  1. Preservation has always been the paint guide for some people it seems. Back in the early to mid 1970's almost every customer sending their 14XX and 45XX for painting requested a restored engine number, so i had to follow suit and paint it as restored. This of course meant giving it the usual **tarted up appearance not to mention incorrect livery so beloved in those days. Even on 'layout locos', my  clients would not have thanked me for painting over their real brass safety valve covers.

** Incidentally there was a reason behind those early tarted up liveries. With steam still around or recently departed on BR, the emerging heritage lines had to look different and distinctive.

Hence some the odd liveries at Keighley etc (Ivatt 2-6-2T leaps to mind). Also why a lot of railways often shy away from "Banger blue" or later liveries for diseasels, as there is a perception that punters don't want to be reminded of bad commutes or similar.

  2. See post #776.

I assume these are reduced as they aren't selling well due to it being quite a niche livery, and also a number that's quite recently been released.

Vaguely considered buying one to repaint, but haven't researched how far back in time the body is valid with the headlight.

  3. These are the little dears that have been stripping our Rowan this afternoon, resting in a tree over the road between gobbles!

Photos taken with my Canon Ixus 170

We haven't been able to photograph them from home since 15th Dec 10, though they were around in subsequent winters, but not posing right outside the bedroom window.

Not too bad for urban Cardiff, though.

  4. True, considering most of the population are loathed to walk more than a few hundred yards, ever noticed how the crowd thins out on the beach the further you walk from the car park.

There was a survey done in the Lake District about 20 years ago, which found that the average day tripper to the National Park walked just over 100 yards (ie café/ pub/ WCs/ gift shop). I suspect it's similar there now, and around the rest of the country.

  5. Avebury is far better than Stonehenge. Wandering amongst the stones at dawn or dusk is magical (open access to most of it), plus The Avenue, Silbury Hill and West Kennett Long Barrow (oh, and my aunty lives there), and a lot cheaper than Stonehenge.

Pembrokeshire just as pretty as Cornwall and much quieter. If we go to Cornwall, we go off peak (October a few years ago, and February next year.)

  6. Rumour has it there was a suicide attempt off one of the bridges .... the 48 was closed at M4 shortly after I joined it! Hope all resolved ok...

And not a carp to be seen - but the jams were on a large scale, and never seemed to fin-ish

Back on thread - a peacock here in Cheltenham yesterday - but I suspect not today, much colder!

    Phil

Ah, that would make sense, will skate over the typo, I know my plaice.

  7. Was at a meeting at The Park Inn

    About 3 mins from here!

I got stuck on it eastbound before 1000, whilst giving a driving lesson, don't know if there was an incident. Westbound was always going to be busy because of the eggchasing in town later. I presume you don't mean carp park, it hadn't been raining ;) Anyway Red Ad about 200m from home yesterday PM.

  8. Cardiff is plainly a hotspot

Saw a Peacock in Pentwyn today

Also have some of those Buddlea Buzz - mine arrived earlier in the year and have flowered but have yet to see a butterfly on them

A few minutes up the road from me. Phil. I also saw one over the road from the house early PM yesterday.

  10. Now that colder weather has come and the butterflies are a distant memory I thought I would rummage through my picture archive for a few reminders of summer - starting with a chalkhill blue.

Still a few Red Ads out in Forest of Dean and near Newport last weekend, also one in Cardiff yesterday. Doubt I'll see any more as temperature dropping now.
