  1. Thank you Al. for bringing 'Paynestown' along, and supporting a very worthy cause.

    .

Many of us wil be touched by 'the long goodbye' and sadly watch friends and relatives deteriorate.

    .

All those who, like yourself, gave of their time,  those who came through the door, and those who cooked the bacon rolls played their part in raising funds to provide future support.

    .

So, on behalf of Paul and myself, may I again thank you for your support on Saturday.

    .

    Best wishes

    .

    Brian.

Could you do stacks of floorboards in 4 mm scale but with only the overhanging end detailed? Don't want to waste effort on the part that's hidden under the sheet...

I believe it was Martin Brent (but stand to be corrected) who wrote several articles for MRJ some years ago, on the subject of wagon loads e.g. planks, cable drums, sacks etc.

Although he was modelling in 7mm, the ideas could be easily reduced to 4mm, and then concealing parts of the load, I did that with some billet loads, using square section Evergreen strip, built around a void, so the only full billets were those on top, and the sides. The ends were just short sections.

  3. 1920s aerial views of Cardiff's "timber quarter" - aka East Tyndall Street, home of timber importers galore, Robinson, David; John Bland; Alexander's to name but a few

    .

The sidings at bottom left (in the first image) are Long Dyke Junc. and the GWR SWML is visible on the left.

    .

Also in view, GKIS 'New Dowlais' Works, rebranded on nationalisation to BSC East Moors.

  4. I have twin grandsons, just turned three and we are "developing alongside them" and whilst Autism effects most of their daily life - railways are the spark that brightens their day. Despite their communication difficulties, they readily identify Class 60s and Class 50s and due to their 'routine' must watch the passing of the Robeston - Theale/Westerleigh tanks before proceeding to nursery school.

    .

Last week they joined me operating my shunting plank for the first time, and were attentive and as good as gold - not trying to touch or prod the stock, but studying the shunter intently as it moved about the layout.

    .

We use Thomas the Tank characters and stories to assist their development, for counting, colours and the morals of the stories.

The achievements of all children are a milestone, but in the case of Rhys & Daniel, I'm the proudest 'bampy' one can imagine.

Those detail parts originated with Iain Riceover twenty years ago, and they still are the best available.

    .

They featured in an old MRJ article about detailing and finescaling the 14XX, which included the construction of a P4 chassis.

A very good article, over two issues IIRC by Messrs Rice and Neep.

Will it be a replica of a Llantrisant - Penygraig shuttle ?

Or closer to the metropolis, the Cathays 14XX that plied up to North Rd and Maindy halts ?

    .

Good work, as Western as you can get, keep it up.

    .

I'm told you can get half-scale flying replicas starting at £150k !

    .

Many moons ago when I was living at home, I was outside with my dad one afternoon when for no apparent reason he exclaimed 'Merlins' !!

    .

I asked what he meant, and he just stood there.

    .

A few seconds later, flying north east over cardiff came the battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Hurri, Lanc & Spit.

    .

The 'old man' appeared to grow an inch or two, then turned and said "once heard, never forgotten"

  7. Ahh DEMU - I had an 'approach' to attend with Marc but as my daughter was delivered of twin boys on Wednesday, and they are in the Special care Baby Unit at PoWH Bridgend for monitoring their blood-sugar levels, I had to decline..

    .

Enjoy DEMU, there will be an exam on it when I see you next week, and the passmark is high !.
