  1. The L&Y had quite an extensive overhead system that always gets overlooked. I belive at least one fairly handsome electric locomotive was built as well as the EMUs. Then there's the NSR battery electrics but unfortunately electric milage in the UK pre-1923 was rather pitiful compared to our continental counterparts. I do love the NER system; I just cannot imagine why the LNER decided to take it all down in 1938 rather than renew it. The EF1s were fine looking machines but the one-off EE1 was an absolute masterpiece. It's also a window in to an alternative world where electrification was embraced more widely after WW1. I imagine had the NER lasted a bit longer (let's say grouping happened in 1930 or so) and the electrification was expanded the LNER's electric network would have very much resembled that of it's transatlantic counterpart the PRR by 1948. I'd love a model of the EE1 but I'm afraid the Judith Edge kit is well beyond my skill level. It could be fairly easily scratchbuilt out of plasticard if it didn't have those magnificent wheels...
  2. Interesting. I wonder if there's a market for a specialist software for this? Have Guilplates stopped making new transfers in 4mm, or stopped making them altogether? If so, are there any other options re NBR?
  3. The dodgy proportions of the Hornby model don't bother me too much but I will fill in those awful upside down 'u' spectacle plates. Looks like bronze green it is then, it's a more attractive livery anyway! I do quite like the idea of these paper overlays, what software do you use? I've tried it before but where I struggled was that I couldn't 'measure' in the program so I had no clue how big they were going to be in real life. Thanks for the link to the Guilplates site, I'll see about contacting them by email. Apart from the upcoming J36 there's not really much about RTR or kit-based for the NBR is there? I reckon a GBL Caley Single could be bashed in to a 474 2-2-2 rather easily as well by the looks of it, and you could probably get a fairly decent Abbotsford out of a T9. The ubiquitous Hornby Pug *might* make a passable Y9 with some surgery.
  4. That would be very helpful, thankyou! I've already been looking at NBR brake vans to scratchbuild...slippery slope comes to mind.
  5. Hello I have purchased a J83 bodyshell on the cheap to backdate in to it's original NBR condition. However I have run in to a few problems whilst researching how to do this. For a start; I am confused by the variations on the safety valves. Hornby have modelled them behind the dome, and they are seen in this position on this drawing: However, this model shows the safety valves on top of the dome: It is also in green livery; which I believe was only carried by Waverley station pilots. If that is the case; is the safety valve arrangement seen here unique to these locomotives? I assume that for the period I want to represent (1918 to 24ish) they were goods black, lined out a la 'Maude'. However in post WW1 b&w pictures of NBR locomotives no lining appears visible. My final question is; where to get the transfers? I haven't had any luck sourcing 4mm NBR locomotive transfers so far. They preferably need to be N==###==B format for the immediate pre-grouping period.
  6. Seems to be the only place. It says 'Available to order' on the item, I take it that means they have none in stock but can order them in from Japan?
  7. I'm afraid much like Hornby's Class 800 Hitachi test train limited edition it is useless to me as it does not come with matching coaches
  8. Hi, I have always had a bit of a fascination with the Japanese 'Bullet trains' and I would like a model of the original O-Series Shinkansen. However I am struggling to find one in any scale for a reasonable price. Ideally, I'd want the Kato O-Series Shinkansen starter set with track and controller, but they seem to be as rare as hen's teeth in this country. There is a used one on eBay right now but the model is scratched and the pantograph is damaged, and nowhere am I going to find a new one. Does anyone know where I could get this set in the UK, preferably south of £200? Is there a reasonable HO version available? Could Hornby/Bachmann/Rapido tackle it seeing as one is technically part of the National Collection?
  9. Looks like 4492 Dominion of New Zealand (actually Bittern in a cunning disguise) not SNG.
  10. Does anyone know if 777 will be ready for the gala at the end of January? The website states it is under repair.
  11. Out of interest, when is the next shipment of the 'normal range' P2 due? I've just ordered one from modelmarket. I'm not impatient, just looking for a consensus given Hatton's estimates are often incorrect.
  12. Would it not be possible to butcher a Bachmann P Witt in to a Mumbles car? The windows on the lower deck are quite similar, and a P Witt is about the right size too.
