  1. This was new last year, and to the credit of the exhibitors, worked well.

I think it's a good idea - we have lots of occasional van drivers in a confined space with plenty of people wandering around. Making those people obvious can't be a bad. Arguably, it's probably less important for "proper" shows where there will be professional stand builders and people who drive vans all the time, and a lot less people wandering around.

It won't stop people doing stupid things such as diving through spaces between a moving vehicle and a stand, but we might just spot them.

Fully concur Phil. Even one accident avoided, and every minor injury prevented, is a success. The rules are common sense, and from putting up theatre sets regularly I can validate that safety boots might be prudent IF your layout has any heavy bits. A corner dropped on an unprotected toe is beeping painful! I now take and wear toe cap boots. Even something as basic as riggers gloves can save cuts and blisters. I can never understand why people whinge so much at H&S ideas when all that is being suggested is taking five minutes to weigh up the situation and apply the common sense you should be doing anyway,

  2. We are attending this year for the first time with the SLS stand. Should have around 4000 photo prints available for sale. Stand No 126.

First time for me at the show either as a visitor or trader; looking forward to it.

Possibly a daft question - what twitter # are people using to plug it, doesn't seem much twitter activity and no clue on the Warners web page. (And yes we do need to start something about #YMRS on twitter too.

  3. Thanks  Layout page listing now updated.

Further to the above the website has also been updated this evening with the latest info received from Mal.  I've added details of an additional trader and also made some changes and additions on the Societies & Demonstrators page.

  4. It is of course up to individuals whether to catch the bus or travel there by other means but bear in mind the 197 is an event day service run on a commercial basis, if not enough people use it, the taxi may well be the only option next year and instead of extolling the virtues of arguably the best show in the country, we'll be filling this post with laments about the lack of a bus service!

As a tall bloke who can't ride cross country trains these days anyway (because the seats are too close together to sit in if you have long legs) the bus debate has been for me, and I guess other tall people too, a distracting and pointless academic debate. Only my personal opinion, not an official comment on behalf of the show, but perhaps there has been too much debate about the ruddy buses already!

To get back to the show.

We have a fantastic line up of layouts, traders, societies and demonstrators in one of the UK's prime tourist locations. Add to that the 3-day bus link reinstated this year, the extensive free parking, easy access to the City by road and fantastic catering what more do you need. Book a ticket, roll up and enjoy the day.

  5. I'm sure many will be pleased to hear that news, note that concessionary passes aren't accepted on it though.

Valid point RANGERS re passes on the 197 but as a reminder there are also local service bus options (Saturday only) on which use of the concessionary passes should be available. Alternatively If you arrive at the station there is also the option for taxis - groups could taxi share one of the many York taxis serving the station rank . The latter will get you closer to the show entrance which would be a bonus if the weather is inclement.

I am just commencing the off-site editing of the show website with the bus news (as posted above) and also an update to the Societies and Demonstrator page with the details of invites as they currently stand. Not yet sure when that will be finished/uploaded but should be later today.

  6. Traders are now on the site.  There will no doubt be further updates between now and Easter, so worth visiting at regular intervals. Advance tickets are available by using PayPal or the form from the website. Try to put the tickets in the post the day following the receipt of the order, sometimes it takes and extra day.

Traders page given minor update tonight. One new trader added (Revolution Trains) and most of the previously missing links to the traders websites now added.

  7. Latest updates to the YMRS website now live. Traders, Layouts and Hints & Tips pages updated today.  Traders - I note several of you have not supplied me with a website, ebay or Facebook page link, any that I receive will be added but I haven't time to go looking!

Still to come the Society & Demonstrator lists for 2017 as they remain Work in Progress. As previously mentioned the Travel page will also be reviewed and link checked closer to the Show date for any changes since it was last revised and updated in October.

  8. Were missed off the list of traders

As web page states the list is still last year's until I update it with the content received this week as mentioned above. If we missed you last time apologies.

Layouts & Traders will be the current updates. Societies and Demonstrators still TBC/work in progress.

  9. Lateral thinking - Would it help if for visitors making the return run to the station we had a meeting point for potential ad-hoc taxi groups? Meet, ring a taxi, ride back as group of a four or five splitting fare costs between you? If a few say yes I will raise it at the next Committee meeting so we agree up front where to set it up with a sign/list of the local taxi company numbers.

  10. Then why not try Monday?

Sadly re the bus as Monday is a Bank Hol it may end up on all standard buses as a Sunday service (Therefore blank) day. That is one of the things that will be in the pre-show update.

  11. This marks a change in policy from the days of Mike Cook. It is obvious from his memoirs that, at that time, the York show DID arrange the special buses.

The Saturday is generally too busy for me. If there isn't a special bus on the Sunday I won't be going. There ARE other shows...

Suggest getting a group together and arrange a joint taxi.

  12. If things go ok will be there again. Great show, great venue with friendly atmosphere.Best show food/ drink IMHO.No need for packed lunch. You can actually sit and eat well in comfortable, congenial surroundings.Dedicated return bus from the station and of course it's York a national jewel. What more do you need for a special day out or stay over.?

Comment on the above re the bus link to avoid any possible disappointment. The days the dedicated bus link will be running is one of the questions still WIP. This link, Service 197, is provided as a commercial operation when there are Racecourse events and it is not organised by YMRS. Until last year it ran for the three days, however, last year the operator decided it was profitable to only run Sat Only (See earlier debate &/or 2016 Show thread). When I last checked and updated the show travel page in October 2016 two other local bus options remain available on Sat Only so there should be a Saturday link irrespective of what happens this year regarding Service 197. However the frequency of service is low on these and obviously seating will be limited. First Bus route 11 runs on Saturdays BUT the nearest stop is on Bishopthorpe Rd, so still leaves quite a walk if you use that from the Railway Station.

Our How to get to the Show page will be fully rechecked a week or so prior to the show dates to ensure we are showing the latest transport/travel issues for 2017 and as part of that all the current links to the local bus timetables will be rechecked/verified.

  13. Lots going on behind the scenes. Website, and here, will be updated when the info' is confirmed and ready to report in public. If you follow our Facebook Page you will see we do post from time to time so are still active. Don't know about our other exhibitors but I know I am looking forward to it expectantly (SLS Stand and Admin/Help Desk team)

Follow up  - We did of course add a completely new page to the website only a few days ago - links to pages with helpful tips for modellers. Any suggestions for more links to add to that page welcomed. For beginners and advanced.

  14. Just having a look at exhibitions coming up and note nothing posted for a while about the Easter York Model Railway Show.

Perhaps some one connected with the exhibition can give us all a update.

I trust it's all on plan as we are exhibiting the club layout "Whiteacres" and my own layout "Alsone Quay"

  15. Unless a bus service from the station to the Racecourse is provided, I won't be going (the 11 doesn't count whether or not it is running).

Agreed regarding the 11 for 2017.  Regrettably after checking the latest timetable I found that the information we had on the route was obsolete and the composite York bus map is misleading. Thanks for the prompt to recheck First's website and I apologise for the YMRS website info' being inaccurate for a while.

Regarding buses we know the service bus options have a low frequency but there do remain service bus links to/from the racecourse (Saturday only) on routes 21 & 26 and our travel page has links to the operators website and/or timetable. Bus links section

I can't update regarding the 197 events link bus situation at this stage except to say options are being considered.

  16. Quick update on things relating to York Show for next year.

On the positive side the Advance Ticket Box Office is now open for postal or on-line orders (PayPal) and all prices and times have been held as per 2016. Links from our Facebook page or on our website at http://www.yorkshow.org.uk/advance.htm

Less welcome news is that the anticipated subsidy cut to the service 11 bus for Sundays has been confirmed by York City Council. Not yet aware of the Bank Monday timetable but last year it ran to the Sunday pattern therefore it is almost certain there will not be a number 11 on Monday either.

  17. I posted the comment not in anticipation the YCC decision will be to support the buses but as an update on what is going on.

As a retired local government manager I know one of the biggest problems for buses is the passes (and I do use mine) because central government fails to 100% reimburse as they also fail to do for many other items. York is not alone, was planning to use a service bus from the suburbs into central Kidderminster a few weeks ago as a park and ride option, last bus back just after 5 so a non-starter.

As PeterL has posted, the committee will look at it and see what the options are for next year, but at least we are forewarned in plenty of time that the service bus option may not be there. It is easy to forget how lucky I am where I live with evening buses running half-hourly until at least midnight 7 days a week.

  18. Reason for the early post is to give the latest news on the situation re the consultation process for the No 11 bus route and the 2017 Show. (Sun & Mon)

My personal response to YCC (their's to me below)

Having read the summary of responses I am dismayed to see that the point raised regarding visitors attending non-horse related events at the major venue of the Racecourse is omitted.

Smacks of decision made with no intention of amendment irrespective of what bus users might comment!

    Subject: Consultation- supported bus services

    Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for responding to our consultation on changes to council-supported bus services. Responses to the consultation have been used to inform a report by the council’s Director for City and Environmental services.

The report has been called in for scrutiny by the council’s Economic Development and Transport Policy Scrutiny Committee. As a result, the Executive Member Decision Session, previously scheduled for Thursday 19th May, will now take place on Thursday 2nd June.

Further information on these meetings, including the report, can be found on the City of York Council website:

  19. The SLS are pleased to report that our historic LNWR locomotive Orion, the only surviving operational Crewe built Webb Compound, will be in steam this weekend at Locomotion, Shildon.

    Steaming dates for 2013

3/4 Aug Model Mania event - Locomotion, Shildon
21/22 Sep Steam Gala - Locomotion, Shildon

    Latest information on the engine.

After the boiler certificate expired in 2011 the engine was displayed on the Society’s stand at the Warley MRC exhibition at the NEC and then (just like a standard gauge engine) was given a thorough 10 year overhaul.  Orion returned to steam during 2012 better than ever as operational experience gained with valve timings etc., was applied.  Orion is normally displayed at Locomotion, Shildon, and steamed during gala events.

An e-book (Free) covering the history of the locomotive is available on our website.
