  1. I have a parcel coming with a courier.

They have sent me an email telling me the parcel is at their sortation facility.

I wanted to hit the funny button but I know how disheartening these things can be. I've had a packet of face masks left at the post office needing a signature and a medium-format camera dumped beside the front door step.

The parcel arrived safely. They sent another email to explain, "the parcel has been delivered today" which was a bit of an anticlimax. I guess they used the passive voice to distance themselves from the post-sortation transit activity or whatever they would really like to call it.

  3. RMweb is now, for all intents and purposes, unusable.

I have kept away for a while hoping things would get better. Today I have had topic pages load in 2 seconds while a custom activity stream took 39 seconds. Perhaps the delays will let me post better things; there is plenty of time to ponder what to write.

Well done. I used to do this but the last time there were complications and they asked me to stop. For anyone wanting to start, it's very easy to do.

  5. Dear Lord Woody

    Chris here at Minerva.

All emails received during our holiday shutdown have been answered and replied as appropriate.

As you choose not to reveal your actual name, I have no way of checking to see if we have missed anyone, or if we have assumed that no reply was necessary.

So who are you please so that we can see if anything has been missed.

    Chris B

With a very public topic now locked a public message seems sensible to show the efforts of our smaller suppliers.

  6. We've entered the "firework season" once more.  Eleven evenings of incessant bangs until the fifth and another x evenings because the fifth is midweek and they want to "party" at the weekend...

Fireworks kill birds - they die of fright. There is no case for fireworks as a source of entertainment, whether in back gardens or organised displays. Time to get rid of them and move on.

  7. I am in a bit of a dilemma about my car, it is 13 years old the question is do I get it repaired or do I spend money buying a newer car, as I feel if the cost of the repairs is greater than the current value of the car is it worth doing. I cannot make my mind up.

It sounds like this Kia is wearing out too soon. My last MX-5 was 13 years old at 104,000 miles when it needed its first repair - a new radiator. I had the work done but bought a new car three months later; funny thing is I decided I really wanted air con, which the old car didn't have. I would leave the air con broken and have a look at 3 to 4 year old s/h cars. (Edit: I'm guessing some of your "bills" are not routine service items).

  8. Why can so many sellers on ebay not be bothered to leave feedback? It's only a small niggle, but maybe I'll be petty and shop elsewhere.

I sell on eBay from time to time and for me, the feedback from buyers is more important - it's the best confirmation of delivery and satisfaction. As a seller, I find it difficult to  know what to write for a buyer, but I do always leave a simple thank you message.

  9. Just had yet another call from Eon to fit a smart meter. Found it difficult not to lose my rag, but just held on!

Eon bombarded me with emails, texts and calls. Eventually I told the caller I didn't want a smart meter because there is no business case for the household to have one. She told me she did not understand, I replied I want to boil the kettle when it suits me not during cheap hours, she still did not understand and the call ended soon afterwards. I'm with Octopus now, too early to give a verdict.

  10. Is there any point in listing old Hornby/Bachmann boxes on eBay? I see lots for sale but not sure how many people buy them, or if I should just throw it all in the recycling?

    1. 47137

      47137

I have only ever listed one empty box in eBay and it sold for around £10, within a week. There are lots of unboxed models for sale at shows, maybe people want a box to make their latest purchase "complete". So I'd list your boxes, see what happens.

  11. I can see more people are responding to blog entries thanks to the way the Activity Streams work.

You cannot check your own work, and if blog entries receive more views then they should get more comments too, and this can only encourage collaborative working. Good.

Equally unhelpfully, my Android phone works fine with the full and web versions.

The world does seem to becoming a cold place. I had an email last year entitled 'end of contract' but the chap did give me five weeks notice. I'm very sorry for you.

  14. Someone went into the back of me today, tried to say I rolled back - I pointed to the lack of gear stick on my automatic...numberplate got and reported. LOLvo undamaged seemingly.

    1. 47137

      47137

A guy drove into the back of me last year, and said, "doesn't matter ... it's only a six year old car"! Then said he had no insurance, so I asked for cash on the spot and got it.

  15. Bad day today. My beloved 1993 Rover 214Si (owned from new, now 194,000 miles) blew it's head gasket today. Gutted. 300+ notes to fix. Hate the idea of scrapping her

    1. 47137

      47137

Treat it as a chance to look at the top of the engine, maybe clean up the valve seats. The 214 lacks the fripperies that fail and send much newer cars to scrap; view it more as a mid-life overhaul. My Dad had a 214SEi for 10+ years, also from new; a spacious and comfy car which never let him down.
