returning empties.
Thank you for that.

Hi Guys
Yesterday around 19:50. I caught a fleeting glimpse of a Colas 70 powering away through Port Talbot, heading towards Cardiff. It wasn't on the Baglan Log Train, as that was still in the Log Sidings in Baglan. It looked like it was pulling Freightliner Coal Wagons! Would anyone know what and where it was going too and where had it come from?
Thanks Simon.

I travel up the A420 (Swindon to Oxford Road) fairly regularly. I've been keeping a lookout for the arrival of the first masts as the road passes under the GWML. Not a sausags. Anyway this Thursday Night, I travelled up towards Oxford. Again no change. However when I returned 5 hours later. There were Masts on the line to Swindon on either side of the bridge. Can never remember which is the Up or Down line though!

This was yesterday's train plan to and from Onllywn Washery. They would have passed through Severn Sisters to and from the Washery. The Aberthaw train did not run though.
-
There are usually around 4 Freight Trains a day to & from Onllwyn Washery. Out and back turns to Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen Opencast and to Aberthaw Power Station. If you look on Realtimetrains advanced search for Neath N & B Jn.
-
The masts are up at Maliphant St. Depot. Does that count!

My apologies Arthur.
Sorry I have been in work the last two nights. Yes, Alcan ran Rogerstone. Alcoa ran Waunarlwydd.

I have transported large Aluminium Ingots which were roughly that size by truck though. That's what got me thinking. I used to pick them up from Warrington and take to Newport and Swansea. Both sites are now long gone!
-
They could be Unprocessed Aluminium Ingots. They look to be abit too white and shiny to be Steel Slabs.
