When I was doing my initial training in the RAF we were dragged off taken to the Brecon Beacons for a torture session fun filled luxury camping two week holiday in February. I don't think I have ever been so cold, tired and miserable in my life, and that includes doing the winter survival course in Bavaria.

My dad's basic training was Bridgnorth - on their first night out they got heavily drunk on local scrumpy and my dad said he never touched a drop since !

  3. Mention must be made in despatches of FS Williams's seminal work and I find it is still an enjoyable read and a valuable - if naturally rose tinted - view of the expansion of the Midland. Although reprinted by David & Charles in 1968 ("with an introduction and corrigenda by C.R.Clinker ") and readily available for a reasonable cost (as are 19th century original copies), the fifth edition (1888) is free to read online.

    Confusion.

I have just received and unboxed Coldstream Guardsman and a quick inspection revealed what I thought was an unpainted spot on the nose, just to the right of the left hand lower grab handle. Identical at both ends, so obviously intentional.

Looking at the engineering sample, the first photograph, above, shows that there is a hole in that position. I can't find any evidence of it from a very brief review of photographs of class 45s.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

    Thanks,

    Bob

Some class 25s and 40s had a circular blanking plate on the nose ends from royal train duty to facilitate a radio communication wire from the train to the cab. See link below

    Royal Trains

I don't recall a class 45 being used on Royal duty, however.

I don’t want to add to any woes, but are those roof hatches on the model rather thick and over pronounced ?

Well if you want to score points about relief features, how do Bachmann footstep blanking plates compare with the original?

The nose doors don't seem to be very visible - or at all in fact!

My fears exactly - no relief whatsoever in the doors and weathering only served to mask them even more.

The green ends appeared better represented than the yellow.

A shame as I'd have bought a blue D15 if the doors were well presented as it was their stand out feature.

out of interest did any one mention about the fell loco to kr models at the show this weekend any responces please thanks

The sample on display (EP) has been running on the rolling road for a very long time and performed flawelessly.

The green livery was in a satin / eggshell finish and looked lovely. That was the livery that was signed off and was expected to be delivered.

Personally, I'd prefer to wait until I have a phisical model to look at then use online photos.

The images shown are taken at different angles. One looking down at the model whilst the other is looking up at the prototype. That changes the perspective and makes straight comparisons difficult.

I feel it's a case of paying your money and making your choice here.

Same here - I'm very keen on a TMC special edition D15 but the nose doors look very low relief in the sample photos and I'd like to see one in the wild (hopefully GETS or Warley) before taking the plunge.

I'd be really surprised if they were, there must be a limit to the number of Peaks that can be sold with their own earlier releases and presumably Heljan soon too. Even if flawed, it'd have to be risky.

How many different manufactures have released the Class 37 and 47 ?

Then Bachmann issue an all new version with bells and whistles - which sells.

Would a brand new 45/46 really be such a risk compared with the above ?

I'd be happy with a Class 40 with 4mm scale blue star detail on the bogie, not 7mm 😆
