  1. Hi all,

I have done a fair bit of digging around but still cannot find a complete answer!

I am modelling a Cardiff - Portsmouth Mk1 rake in the late 80s. Obviously Blue Crompton, B/G stock.

Formations I'm fine with, I have settled on SK-SO-BSK-CK-SK with an additional BG as required. Whilst the SO might not have been common, it was included in the pack of 4 off ebay so it's in the rake!

What I need help with is coach numbers, particularly the prefix letter. The new packaged Bachmann model comes with coach numbers M25704 (SK), M4439 (SO) M35322 (BSK). The older packaged models of which I have two are E16241 (CK) and E26140 (SK).

I am no number cruncher, but using a bit of common sense I'd say the E stands for Eastern region and M for Midland. I assume this is to do with where the stock is maintained. Further common sense usage (using up my quota here) would suggest that Cardiff-Pompey stock would be Western Region 'W', in general.

what did you decide on in the end?

    Hi ess1uk Interesting...!

I've just been going through my 3 billion photos   I can only find MK3 with Yellow Springs, MK2 with Red Springs, and the only one I have come across with Blue Springs are on MK1 Test Barrier Coach... interesting, not sure if it helps or not, I'll keep looking at my photos if I can find any MK2's with Blue Springs, I'm on a mission to find Blue springs on a MK2 ha-ha.

Interesting 'keefer' said about the springs colours, I've leant something.

    Regards

    Jamie

think that mk2 generator vans used with HSTs had B5 bogies which may of had blue springs?

I’ve been looking at pictures of bogies on Mk2s to see if I could spot what colours the springs would be. Found a few that were red but no blue.

Painting some of mine red on the cleaner coaches and not bothering on coaches that are weathered.

    how's the coaches coming along?

  3. That's true, but last I heard following work to the OLE they will very soon (if not already) be operating up to 125mph between Paddington and Airport Jcn.

Likewise upgrading the OLE south of Bedford remains in the latest Enhancements Delivery Plan )pg32), to allow for bi-modes:

"To provide speed capability to the OLE system between London St Pancras to Bedford South Junction, to allow electric rolling stock to operate at the published permanent speed restriction"

I think there was talk of converting some of the headspans to portals, as has recently taken place at Connington:

That also mentions electric trains from Market Harborough?
