  1. From the York Show - A lost property update: late on this afternoon we had a pack of loco building fitments handed in. Despite announcing it they were unclaimed at the end of the day. If you think they may be yours PM me a description and we can arrange to post them on.

Apologies for the cross post but given the specialist nature of the items the purchaser may well be a reader of this thread.

My best mate Dave booked tickets for the show and we duly arrived yesterday ready to be inspired by the layouts and modelling on display and - maybe - pick up a few items.

It was quite busy when we arrived, which meant we skipped anything overly crowded and returned to them later. The larger layouts were impressive - South Pelaw as has previously been mentioned was stunning, but we both felt it would have benefitted from not having to run its curved end boards behind another exhibitor. Having said that, we have never had to plan an exhibition and fit layouts etc into a fixed space, so hats off to @john new and team.

What we both found, though, was although we found the larger layouts inspirational, it was the micro layouts which we spent longer at. Maybe, we reasoned, because those were both inspirational and achievable - whereas the behemoth “headliner” layouts are far less so to your “average” modeller.

All in all, a terrific show with lots of scales, gauges and locations (UK, USA, Australia, Japan, European) catering to all tastes. Comparing 3mm/foot to Hornby’s TT:120 was a revelation; the fact both of us were sorely tempted by O gauge is also a testament both to the layouts on display and the growth in O gauge RTR - only our previous investment in OO gauge held us back! 🤣

Best of all, I sourced appropriate nameplates for my mate’s new loco!

Once again, a massive thank you to the organisers, exhibitors and traders that made the show such a great day out.

Thank you on behalf of ALL the organising team. Several are on here including @John of York61 amongst others.

Thanks for the positive comments on South Pelaw. We’re also a bit frustrated by the arrangement of barriers as well as the pillar out the front of the layout — some of the interesting new moves, such as the gravity powered brake van kip are completely invisible.

We're next out at Newcastle in November, so hopefully the end boards will be more visible then.

For me one of the best layouts in the show.

I didn’t draw the floor plan layout and I am posting this as me not as an official show press answer. I guess getting it fitted into available spaces will often be an issue. As an example I doubt we, as in my local WMRA club, could fit it into any of the spaces we have at our show venue.

Apparently, the bootie is cancelled for Saturday. Reason given being poor ground conditions. If it’s a swamp then it probably doesn’t help with the parking.

You beat me to it on here. Yes website now updated.

URGENT UPDATE - Saturday parking is now on the coach park as described on our website for Sunday & Monday. Reason - the car boot sale has been cancelled.

Please watch out for the park runners if arriving early on Saturday.

It won't, it is Saturday. We have the alternative car park set up for Saturday. See https://yorkshow.org.uk/car/  for full parking details.

The correct SatNav setting  for Saturday is the junction of Knavesmire Rd & Knavesmire Ave.

If anyone uses what three words =  https://w3w.co/films.brain.much

A reminder for the less than fully mobile, but non-blue badge holders, arriving by car the Saturday walk to the show entrance is longer than that on Sunday & Monday.

The Park Run may take some on street spaces for very early arrivals as they start at 9am. It is on our car arrivals page. https://yorkshow.org.uk/car/

    Evening everyone.

I was having an email chat with Tony earlier regarding my weathering business. Tony kindly suggested I share some of my recent work in here.

I began weathering professionally back in 2019. I am a peripatetic violin teacher in various schools by trade. Originally it was only ever meant to be a top up to income, but increasingly I've been beginning to rely on it more.

I've become very frustrated with the teaching, and with 400 miles being clocked up for 32 weeks of the year, I'm looking at a change. I'd like to make the weathering more full time, perhaps moving to twice a week, or potentially three times a week.

Anyhow enough of my rambling, here's some examples of my work of late.

Following on from last week's bridge attempts I have now constructed an embankment alongside.

The first step was to construct a skeleton out of card. This was then filled with packing paper, although newspaper would have worked just as well. With so many parcel deliveries of late, boxes are not in short supply in this household!

    IMG_20210130_160535.jpg

I then covered it in mod roc strips and am awaiting it drying over the week. Sorry no pictures of the process - it had the potential to get messy if not kept in check and I don't think that mod roc over the dining room would have gone down well!

    IMG_20210131_133522.jpg

Next step is to paint an earthy colour and then cover with scatter.

I appreciate that there are lots of posts about how I am making the layout and fewer about the trains (although these will come in time). I would hope that these posts may help modellers old and new in detailing ways to do things. When I was new to the hobby it was great to see finished products but sometimes it left me wondering "how was that done?". Anyway, I hope that my posts, whilst no means the best modelling at all, may help people wishing to do the same or similar.

Cheers to everyone for their kind words, "likes" and views too. It means a lot!

Do you still have the photos to reinstate?

Pre-paid at discount through to Good Friday.

Pre-paid through the show period still available but at door prices.

On the door can be cash or card.

Show Guides at the door. Step stool hire (Cash only) will be in the entrance foyer. This has to be cash as there is a returnable deposit.

  12. Very large derailment in Norway. Good job it wasn't a passenger train. It's one thing when our models do it, horrendous on the real thing.

Why they should work in the fiddle yard but not on the scenic section is a complete mystery. They were obviously getting traction current to keep moving, but not receiving the DCC commands. I can only put it down to the ‘sir’ effect. It’s well known that all locos, layouts etc. misbehave when you have been invited to view them!

    Andy

This may or may not be relevant but it reads a bit like something that happened years ago on a club layout. Could there be any random pathway for power through something like the ballast or point rodding?

On that club layout one mystery section that would not isolate, eventually traced to current getting through the ballast. We never really solved why, possibly a stray strand of copper from wire, but it went away after the ballast was removed and the section redone. Possibly something in the glue that is conductive.

It possibly only shows up with the DCC enabled as everything is on/live at the same time whereas normally the section with the fault is off so the path doesn't exist.

Reading my Railway Observer, I can detect a correlation between those RCTS Branches with small, declining attendances and a calendar of meetings consisting almost entirely of slideshows of pre-1968 steam, steam on preserved railways or steam railtours.

Yes. The other change though is due to changes in IT. Modern enthusiasts, whether their interest is in steam or other railway areas don’t have to go to a club meeting to see a presentation on a topic. Back in the 1970s it was join a/the Society, go to the monthly meeting and you got that month’s topic. Today it has progressed so far you don’t need the physical events it is on YouTube within hours, or even live. Lots of other pressures on time, cost of living etc., amplifying that. In the SLS we are trying to adapt with use of zoom (and recordings to aid time shift) but the fact remains (picking a topic at random) if I want to see analysis of Swiss Railways it is probably on YouTube not wait eleven months and hope a speaker will cover it. The social side the key driver for physical attendance.

Societies are in steep decline, perhaps except for line or scale specific one’s, as the information is available freely elsewhere. Model shows might be next, with the from a distance visitors dropping off first. We live in interesting times.

Can anyone tell me if Birchwood Casey Super Blue will actually work on a brass chassis please - the bottle suggests it's intended for steel.  Thanks

Not sure if that is the one I bought tried based on recommendations but it wouldn’t work cold. The bottle is currently inaccessible and I didn’t note it in my posts after the trial. @CF MRC recommended a make when I was up at Missenden recently. Can only suggest buying in person from a gun-shop but checking the notes on the bottle first (I didn’t)  no idea where you live but Sportarm in Dorchester is my nearest. They have been helpful, for example you can buy shot for short gun cartridges but not the cartridges to split yourself if you haven’t a gun licence.

Well that video was quite fun! I wonder if I'm the only one who thought that Peter Kay (Bolton comedian) had grown a beard and taken up model railways?

I'd agree with much of what he said. "Gatekeeping" is one of those modern phrases, belongs a bit to the under 40's, and I think I'd use the word "snobbery" from my era.

It isn't anything new, and took place in spades at the end of steam/ early diesel era. I recall going to the RCTS in Preston in the early 70's as a teenager. Lots of chaps remembering the old days, slide shows of Duchesses on Shap (nothing wrong with either), and a total disdain for anything after August 1968 and "diseasels" (lots wrong with that). They might as well have said "sit down, keep quiet and learn from your betters".

I was lucky. I found an older friend who was interested in diesels, and presented in the right way it was a pleaure to learn from him and listen to his experiences about growing up in Liverpool near Edge Hill in the 40's and 50's. I'm also a contrarian by nature, so the more people tell me that something is pointless, the more interested I get. I could otherwise have been lost to the hobby of railways, and modelling, and I'm sure many people of my (and Clive's age) were.

So I've a lot of empathy with the message in the video, and I still keep thinking of Peter Kay!

    John.

Unfortunately I found when editing the SLS Journal  that only pre-1968 seems to matter remains prevalent.  I did receive a handful of articles on non-steam and/or contemporary matters but they were no more than a 1/3rd of the submissions even being generous.

That works out at £27 per loco....

I also thought they were either low priced (bad for the sellers) or a typo in how much they made. Mind you I haven’t seen much on how well or otherwise they were put together. Didn’t know about it in advance.

  18. Just received confirmation that for Saturday visitors bus Service 21 will run as normal and is a travel option. Website updated.

The 197 to/from the station is running all three days. Note time of last bus to the show is 3pm, last bus back to the station is just after the show closes.

The rail and travel page is here.
