So, them concentrating on catching up with the many still outstanding items isn't getting their act together? Interesting theory.

it is a interesting theory, my rationale is that they tend to concentrate on steam or modern image, but what about pre tops blue etc? dont we get a look in? Tbh I actually miss lima

My best wishes and thanks to the staff and management of Hattons for a lifetime (for me) of service.

I too was shocked as I came to this news today, it one of those institutions you feel would somehow always be there.

I still have a memory of being taken there by my dad, probably in the mid or late 1960’s as he mopped up a little of the original Hornby Dublo stock they were clearing. Later in life I made my own visits to both of the Smithdown Road shops, plus a couple of visits to the Widnes warehouse. As a motorcyclist I’m often looking for a destination for a ride out and when there was a special purchase in mind it was an enjoyable day out to have a run up the A41 from the West Midlands knowing that there will be something shiny and new in the rucksack for the ride home.

The mail order service was also excellent, most of the big retailers handle this well but the “trunk” service was particularly innovative for getting those smaller bits and pieces at a sensible shipping cost.

The only reason they saw so little of my money in the last few years is that the major manufacturers aren’t producing anything I want to buy.

hattons have been brilliant, and im the same the major manufacturers dont cater for pre tops blue much

    Hi Chris,

Yes indeed. It will live again but for the avoidance of any doubt and to halt any further speculation,  I'll be looking at this later in the year, making the necessary contact and announcements when as you so rightly say, there is something to announce........ as per earlier post.....

Rest assured, it will be worth the wait and up to the required standard.

    Rob

    thanks rob :)

  4. happy new year all :)

I've noticed on the chris dyer fairs site that the 2 shows locally in brecon and llanelli are under new management, is there any word about reinstating the cardiff train/toy fairs please? as it's a bit of a trek to llanelli and brecon

Unfortunately due to a very foolish comment by myself on here which I now wholeheartedly regret, 2 years ago I was no longer made welcome at lord and butler so unable to get second hand stuff as much as I used to

    Many thanks

Admin please move if in wrong area.

Most sailing clubs have the rule written into their rule book that any boat with unpaid site rents, will be sold if the owner cannot be contacted, or has been contacted and doesn't pay up.

What my own club does is move the boat on rent being unpaid, across to a least favorable mooring / parking area.  Then if there is no outcome from contact attempts , after a specified period of grace, which quite long , iirc a year, sell off the boat.

If there is a difference between owings and value to the former owner, then that will be returned to the former owner if they ever turn up.

It's also in the club rules that the club can move any boat for any realistic reason. Mostly that's site maintenance.

That is correct, and its under RYA rules regarding abandoned boats

I think that he is just trying to attract attention to his sales pages, we have all looked now haven't we? But he does seem to have a thing about writing implements. There are several other sets of pens and pencils with similar prices, but other types of item seem much nearer to reality pricewise.

I dont think it is that mate, I think he is trying to take the mickey,

This guy is taking the mickey, £1k for a pack of 2b pencils! which normally is about 5-6 quid, and the same for a pack of 2 oxford erasers, he's been reported as that is taking the

Just an observation - unless you purchased ESU (Extended Security Updates) from Microsoft, Windows 7 has only had sporadic patches for REALLY nasty things since January 2020. Using a Windows 7 PC connected to the internet is taking quite a risk unfortunately.

i purchased esu so no drama on that,

all three systems 2 laptops and 1 main system run fine, as I use 0patch to keep them patched.

I wish! The nearest big stockist of railway material that would be of use to me ie: 00 gauge stuff, is a 160km (100 miles - or 2 hours) journey each way! Unfortunately, not only is it far, far away in another universe, they haven't anything outside of Peco and Heljan products and compared to UK prices quite a bit more expensive.

I don't have much option but to let my fingers do the walking, though I tend to do a lot by 'phone to the UK to Lord and Butler in my case. I do have to take a chance though that I don't take a hit VAT-wise - I think I'm winning at the moment.

Just to pick up what @tomparryharry said at the beginning regarding Lord and Butler, they did indeed start in one very small unit in what used to be the old sewage pumping station in Cardiff, selling mainly S/hand and then moved onto selling new items, outgrew the unit and expanded into an adjoining unit. It was so crowded with stock it was wonderful! They outgrew that too and had to move across the road (car park actually) into a larger unit.

I went there this February and it was packed to the gunnels again! BUT, it has taken them over 20 years to get there and it's only been achieved by customer care and satisfaction and knowing what the customer is likely to want even if it's only a tin of paint or a yard of track - not only did I get a cup of tea there, but my lunch as well. (The lunch was an exception as he is my brother after all! :)) ) Chats come free!

    Shameless plug over,

    Cheers,

    Philip

They have come a long way, I remember the old shop in the pumping station, feel old now, I'm glad to hear they are expanding, which is what cardiff needs

If you need a 90 or 100 wagon mineral train, Stoke Gifford/Stafford/Toton/Peterborough-Acton/Willesden/Cricklewood/Ferme Park. you are looking at not far off £1800 or more with brake van and DCC sound-fitted loco (two of them for the Midland).  Not so bad for a BLT.

Peco Parkside and Dapol Kitmaster replicate most of Bachmann's range between them, and Dapol do unpainted vans and wagons, which will bring the spending down a bit, but if you're using setrack they may not run well.  This is a rich man's hobby, my norse marauding friend!

    yikes

luckily my diesels are lima/Hornby/silverfox on lima chassis, I got the money but I refuse to spend that much and it will never be 100 wagon train mate

Same goes for washing machines etc.

Less and less is becoming economically repairable - cheaper to buy a new one.

And it also reduces the need to keep spares for the myriad variants of models over the years.

    and it increases landfill etc,

You can buy replacement motors for those sealed units.

Places like Lendons sell railroad bogies complete very cheap too anyway.

lendons are just up the road from me and are brilliant, BTW, if you are buying spares off them, drop them a email first pls as they can get it ready if you are picking it up

Do you have a go at car manufacturers for the same thing?

It's the way tech is going - easier to build the unit as a complete unit rather than lots of smaller bits.

Then just replace the whole thing.

    no

Why?  Every manufacturer uses sealed motors now as far as I know

because its a waste, years ago you had a motor that you could service, now its a throwaway job and buy another motor, not exactly sustainable is it

I've recently picked up the ex Lima Railroad 37s that Hornby have released, ("Comet" and "The Northern Lights"), and they both have a newer sealed type motor. Performance is very good indeed and far exceeded my expectations; once properly run in they handled the loads a Lima one could and would probably manage more. We had ours running with a rake of 10 Lima Mk1s (Summer Saturday seaside special) and 22 Lima PTAs (purely as a test) and there were no signs of struggling or slipping or even overheating. The motors themselves are very quiet too and much quieter than my new Bachmann 158s!

That also goes for the ex Lima Railroad 125s as well.

I don't know if these motors will be different to the ex Lima 47, but I would assume not?

As a side note, we found that after a few hours use there were faint squeaking sounds coming from the loco's. The kind of noise old Hornby motors make when not lubricated or when they've dried out. A quick drop of lubricant in the correct places as per the Hornby instructions solved this issue instantly.

Of course all these ex Lima releases are not perfect by any means compared with the "high end" stuff however they're very robust and solid (there's nothing to fall off which is delightfully simple and refreshing) and a wonderful starting point for detailing, weathering and painting etc. And this is what we like to do. It's incredible the difference it can make. I'd also argue that the colours used are actually more accurate than a lot of Hornby's "premium" releases...

I look forward to adding the next releases to the collection. Well done Hornby, credit where it's due. 👍

I wont be buying Hornby then,
