  1. Weathering is very good. I had a maroon western done to a photo I provided. Check Phil Bullocks postings and you will see examples. Mike
  2. A couple of weeks ago I left a message on his answerphone, he replied within 2 days when I placed my order. I think patience is needed and I believe he is a one man band. Its worth the wait, the products are good. Mike
  3. One more check would be the 4 wire plug into the tender socket. Check the wires are not touching on the plug, creating an internal short. Mike
  4. I have just picked up on this topic and don't know how far you have progressed in your search for a Hall DCC sound decoder with speaker. There are good suggestions from other members here and all from good retailers. You could also try Coastal DCC who can supply what you want in regards to a Hall sound file. And Kevin the owner is most obliging and I am sure would solder the speaker to the decoder. The horny Hall is supplied with an 8 pin socket in the tender and easy to install. I fitted a Zimo MX649R into my Hornby Hall. See attached. HTH Mike
  5. Obtained the buffers from Lanarkshire Models and Supplies. www.lanarkshiremodels.com The website lists all buffers. I used 16" heads. Mike
  6. I do not have the Mainline Mogul but I do have a Bachmann split chassis model. The loco has had the chimney and valve cover replaced with brass fittings. I can't recall where I got them from but they look the part. A fall plate and wire handrails are fitted and Comet cylinder covers fitted. Tender wise the Bachmann chassis is replaced with a Mainly Trains unit and scale wheels fitted and the real coal is in the tender. Sound is fitted with the speaker in the tender and decoder in the loco and importantly it is a good runner. I also have the sound fitted Dapol mogul, great model that needs weathering. Mike
  7. The Class 43 Warship should be up there with the best. Superb looker and runner and fitting sound is a doddle. No not in the roof.
  8. Many moons ago I fitted sound and lights to the Bachmann 8 pin 25. A couple of photos might help. The picture quality is not good (just rushed off) but they may give you some ideas for your project. 1st picture shows the chassis modified to accept a 23mm diameter or 25mm square speaker. 2nd picture shows the square speaker in place. 3rd picture shows a speaker located in the tank, this is how I fitted the speaker. Back in the day we only had the 23mm speakers.
  9. Airfix cattle wagon. Put proper wheels and buffers on it. I like this model so will build another.
  10. Versatile kits, I still have one Airfix ES kit left from my very early purchases. I do agree about painting them and getting a mortar flow. I dismantled two sheds and used the walls and window frames on my dairy. The canopy is also Airfix, the station canopy,re-sheeted with Wills corrugation sheets,
  11. My mogul suffers from the same derailing problem with a bias to the right. Inspection of the bogey LH wheel (looking forward) showed the wheel and tyre as oval. A micrometer checked confirmed this. It also suffers from a slack loco to tender connection.
  12. My browser deletes all cookies when I switch off.
  13. Got my spelling wrong, its Django Reinhardt and the violinist is probably Stephane Grappelli. Brings back some memories of my youth. Now I must dig out my old LP's. Mike
  14. My Fairburn install hard wired the decoder. The 8 pin socket was removed and the speaker located on the now available platform. The two support columns need removing. The decoder was pushed into the smoke box. An easy install if you don't mind removing the 8 pin socket.
  15. Both Digitrains and Youchoos supply the Zimo decoders for the 4MT, then there is SWD and Howes in addition to Charlie supplying Loksound. Of course there are more retailers too many to list.
  16. Thanks Andrew, I learn something every day. But I should have read the book. Mike
  17. CV's are not related to speed steps, RFS explains the situation. I don't agree the setting of speed steps is achieved through CV29, this CV controls the motor functions i.e. forward or reverse, operation on DC systems etc. Decoder manuals explain the utilization of CV29. Some time ago I compiled a chart of speed steps for both ESU and Zimo sound files. You may find it useful. Feel free to amend it as required, it is not perfect and you will need Excel to read it. Speeds-Threshold Settings.xlsx Mike
  18. Received my 4160 from Derails (good service) run it around the layout across 3 way and double slip points, both directions for at least one hour and all is well. The running quality is very good and the finish is also very good. It looks the part as I remember them. One slight problem, dropping couplings, the push up bar sometimes catches on the vee when crossing points causing derailments, remove them and all is well, as I do anyway. Good model and at current prices good value. Just need to install sound to complete. Mike
  19. I agree with Phil, the Howes Hymek sound is hard to better and it is essential to fit a good speaker, by good I mean properly enclosed and with no interference to the diaphragm. Mike
  20. Does this help, decoder and speaker in the loco. Hornby tender chassis added for additional pickups. The photos are not very clear.
  21. Replace the speaker with an 8 ohm sugar cube 15X11X9 speaker. You will need to remove the 8 pin socket and file down the two supports and hard wire the decoder. The 8 pin socket support block is held in place by one screw. Remove this for easy modification. All enables you to fit the decoder in the boiler and the speaker on the prepared platform. The sound emits from the loco and not the tender. Much more realistic, I have modified all my older Hornby locos in this way. H.T.H. Mike
