1. Thanks Pete Hope you enjoyed the read and it wasn't too boring! It's interesting if it hadn't been for the encouragement of a few guys on here, I do wonder if I'd have persevered! Being able to share your hobby really does make a difference. Thanks for the recommendation. I have looked at Connoisseur Models in the past, dreamed and moved on lol! Am coming round to that line of thinking. Need to find out the best type, grade and temperature solder to use and also need a better iron before I tackle those however! Rich
2. Hi Simon, Ah, the penny has now dropped I think! I still can't get the various parts to run in the same direction as in the Parkside diagram, but it looks a lot better now! Thanks for the link, that helped. Cheers Paul. I used to think that, but I'm enjoying it! Slow and steady! Thanks Brian Lots of things going on, that's true! Lot of planning taking place for the 'BIG' project as well, which Marsh Lane is the run up to. Plan is to spend this afternoon doing some more on the big crossover, then only one more point to do, and I can start track laying! It gets simpler as its all straight or curved track on the depot from then! As for brass wagon kits ... Hmmm ... I always used to say that they were beyond me and too complicated, but I'm slowly coming round to the idea that I may have a bash at one. Could be the prelude to the 7mm brass tram kit I've just ordered that is part of the 'BIG' project! Oops Rich
3. Hi Simon, Erm ... thanks for the explanation ... I think my head hurts! I can understand what your saying and can now see how the different parts work, but cannot in my mind put it into play with whats in the kit! Somehow the penny isn't dropping with me. Rich Gainsborough Model Railway I never got around to posting the video earlier in the week - so if anyone would like a look. I cannot find a way of making the player bigger, so you can always watch it on the Vimeo website by clicking here. Rich
4. Hi CME, Sorry to dredge an old post up - but I'm looking at the different coupling options but despite whats on the Winterleys website, cannot work out for the life of me how these couple and uncouple - and looking at the YouTube video on their site, when you reverse slightly to drop on one vehicle (say fourth from the engine) why don't the others uncouple too? Given the front and back 'parts' to the coupling, I'm not convinced these would work for me as everything has to be handed it seems ... can you offer any insights? Rich
5. Evening guys, Well I've discovered having a birthday does give you some benefits, I've had a half day off work!! Yay! Just a shame its my 38th and not 28th So with that, spent an hour or so adding the brake shoes and becoming totally confused at the brake rigging on this Parkside 'Toad E' kit. A couple of pictures below - anyone whose tackled these before - can you tell me if I'm right or not? The instructions and diagrams seem to contract each other, and it doesn't look right to me! #confused! Rich EDIT: Ah! Its just dawned on me - should the brake rodding go between the base and the axle, rather than the axle and the trackbed as I've got it at the moment?
6. A week? My god, must have been a slow few days for Andy P! . The speed of Andy's layout building, detailing and running is amazing ... as you say, 10-15 years for the rest of us - although looking at my 'Big' project, probably 20 years! Rich
7. Go on you know you want do KGX really!!! Hoping to get back to Templot tomorrow - sorry for the delay mate. Rich
8. Oops, I have a habit at the moment of getting people's names wrong sorry!!! Rich Edited: To sign post!
9. Really pleased you posted this, as I'm on the look out for vehicles! Shall be scouring eBay now for these!!! Layout looks superb - well done, following with interest. Rich
10. Hi Paul, A couple of images attached below. I went to Gainsborough Model Railway as you may have seen from my thread - they have an adapted model of the steam shed alongside Kings Cross. Now I know this is steam, and your looking at the diesel layout, but work on 20" per loco and you'll get an idea of length and what it looks like. I took these specially as I thought it might help you visualise! All O gauge are manually wired DCC, yes your right - but the hardest thing is getting the body off and working out how to get the speakers in! Trust me, once you've dealt with that, then established where all of the wires go (lights, motor, pick ups etc) and noted them down. Remove the current PCB, add the DCC decoder, connect to the appropriate terminals (detailed on the instructions), replace body and run. It really isn't difficult. Rich
11. Hi Jollysmart & Deano, It certainly is large! The building its in is the old Victorian School House in Gainsborough, although I believe the small room on the side that houses Retford (and the loo!) was a Society addition. Given the age of some of the models now, a few really could do with touching up and repainting, but I guess thats all part of the rolling plan. I'll try and get the video up later today or tomorrow, work depending! Rich
12. Nice move David, Can't beat a few 16t minerals around the joint .... I've succumbed btw ... I've joined the Finescale Brass reservation Britannia list! Rich
13. Hi Andy, It really is - wait until you see the video! If you do get up this way, let me know and I'll come over and meet you. Rich
14. LNER A2 Pacific No. 60533 Happy Knight awaits its next duty on Doncaster Shed, alongside an Class 04 2-8-0. Submitted purely as a 'realistic' photograph, and unfortunately not my models or layout! The image was taken during an open afternoon at the Gainsborough Model Railway on 4th December 2016. The layout portrays the ECML between London and Leeds and provides some superb opportunities for taking 'realistic' images. More on my Flickr page or my rmWeb thread if anyone wants a look - see signature. Rich
15. Evening all, Spent a very enjoyable couple of hours at the Gainsborough Model Railway this afternoon. If you've not heard of it, or seen it, its a large O Gauge layout, the origins of which date back to 1946, and recreates the ECML primarily during the 1930s-1960s between Kings Cross and Leeds. 10 Signallers, 180 locos and authentic bell codes between signal boxes. Pure bliss! If you've always thought of going, go see it! I've posted a few pics below to give a flavour, but put a load more on my new 7mm dedicated Flickr site (see https://www.flickr.com/photos/marshlane/albums/72157673479573653) for the full collection, or the link in my signature for the home page! My father was with me, who has taken a load of video, so once I've had time to edit it down, I'll post that on here too. Well worth a look - their next open day is 30th December, then Easter next year. Unfortunately, I don't think their own website does the layout justice, but if you like O gauge, like authentic operation and have some time to spare, its well worth a visit! Rich
16. Yes, think I prefer the blue one with Jinty's speaker in it. Both very nice! Rich
17. I think you could work within the parameters you'd said originally. And as for your comments about DMUs and the station in the future well, like I said earlier, there's always the suburban terminus platforms - then you can run the DMUs, and maybe the odd Baby Deltic on suburban stock I'll finish off playing, and post it so you can see it! Rich
18. Well I said yesterday that I would post a picture of the tea-light ... and having taken the one below, decided it didn't really show the effect (perhaps that was predictable!) so theres a little uninteresting video clip attached for anyone who is interested too! Hoping to make some more progress with the guards van tomorrow, and possibly with the point as well! It will be nice when the layout is underway and the video's can get more interesting! Rich
19. No problem mate. Its nice that there is a group all interested in each other's layouts, I easily get confused tho! Rich
20. Your making me VERY envious now Andy! Oh for the space of a workshop like that! Very nice ... does it stay that tidy for long? Like the plans for the layout, quite spacious and not cluttered. Rich
21. Nice plan! I'll stop working on KGX then!! you *may* just about get that one a 2' wide board, but if you want some space at the front, around the shed, and at the back of the layout, id say that is a 3' wide baseboard - 2'6" minimum. Nice plan tho. Rich
22. Thanks for the reply Dave - I'd leave the Barn conversion business to others ... can you image the courier cost! ... and stick to what works Like ICI hoppers in O Gauge! Rich
23. Well that's just not good enough! What are you playing at? Relaxing until next year? Pah! Andy P could have completed two layouts in that time!!!! Hehe! Thanks for talking the time to find the layout link, that's appreciated. I'll take a look and have a read. Your latest signals from the master himself, Jon F, look superb btw! Rich
24. Hi Giles, Just spent an enjoyable hour reading through the topic and watching the videos. Totally superb - 10 out of 10 to you for what you have achieved. Wonderful. I'm looking at something similar, although not R/C for my O gauge layout ... Any chance you could tell me where the wheel bearings come from. I've hunted around the bay of E but can't immediately see anything. Cheers Rich
