[In response to Harlequin] Oh yes, done all that. An object lesson in overcomplication that succeeds in doing nothing, and it is particularly bad for searching removable drives. XP did it all, and 10 times faster.

I'm aware of alternatives, and I will probably be pursuing that route. Total Commander is well spoken of.

Windows 10 finished off any interest that I had in using my laptop for anything, didn't have a problem using XP but just found W.10 so frustrating I don't even bother turning the thing on these days. 

Don't worry,  Windows 11 will be much better
