  1. I went to Didcot today and I must admit City of Truro looked great in its new livery. David

The bus service will be run by a vintage routemaster bus.
  3. The front of the pannier tanks really should be black not green, other wize a nice job. David
  4. Most of the ex GWR locos had black tops. David
  5. I use 51L bearings that are deeper than the exactoscale versions, although there is variations in these and in my latest batch and had to deepen the bearings with a drill, Ultrascale do a tool that will deepen bearings. Also I replace the spring wire with 8thou that does give a softer spring. David
  6. Just thought I would say what a great taste in music you have.

  7. In the old York museum it was lined, while in Swindon chapel museum it was unlined although you could see the 1957 lining under the plain green. really for unlined livery it should have a 3500 gallon tender, hence the most correct livery for its current condition would be 1920 lined with black frames. David
  8. I think thats what I just said. I feel that it should be lined rather than just plain green.
  9. Unlined green is more correct for the condition COT is in now although the brass beading to the splashers was reapplied in 1957, it was removed around 1914 (I will need to check my books) I would like to see her restored with black frames lined out with Great (garter) Western on the tender as no preserved loco carries this livery and could retain the brass beading. David
  10. I have just read in Steam Railway that City of Truro is to be repainted with black frames and numbered 3717 for GWR 175 this year. David
  11. The image of the limited edition 7007 Great Western in the Hornby 2010 range seems to have the wrong front cylinder cover with the early curved corners. David
  12. Interesting thing about City of Truro is the brass beading when built followed the arc of the splashers and also the straight part were it joined the footplate, the brass beading was completely removed I think around 1914, although when returned to service in 1957 the brass beading was restored but only to the curved part, and remains like that today. Athough detail is the whistles as built the smaller one was on the right, this later changed to the left which I think it retained though the first restoration in 1957, although currently they have seemed to have been swapped around again. David
  13. I understand the current indian red colour was matched on the 1985 restoration by scraping the paint back to the first layer found on the frames. The double lining I think has the effect of lighting the green colour, although I think the green still does look too light, as built it is very unlikely CoT had double lining in fact the lining would be orange/black/orange rather than the later orange/green/black/green/orange. In the 1957 restoration the sandboxes were red as was the spacing plate below the name plate and splasher, as built there were no sandboxes above the footplate, although I think they look better red, and I am sure the spacing plate should match the frames. David
  14. Looking at plotos it seems that the large wheeled locos such as the City's required the footplate on the tender to have the spacing framework, on locos like the Dean goods with smaller wheels the footplate of the loco was lower requiring no spacer. David
  15. It seems like they have missed out the spacing framework on the tender footplate, this was required on the prototype to allow the loco footplate to be level as dependent on what class of loco the tender was coupled to, I remember building a Martin Finney kit and I think there were parts to ensure you could couple to any class type. David
  16. Me too...........straight boiler, no top feed, cast iron chimney...........maybe a later Bachmann release? The city's always had taper boilers, the Atbaras had parallel boilers when built but were later rebuilt into the City class. David
  17. I think I would still go for the Martin Finney Kit http://website.lineone.net/~cbwesson/GWR%20City.htm Note that the photo shows how City of Truro should look with Indian red frames in as built condition, it has no copper cap chimney sandboxes top feed etc, I would like see CoT in green and black lined out with Great (garter crest) Western on the tender. The current livery and condition annoys me as much as Flying Scotsman with smoke in apple green livery. The Martin Finney 4mm kit is ??96, you needs to get a tender, wheels, and motor plus inside working motion. So you are heading for ??200 before you start it plus it need painting and lining, so in reality the Bachman model maybe is good value for money. David
  18. Interesting choice to model City of Truro, as the locos present condition and livery is only suitable for the preserved era. When built in 1903 with Indian red frames the loco had no top feed, no patched frames, shorter smoke box, no splasher sandboxes and a host of other differences. When it ceased working in 1930 the livery would have been plain green numbered 3717 and coupled to a 3500 gallon tender. Even when running in its first preserved form in 1957 the Indian red was more of an orange shade and the splasher sandboxes were painted red instead of the green it now carries. In fact the double lining the loco now carries is hardly correct as when built it would have had the standard lining orange, black, and orange. David
  19. Not my model but a layout I have been taking photos for a future MRJ, although lacking in depth of field I do like, and will revisit and get a better shot in the future. David
  20. I go with Masokits you need to solder them up but they are cheep and look good, I am not too sure what you mean by working as the Exactoscale are the only ones with a screw you can tighten up. David
