  1. Resurrecting an old thread…in the early 1970s, did the Diagram 702 Kitchen have the words “Kitchen Car” on the sides or simply “Kitchen”? Any advice greatly appreciated as I’m about to apply the transfers to my model.
  2. These are 3D printed. I’ve used them and been very pleased with the results. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202949000788
  3. I realise the ads help to pay for the site but I do object to scams like “Ecochip”. An American review extolling its supposed virtues when in reality it’s a gimmick with flashing LEDs. Surely this is false advertising…
  4. Thanks everyone. I’m repainting some coaches from that era so your help is much appreciated.
  5. I would like to know when the thin orange cantrail lining was introduced to BR coaching stock. From memory and checking old photos it might have been in the late 1980s or early1990s but could anyone confirm, please?
  6. I think the biggest drawback these days is the slow pace of ‘serious’ modelling. The younger generation has grown up with expectations of instant results in all they do. Waiting for paint to dry is not part of their agenda so they quickly lose interest. I speak as a father of a 16-year old who has done some modelling but prefers the instant gratification offered by video games and social media.
  7. Many thanks to both of you. That makes sense. It’s not mentioned in the accompanying notes!
  8. I’m about to build a 4mm Kitchen Car using Comet brass sides and wondered if anyone could tell me what the detail in the middle of the end window represents, please? I assume it’s a vent of some kind but I have yet to find a picture of the real thing to clarify. The earlier Diagram 701 did not have this feature, as far as I can see.
  9. I called the EMU a niche model because the real things had a very limited geographical range. You would never see one north of London or west of Reading whereas the Big Four reached far and wide over Great Britain. Tri-ang’s EM2 bogie was unique to that loco, Type 2s and 3s had a different shape. I should know, I used to have loads of them! I once replaced a motor bogie on an EM2 with a Type 3 bogie. It ran well but never looked right.
  10. I use Evo-stik Serious Glue when other adhesives let me down. It becomes firm after about 10 minutes which gives plenty of time for minor adjustments. When fully set it is not brittle like some superglues so will allow some degree of impact without coming undone. I used it to build a white metal tram that I later dropped (accidentally!) but nothing was damaged. It can also be used to fill gaps, like mastic. I’ve used it with brass, wood and plastic as well as white metal.
  11. I know Phil Radley has always offered a build and paint service, I am just surprised the major players have never previously offered a r-t-r model. Tri-ang did an SR EMU and a Woodhead EM2 which were quite niche back then. I’m sure an Underground set would have had similar appeal, even to non-southerners such as myself.
  12. I am amazed it has taken until 2022 for a ready-to-run model of the 1938 tube stock to be offered for general sale (ignoring the ancient Everyready toy). I would have bought one of these 50 years ago, had any been manufactured back then.
  13. Well, that was a short-lived service. It doesn’t even appear in the on-line timetables now.

    1938 Tube Stock

Two of the axles on Car C in my set are not rotating easily. I can’t see any obvious reason for this but the two power cars are struggling to get it moving. Car B is fine, free wheeling. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
  15. Very interesting report. The fault lies with Network Rail’s engineers as they were repeatedly warned of the poor condition of the bridge but failed to act in a timely manner.
  16. What era are you modelling? Current railway bridges usually have a bed of ballast and conventional track but 100 years or so ago you might have had longitudinal timber rail bearers instead of the usual sleepers.

Well, I ordered one from Kernow back in 2020 so I just hope they deliver. . .
  18. Remind me, how many years did it take for the Birdcage coaches to appear? And the Class 90?
  19. Whatever Hornby announce I won’t be holding my breath. No doubt it will be 2023 or later before anything is delivered. And as for Bachmann………
  20. The link takes me to the front page of RMWeb…?
  21. Hi, the bridge is still there, very much as seen in your photo. I was there today and attach a similar view. The bridge was shortened many, many years ago but it looks no different today from the first time I saw it in 1997.
