  1. The only safe and solid way to put any sort of weight in the base of any sort of unit would be to make the base and unit framework as a one piece metal skeleton and then cladding it, thus impossible as flat pack. Any sort of furniture has a potential weak point at a joint. Any sort of furniture where the center of gravity is mobile (as in draws or doors) has a possible tip point so you should use caution and secure it to a wall and educate others to be careful and teach children not to climb on items not intended for climbing on

  2. At the speed that Bachmann have done the required work to upgrade/redesign the 158, by the time it comes out it will time to withdraw the real units. We may even be able to start the 158 preservation society by launching the new model (tongue in cheek).

In the words of a member of staff from the sadly missed Wakefield Model & Craft Shop "it will be here for Christmas, but which one?"

  3. I visited our local garden center at the beginning of October to find them putting up the displays of Christmas trees and Christmas lights. As November started so did the Christmas television ads, but fortunately SWMBO waits until she sees the Coke Cola Christmas ad ( Holidays a coming ) before demanding the Christmas decorations go up. At least the Christmas ads are better than all those b###dy internet gambling and bingo ads.

  4. Most of us model railways as a hobby for there own enjoyment, if they exhibit a layout it should be to show there modelling skill and to encourage  and inspire others. If there are any trophies or awards to be won then that is a bonus but these days more and more clubs are struggling to get enough members together to run an exhibition let alone organise voting / judging, purchase or arranging return of trophies and finally the presentation.

Having been awarded trophies at exhibitions in the past on a few occasions I can't say I didn't find it gratifying, however the real  bonus was being invited to show my layout and stock in the first place.

  5. I've never heard of track going dead, usually it is a dry joint where a feed wire connects to the rail or a dodgy point. Usually the only regular maintenance needed is track cleaning which is best done with a fluid cleaner, if you use an abrasive cleaner it causes micro scratches in the railhead meaning it will get dirty quicker and become harder to fully clean.

  6. When Hornby bought the former Dapol OO tooling did they aquire the 150/2, and if they did they could use it as a basis to create several mid 80s electric units such as 318s and 455s or with a little more retooling 320s 321s 322s and 456s.

As for super detailed models a modern spec class 86 (as the Heljan model fell short of expectations) and a class 58 (with a suitably modified cab interior to the same standard as the superb class 60 as again the Heljan model is not to that high a standard).

  7. If you are looking for info and photos of departmental rolling stock you could try the "departmentals.com" web site (no connection other than use it for info and photos myself). I seem to remember Model Rail magazine having an article on modelling a pair of NSE translator vans a few years ago.

Bachmann have made some rtr models of barrier vehicles in mk1 & mk2 if you can find them but they are quite expensive .

  8. The issue of mechanical failures leading to drivers  ending up with grid penalties is stupid. When D.R's engine blew last week, because he pulled up he will get a grid penalty yet if he'd crashed and required a new engine he wouldn't b be penalised.

Surely a better idea would be to deduct points from the constructers for mechanical failures.
