  1. A Bevel Gear set for the N20 type motors,

now popular, is available on ebay.co.uk

There is a 60rpm option of the motor available.

It is in Shapeways printed HP-NYLON material

  2. The choice of material has to be economic in 3D printing; to get a mirror

finish from the get-go can be very expensive

You can pay £40 or £80 for a set of prints depending on the finish of the

    material.

On 84998-84999 there was fine detail on the Buffer Ends that required

FUD for the supplied model: hence the expense and very limited market.

The 4mm SDJR No 25a Dazzler is a good case in point. it is difficult to bring it

to market for £150 - now who pays that for a colliery shunter kit!

With the NRM research and help of "The Man Himself at Didicot", I am proud
of what was achieved with the Pollen models..

  3. Would 3D printed gears have a sufficiently fine surface finish to avoid too much friction?

My personal preference would be for gears cut or moulded from a true engineering plastic, e.g.  Acetal/Delrin.

    This is for 14mm drivers.

I'm going for torque at low speeds with the SDJR 24a Writhlington "Dazzler"

The final 1:1 drive of the Bevel Gears is only 60 rpm - flat out (80 mph) rated for 12v !

Shapeways sell the material as suitable for moving parts and esp. in RC models..

  4. The SDJR 25a Dazzler in 4mm has so far entered it's 4th year.

When we talk about improvements, we started with just WSF and

FUD from Shapeways now we have FXD and the durability of

    HP-NYLON too.

The original project was redesigned to use the N20 type motor with a

gearbox; subsequently available with 60 rpm output on a 192:1 rotor.

    - they are plentiful and with considerable savings on cost, space.and the

added advantage of a considerable torque.

Now in just 7cms length of footplate on 14mm Drivers, we also have a clutter

free detailed Cab in 4mm scale - as it should be!

3D printing on commercial equipment is expensive. I did not rush into 3D printing

but first found models that lent themselves to the process. It is in the fine detail.

  5. "This picture features 3 different 3D print materials (Form 2 Grey Resin,
Premium WSF and HP Nylon), as well as cast resin parts, in 16mm scale. "

This is one of the features of designing for 3D.Printing; the selection of

materials for their particular attributes, where they are needed

The SDJR 25a Loco has 4 different materials used for the 3D print of parts..

  6. SORRY IF THIS IS POSTED TO WRONG STRING!

In the last month I have had two Orders via Shapeways LIC

successfully printed on their Eindhoven HP-Nylon machine.

When I place an order on a second account direct via Shapeways

Eindhoven - the same item - it is rejected as a "First Print" without

any further option of "Print It Anyway"

After an exchange of e-mails I have yet to connect with anyone who

understands the tweaks of their product beyond their "Bible".

Automated systems still need someone at the helm.

  7. Hi!

For the 4mm SDJR 25A I chose one of the N20 motors
on ebay with a gear box to provide plenty of torque.

Space is limited on an 0-4-2 and the motor had to be

tilted to get it totally enclosed by the saddle tank

and fire box.  12v models have gear boxes with 100,

    80&  60 rpm output.

I resorted to a bevel gear set. I wonder if this could also

be of use for 2mm locos, especially your pannier tank.

Shapeways now do NYLON on an HP Printer at their

Eindhoven location. - all orders on NY are currently

    sent there.

My drawings have progressed into Production and I am

currently waiting on their print of my gear sets.

The Hazelwood Models Sheaves come to order on size

And include detail of spoke nuts. The larger sizes run on

2mm or larger tube as bush inserts with the axles fixed to

The pithead structure. The 2mm scale wheels use 1mm rod

Into 2mm tube on the structure as bearings.

They are modelled on The Writhlington Wheels.

The ModelMaster set does not appear to provide for a

running pair of the POLLEN C.- enough for only one

    wagon is present

I have a rub-on sheet, with GWR Gray backing as carrier

for small print items; for the POLLEN C and with numbers

for the 3 sets produced. (per Tourett)

I have artwork for the "E" but have not had it printed.

"Wright Writes" looks like a case for treatment. It has become a

whole Forum within a Forum, and could be closed, and restarted

with contributors opening indexed threads; to tidy a situation

that looks like it has got out of hand.

"Little Didcot" is another that could go the same way.

Fortunate there is the "Search" function, but easier reads on a topic

    would be nice.
