  1. How can you forget..."just don't mention the war!"
  2. The first coat of scenic water dried quite thin in parts so a second coat has been added this evening.
  3. Looking forward to seeing this layout again at Weston on Trent on Saturday 12th November.
  4. The only Metcalfe kits planned for the build are the retaining walls that will be used to separate the station area from the raised sea front road that will run behind. This evening, when I should have been preparing Skaleby West for an exhibition, I became distracted by experimenting with the track layout for Skaleby Quay. Here is the latest idea. In the centre is the line that will run into the station platform complete with run round loop. This could be accessed by a three way point on the extreme right of the layout as shown in the photograph. To the front a point will run off the run round loop and access one long siding, which could become two. This will be the quayside and will be used by fish traffic. To the rear the right fork of the three way point will serve a bay platform with a siding running off to a goods shed.
  5. Angel Eyes - The Jeff Healey Band
  6. Evening all. Generic greetings and wishes to you all. I have missed a few days again so I am once again playing catch up. Apologies for any major birthdays, anniversaries or other events I may have missed. This week has been another busy one with not enough sleep, or enough time to do everything. The school's model railway show is just a week away. I have left quite a bit of work until the last minute. Thankfully the show guide is now almost done after a couple of late nights in front of the computer. My layout has a number of repair jobs still to do. Hopefully this weekend will provide the time to do them...but I won't hold my breath. There are four bottles of real ale awaiting consumption if my daughter ever goes to sleep!!
  7. Strawberry spillage everywhere
  8. The new buildings look like they fit the space well.
  9. Will pick some DAS up over the weekend.
  10. Thanks Andy. I will give it a try.
  11. The first baseboard is now built and is sat on the floor of the spare room. I have started to play around with the track plan. The plan is to have a station, sidings for fish traffic and a further siding for general freight. I think that there may need to be a three way point at the bottom of the baseboard. The left and central sections of the point could lead into the station and run round loop with the right hand section leading to bay platform and general freight area. From the loop there will be at least one siding for the fish traffic. This is an alternative to the track plan displayed earlier.
  12. With just over a week to go until the Weston on Trent show I have found some time to tackle some more scenic tasks. Firstly some Woodland Scenics "Scenic Water" has been added to the river bed. This has been left to dry before the final scenic additions are made to the water area. Last year, the area around the new tunnel was presented in half finished form. The brown undercoat was visible in large areas. Tonight I have treated some of it to some great acrylic paint in the hope it will represent a rocky outcrop. I am not sure it really works so I may have to turn to the Woodland Scenics Rock kit.
  13. Looking forward to seeing Ashbourne Midland at the Weston on Trent show on Saturday 12th November.
  14. As the organiser of the Weston show I would like to thank you for offering to bring the layout over and support our school event. We are looking forward to seeing you on the day.
  15. Funny you should say that I answered an advert for one of these and all I got was a new mobile phone!
  16. First you should hit the comedy section.
  17. Does that explain the lack of posts recently? Eyes glued to the television screen?
  18. A quick drop in before bed to wish Ian and Sherry a happy anniversary. I also hope Jamie has had an enjoyable birthday. Thanks to those who have posted advice about my health issues. I know I need to make an effort to eat, drink and sleep better. At the age of 41 I cannot take the liberties I have in the past. The situation cannot be helped by work stress and a lack of exercise. My five a side footballing days seem to be lost to an Achilles injury too. Today has been enjoyable, helped by Derby actually scoring some goals and winning a game. Sarah and I found some valuable time in the evening for our usual Saturday meal together. She is tired having been woken by Amber for a number of consecutive nights. I am hoping that, once Amber returns to school next week, she will find a bit of time to rest and recharge. Night all - make the most of the "extra hour".
  19. I hear rumours that a certain Mr Pearson is talking to Wolves. It could make next week's trip to Molineux interesting. For today we got some of the luck that had deserted us all season. Definitely second best in the early stages, should have conceded an early penalty and possibly gone down to ten men. However we created more chances than in several games under Pearson and won the game 2-0. The "Derby Way" is starting to resurface in patches. All we need now is Stevie Mac to realise that Tom Ince is a waste of space and we can make real progress. For now, I will be happy with a run of one defeat in six and the fact we have gone above Nottingham Florest in the table.
  20. On the subject of the mini-Marylebone mentioned in this post - the discovery of a high pressure water main under the site of the proposed building prevented it being built. The museum site has a different footprint entirely.
  21. No surprise at all. Proves what I was saying earlier in the thread. Hornby need to develop train sets with play value. The old car loading ramps or stone loader could also be incorporated into a similar type of set. Interesting how these sets all feature the 0-4-0 though. It was only a few years ago that the postal set featured the Railroad Jinty. As regards the clerestory coaches. I don't think they ever had an interior. I remember them being dreadfully light.
  22. Morning all. Happy Birthday to Jamie. I hope you have an enjoyable day. Chrisf: I hope you enjoy the show this evening. To all of those venturing to exhibitions this weekend I hope you have an enjoyable visit and the wallets take the appropriate damage. In terms of exhibitions this weekend is my calm before the storm. I am not visiting any! However next weekend there is the mini exhibition at Derby Silk Mill Museum on Saturday. This marks the "temporary" closure of the museum's model railway whilst I renovation work takes place. The railway will be operating and there will be some visiting layouts too. On Sunday it is the Burton Rail-ex event at the National Brewery Museum. It is always an enjoyable show. It also represents the final chance to pass out leaflets for our exhibition which takes place two weeks today! Better get the floor plan finished. Yesterday proved to be quite mixed. We went into Derby to view the history of children's television exhibition at the museum. It was ok, with some memories evoked. Most of the exhibits were replicas although there was an original Colonel White puppet from Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet which was the highlight for me. Amber became very restless so we cut short the planned shopping trip and skipped the pub lunch. This did not help Sarah's dark mood. Fortunately my parents came to the rescue in the afternoon and had Amber to stay for a couple of hours so we could do some discrete Christmas toy shopping. We made sure a pub lunch was thrown in too. I think the time together did us both good, and Amber enjoyed a busy afternoon with her Nanna. Last night I caught up with my old friend Mark. A couple of drinks in the pub, made more enjoyable by the fact Hobgoblin was the guest ale. It may be the reason for the headache this morning. The ale consumed this week has not helped the bladder issues either. I must remember to balance the beer, coffee and tea with water! Enjoy your day.
  23. Erm....it doesn't. But it doesn't detract from them either. It is about the quality of the displays within.
  24. I like the building. It is a modern building for a modern museum, next to a station that is the most modern on the railway. When complete it will become an attraction in its own right. Without doubt it will bring more people to the Great Central and hopefully put more people on the trains as museum visitors will probably combine their visit with a trip on the line. It will also make Leicester North a valid destination with more passengers breaking their journey there. It will make the G.C a day out for families. The museum will also bring iconic G.C engines such as Butler Henderson, the O4 and Green Arrow onto wider display. If you wind back a few years and consider Highley Station on the Severn Valley. It was a country station patronised by only a few people each day. Now it is one of the most used stops on the line after the opening of the Engine House. This building is a modern one too. But it has done a lot of good for the Severn Valley. I am sure the Leicester museum will do as much, if not more for the G.C. Those who wish to complain about the design should think more carefully about the benefits it will bring.
