  1. The "anti P4" posters on this thread need just turn up at a Scalefour Society show, holding a placard with their comment on it. Culprits will then be put in the stocks and asked challenging questions such as "why are your eyes so close together?", "name a railway company other than Bachmann or Hornby", "on a round roundy layout, which line is up and which down ? etc.

  2. I wonder if the wheelbase is the same as the Webb LNWR 2-4-2 tanks? The two locomotives look very similar.

    Mark,

the wheel sizes are near enough, but the L&Y had a longer coupled and much greater overall wheelbase. There isn't a preserved example of the LNWR 2-4-2 tanks (either version) to scan, which seems to be the RTR manufacturers preferred way of creating the model, so I would have thought it think it unlikely that they'll do one.

However, other than the Great Eastern, I don't know who used this wheel configuration so we'll have to wait and see.

  3. I didn't say that recognition was the only reason for modelling, but it is important to most people, even those that are happy in their own skin. To consider the opinions of others as irrelevant could be seen as arrogant.

As I said in an earlier posting, I shall never regard myself as having "made it", because I know that I can always do better. That doesn't mean that I might not be happy in my own skin. Likewise, I do appreciate it when someone says "that's well done".

  4. Almost: - at one show a trader had a lot of EFE buses displayed with a sign reading "OO Gauge Buses - £xx each, 2 for £yy"

One smart alec did ask him how easy it would be to convert them to EM... :senile:

Perhaps he was being ironic? Rather like the viewer who, when proudly told that the layout he was looking at was "OO scale" said "that'll be less than 4mm to the foot, then".

  5.

im not overly happy that the brass worm and cog are loose fits on the motor shaft and axle, the instructions say to use loctite but I would have prefered grub screws on them, Im not too keen on the mixing of brass and nylon gears aswel but we'll see how it goes.

i do like the flexible design of this gearbox however that will enable the motor to be mounted horizontal in the firebox

London Road Models do "swing link" motor mounts, that use steel worms with brass gears. They use a standard LRM 38:1 or 50:1 motor mount and gears with an extra 1:1 stage that swings about the layshaft of the first gear to give a variety of mounting positions.

Not as well know as the HL products, they rarely get a mention. I've just noticed that they have disappeared from the LRM online catalogue at www/londonroadmodels.co.uk. I'll have to get that put right.

  6. Euston/ Camden Bank has been done but unfortunately it's in the Antipodes. I know someone whose next project is St Pancras. There are at least two P4 models of Kings Cross in progress, then of course there are Jim's New Street and Mike Norris' Preston - both in P4.

I think I've started too late for this kind of project!

    Ian,

it is never too late to start, it's getting it finished that's the difficulty (although the best layouts are rarely finished, there is always something to improve/add).

IIRC Bill Richmond's layout was based on Tring, see MRJ issue 23.

Vincent Worthington is building a model of Camden Bank in his attic. There has been three articles in MRJ, issues 154, 172 and 193.

Unfortunately Euston got vandalised in the 1960s so we no longer have the original to admire or model.

  7. Hi Paul it looks cracking how does the front bogie compare to the old DJH D20 it was an absolute pile of you know what!!.

I have the made up kit somewhere in a box I always wanted to sort that S****Y front bogie out, the loco would never ever balnce correctly.

A similar thing would happen with the old G5 I know we had one on Stocksfield (Birtley MRC early eighties) and our loco builder the late Albert Teasdale built a new chassis, in fact if I recall he ended up virtually scratch building the complete loco and used the dome from the original G5 kit. As far as I know the club still run the loco

What's the wheelbase of the bogie?

LRM do the sprung one from a couple of their LNWR kits, with 6' 3" wheelbase, 3' 9" wheels. It's used in the Jubilee and Precursor Tank kits. The spung bogie axles take some of the loco front end weight and the bogie it is able to rotate and move radially.

The same design idea is used in the NER G1/LNER D23 kit. That is 6' 6" wheelbase, but isn't available as a separate item.

  8. Lovely here in East Suffolk, blue skies with light cloud and a gentle breeze.

Better than yesterday, even then I was able to set up one of the new portable baseboards in the garden, to check the correct location for the control panel and lighting gantry support. No such opportunities today, with guests for lunch and then a F1 Grand Prix to catch up with.

  9. Bought a class 23 Baby Deltic Heljan no 2300 for £89.95 plus £3.95 post yesterday- arrived today from Durham Trains of Stanley. The cheapest I've seen anywhere . Excellent service at a good price...

( The 'page' may change as new items are added.)

As has already been suggested, this should really be in the model shop guide forum. As I understand it the Smaller Suppliers forum is really intended for the small manufacturers who usually supply direct to their customers.

  10. It is now!

I'm only just back from Portugal. This is what happens when my back is turned!

Be careful Ivan, the blame mongers will make it all your fault for being out of the country. The search for scapecoats - rather than culprits - is already underway. Don't you just love the media at time like this.

  11. My frustration with football is the amount of time the media waste on it and the apparent importance attached to the livestyle of some of it's participants.

In the long run it's only a game and there are more important things in life.

  12. I was in Vancouver just a couple of days after the rioting there in June. Most notable was the reaction of the residents who were shocked by what had happened, voluntarily went to the site to help clean up and leave messages of support for the community. We were frequently asked if the event (a minor one by comparison with what is happening in London) had changed our view of Vancouver. We felt that the attitude of the residents we met was absolutely wonderful and strengthened our already positive view of Vancouver and it's people.

Contrast this with what's happening in London. All I seem to hear on the news is people blaming the police and the fire brigades for handling the problem badly and the politicians for creating a society that causes these problems.

My best wishes go out to anyone who has suffered in these appalling events and my strongest condemnation goes to those who are doing it, condone it or excuse it and especially those that know anyone who is involved and do nothing.

  13. Hi

Multipla for me is one of the ugliest, but plenty of other competition including the X6, Peugeot 1007, Smart Four 4 (or is that 4 Four, or For 4?).

    Keith

Ironic that these are/were all designs that put practicality, especially for city use in the case of the 1007, ahead of style. Not a good idea where image and style statement is the most important thing for today's driver/buyer.

  14. What is needed is an application that identifies who committed the offence (litter, graffiti, etc.) and sends their ID to the police, their employers, parents, etc.

The real problem is not identifying the problem and location and then telling someone else about it so that they can fix it, but developing a culture and social responsibility that stops this abuse of our country in the first place.

I've just returned from three weeks in western Canada, where litter is virtually non - existent and a social conscience seems very much more commonplace.

  15. I've just got back from three weeks in Canada, where it appears that the North American divisions of the far eastern brands are having a competition to produce the ugliest car. The Nissan Cube, Toyota FJ Cruiser and Kia Soul (I think there should be an R before that) and the Honda Element seem to be leading the way. The best Ford can manage is the Flex.

  16. What O'leary and Ryanair have done is to capitalise on air travellers greed for cheap flights, who don't consider/understand what they are getting into.

Sadly other airlines and industries are happy to follow their lead, as already mentioned. While you can put up with their flight "conditions" for a couple of hours, it becames much less acceptable for 8 or 9 hours, as we recently found when crammed into an Airbus 300 for a trip to Canada. The airline masqueraded as Thomas Cook so we thought would be okay, but turned out to be operated by Air Transat, at whose hands my sister had previously suffered.

Although the seat pitch was advertised at 32" as if this was some sort of benefit, we paid a further £39 each(each way) for extra legroom seats.

We got seats in the cross aisle (by the escape doors), which were used by all and sundry including the cabin crew with their trolleys, to get from one aisle to the other. A total waste of money/rip off. In addition the seats were so narrow that I couldn't turn sideways at all to get comfortable for a nap (the seat backs didn't recline), so how any "wider" passengers managed I cannot imagine. The attitude of the crew was such that we felt they thought the passengers were nothing but an inconvenience and did nothing to improve the flight experience.

By comparison, a flight to NZ last year with Air New Zealand was absolute luxury. We have decided that we will fly with proper airlines in future for any flight more than a couple of hours. For anything less it will still have to be a real bargain.

  17. The London Road Models device is a "rivet embosser" intended solely for embosssing half etched rivets consistently. It was originally devised for that purpose by John Hayes and described in MRJ. Although I have one, I have found that a suitable honed punch, used with a 2oz hammer (much more sophisticated than Coach :D) also works very well.

Rivetting tools or presses have a punch and an anvil or dolly and will produce rivets on full thickness material. I also have a GW Rivet Tool and have found it quite satisfactory for 4mm use, on the admittedly rare occasions I have needed to use it.
