Not sure what to use for couplings. Thinking that for now it can be used on the end of a train as it's only missing one coupling. In the future it could be made to be a translator between the old tension lock and any new method I start to use for couplings.

time marches on and I've now got a second ZRA from Neil Mason and it has been weathered and modified for 3 link couplings.
My plan is to do the same for the one end of my original wagon .

the roof also needs a file taking to it to remove the round vent that shouldn't be there.

after posting i was Looking for parts to fix the 2 ZRA vans

    i was told i would need http://www.lanarkshiremodels.com/lanarkshiremodelsandsupplieswebsite_139.htm

    best way to fix them?
    Which glue would work best?

    Workbench
Due to having multiple coaches with the same number I'm going to renumber some.
The coach numbers are as follows with their depot as listed in 1989 Platform 5 book:
    · 6x W5449 (LA) Mk2b TSO

    · 2x W13493 (OM) Mk2b FK

    · 2x W16084 which is not a Mk2 number but think it is a Mk2b BFK?

    · 1x E6524 (MA) micro buffet TSOT
    · 1x 5456 (OM) micro buffet TSOT in NSE but this is a TSO number

Also I have the following Mk2A BFKs
    · 1 x Hornby 17086 in NSE
    · 1 x Bachmann 17079 in NSE
    · 1 x Bachmann 14080 in Blue/Grey
    · 1 x Bachmann 17093 in Blue/Grey

    And finally

    · 1 x M34571 (Mainline) Not listed in 1989 Platform 5 book. Think this is a Mk1 BSK?

So obviously at least 8 coaches will need a renumber.

The big question is now what to renumber them all?
I'm wanting to have all Laira numbers if at all possible.
The Waterloo - Exeter rakes were 3 TSO, 2 BFK, TSOT, 3 TSO.

My Thoughts at the moment are to number the Lima TSOs as:
    5449
    5436
    5450
    5459
    5461
    5496

I have no idea what to do with the others, so if you have any ideas drop me a line.

with a full rake of 5 vintage Hornby FFA/FGA wagons i needed an assortment of 1980s ISO containers as a replacement for the aged Hornby boxes.
The plan was to get some of the Wild Boar containers until i saw the ready to use C-Rail-Intermodal offerings.
So whilst at the DEMU Showcase 2016 i purchased 4 of the C-Rail containers.

shown below are 2 balanced on the wagon before the lugs for the original containers are cut off.

just wondering what the best way will be to keep the new containers on the wagon?
Do i cut the lugs off or drill holes in the bottom of the new containers?

making my mixed bag of Lima and Hornby coaches look a little better.
painting corridor connection doors in the correct colours.

left to right 2 Lima, 1 Bachman and 1 Hornby mk2 coaches
I'm painting some B4 bogie springs red on clean coaches, and not bothered on the ones that have been weathered.
    cruel close up

Interiors may well get a lick of paint too.
should wheel bearings covers be yellow?

A quick picture of the 2 newest VEAs to arrive recently.
1 in the newer dark grey and yellow livery and another in red.
The latest red one comes fitted with a working flashing tail lamp.

unfortunately i will have to replace a missing buffer on one of the older vans that has got broken off at some point.
must also get round to fitting couplings too.
any ideas which buffers to use and where to get them?

    Blog
As all the pictures have disappeared and I’m not doing much with the railway due to other commitments the blog has not been updated for a while.
there will be a clearance soon due to downsizing and needing to shift my Dad’s layout and stock plus the other bits I really don’t need

just a few pictures of my VEA vans
2 on the left are weathered by Neil Mason, the other 2 (still needing a bit more work on the underframe) by myself.

Those white rims on the wheels need to go.
I also intend to get some new transfers from Fox and renumber 3 of these.

A couple of pictures of the small Hornby MSV and ZKV fleet.
Like many Hornby wagons not a faithful replica but guess it's as close as I'll get for now.
they still need to be weathered more.

also need to get some transfers so the TOPS panels can be changed so they have different numbers.

whilst out and about in Norfolk/Suffolk recently i keep seeing the DRS top and tail class 47s working to Lowestoft from Norwich.
wish i had a train like that, 2 cl 47s a DVT and 2 coaches, quality.
    pictures in my gallery
must be costing the TOC a fortune to run, but nice to see something other than a Sprinter

I've been making the Ratio concrete lineside huts recently to kill a bit of time.
Painting a realistic concrete colour is not easy but i hope i have captured the look of a decaying hut.
They seem to be all sorts of colours out in the real world.

the Lima PGAs in the background are waiting on the centre bulkhead being cut away.

i do think i should have painted the doors and windows green before glueing together though.
I'm unsure whether to glaze them or not, or leave them as if the glass has long since been smashed.

glued to a bit of card and some ballast and scatter added

recently bought is this 2nd hand Hornby class 47 body.

It's ETH fitted 47487 in original Intercity livery.
this will enable me to have another passenger train by swapping the body from my railfreight 47.
It is missing glazing and buffers, but I should be able to sort that out.
now I just need to find loads of pictures of the prototype and work out what i need to do and make up a shopping list.
Fans and grills are a must.

those of you who follow my ramblings and have looked at my poor photography in my galleries will have noticed that some of my old wagons have a really crude attempt at weathering, mostly done one bored day as a child in school holidays.
now the question is should i attempt to tidy these wagons up and see if i can make them look a little better or just leave them as they are and not worry?
if i want to clean them up wondering what would be best to use?
sand paper has cleaned up the worst of the mess on the TTAs and made them less shiny as a bonus

any way i'm going to get some Fox transfers for the TTAs to make them look better as the ones i used on my Yeoman PGA wagons were good way back in 1988 when i did those so they can get my business again
Just need to check up on where all the transfers go on a TTA now.

I added the transfers to the PGAs without any photographs, just using memory and a Lima example for guidance so they may not be 100% but then neither is the model!!

and the other wagons need some dirt too as they are far too shiny and need to look more like this!

so here is my attempt at my OAA and a VEA using some grey paint i mixed up myself to change the colour of the planks.
I've tried to fade the red a little also.

Also added some general muck and rust.

these two wagons have now gone back over to my Dad's as they don't fit with my era or the area I'm modelling.

they were 2 of the first wagons I tried to weather.

    moved onto the Seacow now.

after a little more playing about with track and photo copies of points i have reached a stage where i think i have a workable plan for the extension of the sidings to allow a loco to shunt wagons.

mock up on the kitchen floor to prove the theory, but the use of two 3 way points may be a bit over the top?
i may allow for 2 more sidings and have another try before fixing to any wood.
i also need to check the length of my longest wagons and locos to make sure i can fit them onto the yard.
I do think this is looking a bit straight and could do with a gentle curve.
it will need a hard standing area too.

I need a 47 for a freight train so i've dug out 2 Hornby class 47 bodies from the garage that need some work.

the first though has damage on the buffer beam and i was wondering if this was possible to repair easily

or should it just go in the bin?

    is it worth the effort?

the second needs the paint sorting and then new motor and bogies finding as these are beyond repair

what would be the best way to strip paint from the second example??

thanks in advance for the help

I may just use these bodies as a test bed for fitting grilles etc.
Would like to try to add fans and etched grills.

now thing that's bothering me is how to wire this up.
at the moment it is simple, loop with one Dc controler.
When I add the inner loop i'll need a second controller, no problem.
insulate at the points where the loops meet and run 2 trains no problems.
the sidings off to the shed and where i want to put a fuel point are my problem.
    a third controller?
    how to do it?

last time i did this was with Zero 1 so have rough idea what to do for DCC so will probaly wire for this for when i take the plunge and convert to new chips

in the interim need to figure out point motors and make a plan on how to do these, all ideas gratefully received.

Also I'm unsure about things like wire gauge and what cable to use.
What is the best wire to use?
    multi strand?
    solid core?
    With loops I don’t need a bus ?

must get some better pictures to show what i'm trying to do.

In my collection of Lima and Hornby Seacow ballast wagons I so far have 5 Lima YGH and 1 Hornby YGB.
The pictures show them as i weather them and detail them.

As I received them from Temeraire.

    The first stages of weathering.

The Lima versions need to be made a little more rusty looking.
The Hornby one came from Neil Mason and needs a little attention, its missing a head protector at one end and a sets of steps has broken off.
put side by side and you can tell they are by different manufacturers.

I really must find a photo of the inside of these wagons.
The Lima centre bulhead is higer than the Hornby one but i think they should both be cut down in reality.
I've also managed to lose a white plastic handrail on one of the Lima wagons which I will have to try and replace with some wire.

I thought about a small servicing depot for my locos so I've been having a try of the depot track plan to work out how much room it will take.
Allowing for the 2 shed roads to take 2 locos each and the fuel area to take either 3 TTAs or a loco I reckon that i can fit what i want onto a 2m by 30cm board.
I've laid the track out roughly on the kitchen table to get an idea, what do you think?

47378, 50043 and 56 try the depot for size.
obviously the setrack will go in favour of flexi.
also the concrete sleepered track will be wooden.
running it DC will be fun, lots of isolation needed i think. (complicated)
need to give some thought about which shed to use too, Hornby or Peco?
Also I'm not sure about the use of the 3 way points, they take up less room but do they look right?

Or has the whole TMD/loco service area been too over done?
    time to go and think.

A few pictures of my attempts to weather my VAA.
Railmatch faded red and my own mix of grime.

the first 2 pictures are the van out of the box.

i was going for a more faded almost pink look but it didnt work so wiped most of it off and left the Railmatch faded red on.
needs a bit more work but not bad as a start.
Also needs silver added to the buffers

I've been weathering a few new to me Hornby wagons picked up from ebay.
    2 OAAs and a MSV.
still a little bit to do to finish.
Lighting not very good in the garage though.

along side some other previously weathered wagons

and finally the sector OAA next to a "dutch" OCA and sector brake van.

the sector OAA is needing new TOPS transfers

I thought i'd join in and document my slow voyage from OO train set to model.
This is going to be a slow evolution so bear with me.
So starting with a Hornby train set picked up from Argos Clearance for £40 and bits and bobs from my childhood trainsets left at my Dad's.
The plan is to enable my daughter Ruby and I to run all my old stock from when i was a kid, plus what ever else i pick up along the way.
Then in time it will become a more serious model based around the late 1980's (the time i was at secondary school) located somewhere in the south west as i seem to have locos from that area.
I want it to be able to run
MoD trains to and from Salisbury Plain/Marchwood with my vans. the 50s from Waterloo and Paddington with my mk2 coaches 33s on Wales runs with the mk2 coaches 56 or 33 with the Yeoman PGAs oil trains with the TTAs engineers trains a HST now and again. Prototype locations in the south west are being looked at that will allow a small yard for shunting as I have loads of wagons and very few coaches though I am looking at getting a few more.
A layout name has yet to be chosen, so as this is not worthy of it's own layout thread, updates will randomly appear here.
All stock to be weathered and modified in time starting with the wagons. Renumbering of duplicate stock is also planned.

So as it stands this is a box opening layout for fun.
    sorry if this upsets anyone.
photo quality so far not brilliant either.
please feel free to chip in with help and advice for improvement.

    thanks for looking.

    Evening Pop Pickers.
In amongst the box of goodies i have brought back from my Dad's loft is a Hornby HST power car that has had an indentity change.
it's not the best job in the world, in fact it looks battered, but it is carrying a cast name plate Top of the Pops and is numbered 43002.
I have several 43010s so decided to change it, but as the InterWeb was not around and I didn't have a picture to work from i guessed about the nameplate and have since found out I guessed wrong

In time the nameplate can be moved.
there is also my detailed 47490 Bristol Bath Road and so far unmodified 50043 Eagle both in large logo.
not to mention 47378 in original Railfreight grey.
and there was I thinking that i had BR blue locos hidden away!
there are also 2 damaged Hornby 47 bodies in the box as well that may be repairable??
i'll attempt to take a couple of decent pictures and add them to my gallery.
also picked up a few more of my wagons that have been made dirty by the use of dirty paint flicked from a brush as they ran past!
as a kid i used to read Dad's Railway Modeller and see weathering mentioned but never fully got the jist so made up my own way of doing it with varying results that may have to be attended to!
there is also an Airfix class 31401 in BR blue that needs attention
