  1. Protocab fitted Minerva 57XX 7788 shunts a weathered Minerva Iron Mink van at Cwm Bach.

    Excellent, really excellent!

It is difficult to tell the exact colour on the laptop screen - it looks like a heavily weathered green, but the presence of topfeed suggest that you have started out with  black model...?

  2. Hi all,

I'm doing some due diligence before I purchase 32556, but I'm struggling to find any evidence, photographic or otherwise, of the duties that the Eastleigh based E4's would have undertaken in the mid to late 50's.

Would anyone be able to educate me if possible?

Just came across this on Ebay. "32556 (class E) at Eastleigh in store 18/11/53".

  3. We've temporarily hidden most of the pre-owned stock from the website as we're currently in preparations for a full stock take.

Everything will be back in it's normal place on Tuesday.

It's a huge job but it's actually quite fun.

    Cheers,

    Dave

I'm sure this must have been said before, but if you can hide the pre-owned stuff relatively easily, how about a nice big button on the front page that says 'show only new stock'. Then during the browsing session we wouldn't have to keep cancelling the little 'show preowned' tick at the head of each section?

  4. I've ordered one of these little beauties, as H Class powered push-pull sets, and well-worn C Class 0-6-0s on such freight as there was on the New Romney branch which ran near my home are early childhood memories. My mate Neil lived in one of the little level crossing houses on the line, so I got to see them close up too!    Now, in these memories, the coach portion was in BR red rather than green, but for the purposes of my half way built Southern based layout Tillingham, that's fine.  What I'm wondering is, does anyone with an interest in the Eastern section of the old BR Southern know if any auto trains ever ran with just the driving coach behind the loco, or were they all in pairs? The reason I ask is, before the announcement of the H Class plus coaches pack, which I duly ordered, I had already put the platform in place, and I now realise it's going to be a tad too short for the whole set...  Sadly there is no more room for expansion, so I'm wondering if I can get away with the loco and a single driving unit coach.

Rule number one always applies for me.  I know it is not quite what you want, but this little video shows an M7 and single coach between Petworth and Petersfield and is wonderfully atmospheric!

  5. I bought that book on 17th May, 1980.  I can be exact about the date because I spent the night reading it in the labour ward with my wife waiting for our oldest son to be born. My wife was reading the other book that I picked up at the same time - the rather appropriately titled 'Ripping Yarns'....

  6. Sorry to say I've had exactly the same experience recently. Ordered items that their website suggested were in stock. Waited a couple of weeks for them to arrive and nothing. Sent several emails that weren't responded too.

Oh dear - in exactly the same situation. Phone them next week...

Edited to note that I have just received a full refund and an apology. They seem to be improving and are now responding to emails in a very positive way.

  7. My understanding is that they were never normally used on the Watlington branch.

However there is a story that they might have been used at one time during WW11.

    Bernard

That would make sense as Watlington was classed as a yellow route, and before 57xx were reclassified from blue to yellow in 1950 and officially allowed to take over, the route had presumably to rely on a declining number of 2021s..?

  8. Certainly well within Ventnor's rights to do so.

Purely from a curiosity point of view I'd be interested to know what sort of percentage of sales Hattons have seen returned of the model. I think there was a post earlier which touched on it briefly, but i'd just like to see the simple percentage returned.

    Paul.

I  also wonder what they do with returns - write off as a loss, split for spares, repair...etc?

  9. Hi mate,

Point taken, but according to Hattons Dave its proved to be an extremely reliable Model along with the rest of the locomotives I have produced so far. In fact, currently, without taking into account the Hattons 14xx I'm receiving around 1.5% models back as faulty and turning 90% of those around. Yes seriously it's that low.

So comments here about the running abilities do vex me. But my client hasn't complained about returns to me........yet!

I can only advise that modellers who have purchased this Model just skim the last 3 or 4 pages for helpful advice if you do find yourself with a lumpy one, and see if it helps you before sending your Model back. This site is a wealth of great information and help and I thoroughly recommend a look if your at all concerned about any model from any manufacturer.

    Cheers

    Dave

Well I got one - it looks fantastic and runs extremely well - much better than I had expected it to. The only odd thing about the whole thing is that the cat is fascinated by the smell of the foam insert in the packaging....

  10. I havnt seen any comments about the gold " lining " between the boiler and the smokebox. Not visible on any photos of the  prototype that I've seen. Apart from this my 58xx is super -  except that when removing the cab to fit crew found that the whistles were superglued in! So, I'll turn a couple from brass.Look better anyway. All in all good value.

Yes a nice touch that on the model - I've been trying to think of a way of adding that to a J15...

  11. After reading through the whole of this thread I gathered that the Pecketts were used for shunting coal. How did H&P get the basic ingredients for their biscuits on site? Would it have been by road or rail?

Don't know the answer, but for anyone who hasn't come across it a good starting point for research is at: https://www.reading.ac.uk/special-collections/collections/sc-huntley-palmers.aspx

  12. Ridiculous review in Railway Modeller who would have liked lower gearing more in keeping with bucolic branch lines.

In the real world the 14XX did 60 mph and as much as 80 mph between Stonehouse and Gloucester on the Chalford Autos.

In fairness to RM perhaps they are thinking of the small home based BLT - something like the lovely little 'Upwold' 6 by 1 BLT from Roy Link in the October 1978 issue! No room to get up any sort of speed. I'm sure operation of the superb 'Nene Wharf' in the current issue must benefit from the low gearing of the Hornby J15...

  13. Hi all,

Apologies regarding the toolbox on 5819 - we've checked the other samples received and these are as they should be. I'll pop back down and redo the photos and also make sure this is relaid to the factory.

...in the picture I have of 5819 the toolbox is set a little further back, with the irons for spare lamps forward of the toolbox rather than to the rear. Small point, easily corrected if it bothers anyone...

  14. My model D3219 arrived today and runs very sweetly indeed under DC. Only one of the marker lights comes on going forward, the upper one. Is this correct -the instructions

suggest under DCC ALL the lights come on...

Mine does that too. I have no red rear lights - should they work under DC?

  15. ...I suppose I should point out that there is a small problem with D3219 in that (at least in 1963) the original had black coupling rods and red cranks and not the other way around as on the model (picture page 49 in Diesels on the Southern by Michael Welsh of a very clean condition in Brighton shed yard) but that certainly is not going to worry me, and at this size it will be so easy to correct if I ever do get precious about it! I think that that one picture is going to inspire my shunting plank....

  16. The blue one was my first venture into O four weeks ago, that's now resulted in most my 4mm stuff being sold, a new 7mm 40, a 37 & Peak on pre-order and my green 08 arrived today, it's addictive! :O

    Cheers

Yes, I could well see me selling lots....
