  1. “Honey I shrunk the Mallard” or “ you’re trains are so dirty, I thought I’d clean it. Put it in the tumble drier and look what happened!”
  2. Don’t forget that in the Castlecary accident of 1938, the A3 was on and Edinburgh to Glasgow service, the Scott on a Dundee to Glasgow working.
  3. I think you are right. The s15 being a two cylinder 460 and Urie was close enough to the Drummond “school” to keep the whistle etc of noise making apparatus.
  4. Thank you for the link to the manual. The one I got with the controller does not have this. Grrrrrrr.
  5. Hi, Many thanks for replying. I’ve got the power from the transformer to the control unit. I was anxious about damaging the system before I had got started. when I see a number of points to attach wires at the back of the control unit and no clear instructions (probably as it’s so basic) in the manual I cannot see any description of what the letters beside the connections mean.
  6. Hi, Im very new to Dcc but keen to learn. In the future I hope to chip by dc Highland small Ben and highland Castle. Both classes long gone before the days of sound recording. I presume sound for a Drummond T9 would be good to represent the Small Ben( a Drummond loco, two inside cylinder 440). As regards the Highland castle a two outside cylinder 460 - any ideas? thanks
  7. Hello, Stupid newbie to Dcc here. I’ve got a lens 101 and 5amp boater for my small O gauge terminus layout. My problem is that I did not realise there was no cabling to connect the control unit to the transformer, and of course the control unit to the track - this should not be a problem, I will be able to use some of the wire I used for dc connections ? it’s been suggested that any 5amp cable would be fine to connect both. Is there a specification for the connections I need to get to connect the cables to each unit? many thanks
  8. In a 1970s edition of railway modeller, an article by Ronnie Cockburn (of the Bearsden wagon works) wrote an article on the conversion of an earlier triang M7 to a 439. if you are a subscriber to railway modeller you will be able access it, and all backscanned RMs - joy and jubilation!
  9. The lower adage ones I was looking at were Gaugemaster but Lenz appeals.
  10. A girly small 24 feet long end to end layout. A couple of Hexham diesels and a couple of lee marsh steam locos.
  11. Out of stock/ sold out and delays in restocking.
  12. I have read (OS Nock and Jack Kernahan) that large locos at Glasgow central were used on Cathcart circle trains in order to turn them, or that they ran Light engine tender first around the circle to return facing southwards at Glasgow central. it this correct and are there any photos? At first thought it sounds reasonable, given that the Port Eglinton accident on the sou’west may have had tender running as a contributory factor, a well as the tight curves on the Cathcart circle I do wonder.
  13. Hello, I am thinking about moving to Dcc as I model in 0 gauge. I cannot see any 5 amp controllers available so am considering buying a 2 amp controller and a 5 amp booster. Are there likely to be any issues with this or is this The Done Thing in such circumstances?
  14. I think the position of vehicles where staff are standing and required to walk around would make more sense for comfort at the front of a train, rather than the rear, due to the motion. (Same reason as the guards vehicle would be central in day a fast scheduled milk train. A slower running freight would be less of an issue. Were tpo crews required to have sealers?
  15. It was the Highland tpo which was the most interesting one for me, but I recall watching the Glasgow mail coaches at central too. Of course the Cathcart circle would have been ideal to turn the west coast postal at the Glasgow end and turn the loco too perhaps). The photo of the jubilee at kittybrewster - nectar for a Friday morning!
  16. Hello, Could anyone advise where a tpo with pick up nets / drop off apparatus would be located in a train? Randomly/ at the loco end/ at the tail? also, did such tops ever run in a mixed mail/passenger train in the 20th century? thanks in advance
  17. I’m sure there was something on the Caledonian railway around the end of the 19th century. An earlier mail train robbery.
  18. Errrr. Yes, but I don’t recall a poster saying “watch the later at James Bond film. “ with no name. I think you’ll find the posters have the name of the film and given that at least four were made before the end of steam on BR suitable for models from the early 1960s.
  19. Happisborough ?sic? Is one I recall, with the Conservative poster on a large billboard. Is it introducing controversial concept? I don’t think so, and regardless of the party, dates the scene. I also recall a more modern industrial science, set in South Wales with a James Bond film poster - another way to date a layout.
  20. 29 pages so for of cliches. Some examples are cringeworthy, some can be justified but of course we are probably well acquainted with the original idea, which has now become a cliche. We, if not experts then as acquainted with the reality may not be the audience the “cliches” are intended to amuse. A blue painted E2 with a face might raise our blood pressure but will amuse small people. Count the rabbits/foxes? Smile at “Sue, Grabbit and Runne” solicitors - keeps many passing and paying visitors amused.
  21. As an exMatelot I could get my t*ts in a tangle about the design of the ever present canal and narrow boat. A cliche and the lack of a facility to turn said narrow boat. The lack of mooring lines on boats alongside. The Clyde puffers who negotiated Lands end or the Pentland Firth to reach the south of England…. mat least they have tried, which deserves credit.
  22. Yes she is, but the poster stated that OWL was a racist. The poster. He has been challenged to provide evidence. He has not, unless he has done so to moderators off site. Is it acceptable for a statement against a dead individual be allowed to stand?
  23. I have asked the moderators to look into an allegation of racism, and who has been asked to substantiate these allegations. I am sure the will do this, if they have not done so already.
  24. But is portraying a cottage (or any other property) occupied by poor people glorifying it? Indeed is modelling a vast mansion glorifying wealth? Or, of on the same layout as poor peoples houses showing the disparity of wealth in the area modelled? to the ultimate, are clean locomotives glorifying the poor conditions of loco cleaners?
  25. Segregation happened in some parts of some states in the US in a specific timeline. How it is portrayed if a modeller wishes to, when signage to scale would be minuscule may only be explained in a blurb about the layout. Likewise any layout, particularly in the western US was likely on land appropriated from Native Americans. Should an explanation be given? For west coast US the treatment of Chinese labourers? And here in the UK the treatment of particularly Irish labourers…… Then again, let’s just play trains.
