  1. In unrelated news, a representative from Bachmann was at Kidderminster diesel depot yesterday taking measurements and photographing every detail of D182 to improve their future class 45 and 46 models.

This might be of interest to those who consider Bachmann's model to be a more accurate 'shape'.

  2. Bachmann's achilles in diesel locos have always been the very poor buffer beam detail, especially the ETH and multiple working cables and connectors.

The class 40 MW bogie details is 0 gauge !

Heljan has always been far superior definition in this respect.

The problem with 'not quite right' models in niche market areas is that it truly spoils the pitch for anybody else due to the level of investment needed.  With the mess that was made of the Olivia's EM1 it will be an awful long time, if ever, before we see an accurate one.  And - albeit with other changes such as ever more appearing as well - their EM1 was the thing that tipped the balance with me and finally put me off buying less than accurate 'like to have/fun train' models.  Good thing I suppose is that it made me concentrate far more on what was relevant to the time/era I model although I still buy a few 'oddballs' buy only if they are what I regard as accurate enough and do the job.

But we're all different and the fact that we are probably does good for some parts of the market as long as folk have money to spend on model railways.

The rivet counters that are complaining that the proposed Fell model lacks detail nuances appropriate to the liveries on offer rather amuse me.

I never saw the real thing and even if it is not 100% authentic it will be perfectly at home on a Peak District based layout - because it looks like a Fell and a bloody good job KRM are doing if they get the mechanicals spot on, even if people wish to deploy rule 1 and add the extra connecting rods to their black machine despite an inappropriate number of roof vents or whatever!

I wonder how many people decrying it's detail inaccuracies would - if presented with nirvana - just slap tension locks or kadees on it anyway :-)

@Holmesfeldian, lovely photos and real carriage-spotter bait.

The two of Unstone viaduct are both post-1907 (loco numbers on tenders and carriages in post-1906 livery with large class designation numbers on the doors. In the first photo, with cows:

    • H-boilered 4-4-0, can't make out the number
    • 2 x D399 19 ft 6 in horsebox
    • foreign horsebox (note widows are higher up)
    • D412 prize cattle van
    • D529 25 ft arc-roof 4-wheel passenger brake van
    • 3 x D490 43 ft arc roof bogie third

    Bottom photo, without cows:

    • 1400 Class 2-4-0 No. 229
    • D397 16 ft 2 in horsebox
    • D490 43 ft arc roof bogie third
    • non-corridor clerestory brake; I can't decide if its a D530 31 ft 6-wheel passenger brake van or the brake end of a bogie vehicle.

The Dronfield photo is the one that really appeals to me, as it's closer to my modelling period. It is, however, post-Feb 1903, as the lamp-iron has been removed from the smokebox door, following adoption of the RCH headcodes, leaving just the one at the top of the smokebox, but before the Deeleyfication of the smokebox and chimney - i.e. probably before c. 1907-8.

    • Unidentified 2-4-0
    • D399 19 ft 6 in horsebox
    • D530 31 ft square-light clerestory 6-wheel passenger brake van
    • D263 40 ft arc roof bogie composite
    • D490 43 ft arc roof bogie third
    • D491 33 ft 6 in square-light clerestory 6-wheel third
    • D499 48 ft square-light clerestory bogie lavatory third brake

There's not much first class accommodation in these trains.

When it comes to identifying the Clayton arc-roof carriages of the 1880s / early 90s in train photos, counting the door ventilators is the first step. As a rule of thumb:

    • five - 6-wheeler
    • six - 40 ft bogie
    • seven - 43 ft or 45 ft bogie
    • more - 54 ft 12-wheeler

After that, it comes down to spotting where there's a wider panel between compartments, indicating first class compartments.

A further tasty image has come to light of Unstone viaduct if you could be so kind as to comment on the loco and rolling stock please...

In that film, in the scene in the Telephone Enquiry Bureau, you may recall the earnest young man with a squeaky voice, desperately trying to get the caller to reveal what was wanted. Gerry Uzzell, originally from Exeter, and my boss as Operating Officer, South Eastern Division 1982-4. Delightful to work for and with. The Christmas cards stopped about a decade ago, sadly......

I posted this comment on the British Transport Films Facebook group and I’m delighted to say that Gerry’s son, Philip responded....

”Happy to report that Gerry (Dad) is still with us, albeit after a number of health scares, he is not at his Xmas card writing best these days. His appearance in the film are family folklore.”

I helped organise this tour back in the day of the South Yorkshire Transport Society and have a few pictures taken on the day.

Regrettably old age precludes remembering too much of the details, is there anything on Six Bells?

    Mike.

Hi Mike - as you were involved with the SYTS, have you information regarding this rail tour please ?

There is no information on six bells junction though on the day in question, steam shuttles worked from Paddington to Old Oak Common for the depot open day so the two events are no doubt connected!
