  1. The latest show on the Kentish branch line was interesting, but did it need a trigger warning "shows historic footage of war". Hardly footage of the Holocaust or dead bodies.
  2. It's not a question of unions good or bad. Unions were, and unions are. They exist to help Thier members. Why did the GWR construct brake vans with a verandah at only one end when from 1923 at least the other three companies did not. Why was the GWR toad withdrawn from general and cross region routes in the early 1960s long before the demise of unfitted freight trains? Why were the blue Pullman's not adopted and subject to less success? There were issues with rail unions- I do not know what why or how. If I wish to model a N7 alterations to the cab may be required. I don't need to know why but if I'm told to accept it and just play - I'll ask why. Political? Well most of the branch lines we may model are no more because of political decisions. Like many enthusiasts I'll read about railway accidents, not because I have a morbid interest in death and destruction, but to find out how the safer systems we have today came into being. Yes Allegheny, I was thinking of the Popular Front For The Liberation of Judea. "He's not the driver, he's a very naughty boy"
  3. I appreciate the good work the unions have done in forcing safe working practices and improving pay for staff. I don't want a union bashing (or love in). As a railway modeller I'm keen to know what aspects that I am portraying is as a result of union activity. Another example is the removal of exGWR toad brake vans in the 1960s due to only one door, hindering escape of the guard in an accident.
  4. An article in the most recent MRJ about cab alterations on N7s as a result of rail unions pressure got me thinking about visible changes which were as a result of rail union actions. Apart from pay and working conditions which are not seen I can think of the obscuring of the glass panels on DMUs and emus in first generation units. There must be more examples. Anyone care to elucidate?
  5. Harold Bowtells Lancaster and Carlisle railway is a good source.
  6. Many thanks wasdave, I'll read the URL. Medium points as I don't like short/ tight points. Peco wagons all, and bought new.
  7. If the rest of the series is as well put together as the first then we are very lucky indeed. Not only seeing how a model is designed and quality checked before production, the full size restoration, the modeller, Callum researching and putting a layout together seems to cover all of mainstream modelling. That is how people come into the hobby.
  8. Hi, My bogie coaches have no trouble on facing Kato unitrack points (powered) but my few wagons all have trouble, derailing on every occasion. Not always the same wagon, not always the same position in the train, but I know that everyone I run a freight over a facing point something will detail. I've tried adding weights with no joy. I've measured back to backs with no joy. Ive changed the fishplates and level of track - all fine. Is it me or the track?
  9. I wonder if the faster than we would do it are due to post filming editing speeding up for time filling? Also the use in some cars of reverse imaging.
  10. Delighted to watch. Not only the production and r and d but the feature on actual modelling - Lyncombe vale by the janner lad, very good and an indication. The last year and a bit have shown the benefits of having a hobby and interest. I'm looking forward to the future episodes!
