  5. Building a Chivers 21T Mineral Wagon, very impressed by the crispness of the detail. Its obviously a very well thought out kit, nice and easy to build.

  6. Can anyone recommend a way to drill out the lifting eyes on a Hornby Sentinel? I assume a dremel type drill is the way to go?

I used a pin vice for mine. Much easier to control, the metal is fairly soft too

I use a pin vice for such jobs usually a 0.4mm drill bit as it's easier to keep control.

Thank you chaps, I obviously need to be more patient and try a smaller drill bit!

  7. Cannot sleep so watching 'The Ghost and the Darkness' on Iplayer. Brunel might have been good, but he never had to worry about Lions eating the navvies!

Some very difficult longitudinal folds on the 1/108 'cos there's not much material to grip. The rest of it's fine.

Depending on the type of chassis you're after there are better available elsewhere. Have a look at Rumney Models.

If you like filling serrated edges with solder this'll do for you. Other than that follow Justins advice.

  14. Has anyone ever tried making rolling stock, where the weight is scaled just like the size?

Interesting thought, I'm trying to visualise 1 tonne of coal in 4mm scale.

I thought the scaled down weight of locos wasn't too far from the actual weight of the models?

    1. davefrk

      davefrk

NO! Please no, I've got one I built years ago but I was planning a decent sprung chassis for it.

If you start with second hand models you can actually increase the value, or so I have been told.

  23. It occurs to me that railway modelling would be a lot harder without the RCH.

  24. Just used Paul B's wagon site to compare prototype pics of my unuilt kits, with Davefrk's excellent whitemetal buffers. It'll never catch on, this internet thingy.
