  1. As with other freight stock BR livery dictated unfitted brake vans were painted grey, fitted were painted bauxite. . Obviously there will be the odd exception to the rule (as in most lerge organisations). . Brian R
  2. In fact Steve, it was at the previous year's Cardiff Show, 2009 IIRC. Paul has tarted it up a bit since that show, and if there's a chance would show it again - he had a few offers/enquiries, but nothing really concrete. Perhaps it could make a return at this years show, his current layout Waungron Park is not quite finished, and his circular steelworks was shown at the last cardiff Show. The houses/flats were drawn up using his CAD system, he does building drawings, extensions, planning applications as part of his day job, and then printed them out using a large printer. That worked fine as any deficiencies were hidden by the scaffolding. Decent photos of the signal box have always proved elusive, unless someone can point us in the right direction ?. Brian R

The current "Great Western Journal" continues it's multi-part feature of Paddington, and contains R.A.F. aerial views from 1948/49 of (i) Paddington (ii) Paddington Goods, and (iii) Royal Oak / Ranelagh Bridge Yard. All three photo captions contain the negative references should you wish to obtain copies. 'Kestrel' carried a consignment note which read:- "Contract No.50/16031 Transport No.466049 Item No. Equipment No. Gross Weight 87 tonnes Net Weight 86.5 tonnes Size 20.27 x 2.8 x 3.78 metres, 3.975 metres on stands" 'Kestrel' was subsequently moved to the Queen Alexandra Dock by 3258 & 3260 for shipping to the USSR on Friday 11th.   10. Quite an accurate portrayal of the prototype then ! . Does it scream when struggling with 50+ SLU's on the back, like the one I used to watch each morning in 1969 on the Long Dyke, Penarth Curve and Radyr trip. . . . . . or even burst into flames . . . . . now that would be a task for a DCC expert. .   12. "Gulf Oil" - Cardiff Docks, who initially purchased D9530 from BR in 1969 in order to shunt this terminal. It's not known whether or not the loco was ever used there, as it appears to have gone straight to Waterston refinery in west Wales, and was later sold to the NCB. . There were a couple of terminals located on the branch from Grangetown (Cardiff) alongside Ferry Road to the Ely Tidal Harbour. By the mid-70s a Radyr based Cl.08 would work to Penarth Curve North and three paths were available through the day onto the Ferry Road branch, where one terminal was shunted by a Planet loco owned by South Wales Warehouses. Rationalisation saw the branch truncated, and the terminal siding moved closer to Grangetown station - final closure came around 1983. . Finally, one that 'bucked the trend' - the 'Minimet' terminal on Cardiff's foreshore, and alongside the Queen Alexandra Dock entrance lock lost its rail business several years ago, until a DB(S) operated Lindsey OR train started up again at the back end of 2010, with the Cl.66 working straight to the terminal, negating the need for a Tidal pilot - as shwon in this shot of 08689 shunting the terminal on 9th June, 2005, just before rail traffic ceased. .   14. I don't know how some of these plans would scan as pdf documents. Reading thro' the list I have spotted a few omissions e.g a Hunslet 'flameproof' 0-4-0D for the NCB which I know I have from a 1950s MRN or MRC, but can't put my finger on it ! Brian R

In the days when the preserved 8750 pannier, 9642, was kept at Maesteg, it ran with a 'Toad' converted to a sort of observation coach set-up, could this have been the vehicle, or another 'toad' again ?. On the subject of 'Toads' - ADW35377 was purchased by Allied Steel & Wire (ASW) at Tremorfa and fitted with lighting, a compressor, jacks, beams and packing - renumbered RR1 and used for re-railing within the works. Shame it wasn't available this week when GBRf operated 08925 hit the dirt ! ASW also bought two BR vans B954532 & B954734 for use in tours around the company's rail network. Unfortunately these never came about, B954532 was gutted by fire, and both were scrapped after ASW went to the wall in 2002.Brian R
  19. Ian, The NCB did operate brake vans on some of it's systems, most notably the Wemyss system in Scotland, where they had a couple of ex Midland Railway brakes amongst others. . They also used brake vans on the Littleton Colliery branch in Staffs. . I've no doubt there were others . Brian

  21. 1..... Augher Valley, David Lloyd . 2..... Marthwaite, and it's "Long Drag" successors, David Jenkinson . 3..... Borchester, Frank Dyer . There may be layouts around today that have achieved greater realism, better running and superior operation, BUT the question was 'what inspired you'. . As for continued inspiration, the series of articles produced by the "LMS Society" which appeared in the Railway Modeller form circa 1964 take some beating. Not only was there "LMS wagons" but numerous articles on LMS coaching stock, and some classes of loco. Combine these, with the LNWR inspired works of J.K. "Jack" Nelson and there are some great articles, the likes of which you don't see today. Brian R
