  1. Serves me right for trying to help someone!!!

An item I was selling was due to finish about 7:30 this evening.

It had been sat at about £6 for a few days but this afternoon

I had three bids taking it to £11.50.

Around 5 o'clock had a message from the last bidder

asking if I would cancel his last bid, item no longer required!!

I was out at the time, tried to cancel the bid on my phone but wasn't able to.

Got home about 10 min before bidding ended.

By the time I'd managed to cancel the bid, there was about two minutes left.

The item eventually sold for £6. What I didn't realise was the bidder

had put in two bids,  Not sure if I did something wrong but

both their bids were cancelled, taking the selling price back to

what it was before their first bid.

£5:50 lost through trying to help someone :)

Is that a tunnel or a long bridge? Cut and cover, at any rate.

I'm sure there are many other definitions, but here are two picked at random:

Tunnel: an artificial underground passage, especially one built through a hill or under a building, road, or river.

Bridge: a structure carrying a road, path, railway, etc. across a river, road, or other obstacle.

  3. Having just read that the Warley show at the NEC is no more,

and with the news earlier in the week about Hattons closing,

I can't help but wonder if the third bit of "big news" will be

that Gostude is to cease trading on Ebay.  :)

Seen this in Rail mag, says WCRC will have to fit CDL on its coaches by Feb 29 or cease mainline operations. Not just Jacobite. Is this news or have I been a bit slow?

I guess WCRC should consider themselves fortunate that it's a leap year,

meaning they have an extra day to complete the work. :)

  5. I only managed to get to Warley once, in 2022,

(tis a long trek from darkest Devon), so am glad

I've been able to tick that one off my bucket list.

I really enjoyed it, and, as others have said,

I was amazed that a group of volunteers was able

to organise  something on such a large scale.

Would agree with what has already been said about how

the announcement has been made, "going out on a high",

    which they truly deserve

I know that we've occasionally picked on Hattons second hand offerings, though they've not generated the same amount of fun that we've had with Rails flights of fancy, but today Hattons have announced that they are closing their doors.  They've NOT gone bust, but are selling up in an orderly manner.

I'm sure we'll miss them, they have has a long history in model railways retail.

For 3d cad I’d recomend fusion360, both for being free and there is a good YouTube channel explaining how to use it for railway modelling purposes.

Fusion 360 is a good system but I'm not sure I would

    recommend it for a beginner/newbie.

I have used other 2D & 3D CAD previously, including AutoCAD

but didn't find Fusion 360 that easy to pick up

Clearly not paying attention at the back ! ................................... nothing new, unfortunately, but yes, Oh Dear !

From what I remember the argument went something like

buses/coaches stop at bus/coach stations not road stations,

so trains must stop at a train station not a railway station.

(Oh dear, have I just opened the worm can lid again) :(

Pretty much anything built post privatisation will be nigh on impossible to maintain and be useful long term… IT hardware failures will push restorability beyond reach… the software will be long out of support, the processors long out of production and developers unavailable… then theres complexity in managing the electronics which have their own life spans…

While I agree with you on this point, I can't help wondering

how many people felt the same looking at Barry scrapyard.

Building new fireboxes, casting new cylinders, nah, you got to be joking!!

    But look what's been achieved.

So, restoring failed hardware, unsupported software.

A lot of the work that's been done on preserved railways

is down to retired railway employees sharing their years

    of acquired knowledge and skill

There is a new generation of techies heading towards retirement now,

who knows where their acquired knowledge and will be put to use.

Think maybe as "enthusiasts", we need to recognise that we are being priced out by the buying power of 2+2 taking a trip on a steam train, or those after a more up market luxury dining experience.  Those seem to be the things that sell, and make money, and those are the things that a "professional" setup lends itself well to delivering. There's not much money in providing seats for rivet counters like me who just want a plain old ride on a plain old train, without all the froth of bums on seats hype. I think the days of traditional preserved railways are numbered, more and more they will have to present themselves as attractions, like theme parks, or experience days. Looking at the NYMR website, it is clearly geared to the "day out" market, the normals who want an experience,  there's not much appealing to the enthusiasts there.

    Not sure I agree there.

I spent a very enjoyable day on a local preserved railway last week.

I had "plain old rides on a plain old train" for a reasonable price

Extras for the 2+2 where there if wanted.

I would suggest what is pushing prices up in preserved railways

is running costs, (fuel etc) and wages.

Every eBay purchase is a good buy, or you wouldn't have bought it, I know I wouldn't purchase a bad buy, unless I'm missing something?

    Mike.

This thread should help to ensure that is the case.

The more madness that is highlighted, the easier it is to avoid it.

  12. Diverging a bit (shock, horror), I've just finished wiring up my Kato turnouts, (30 of 'em)

and i used 16mm x 16mm trunking fixed to the edge of the board.

Where the wires reach the edge of the board, I cut a notch in

the lower side of the trunking, and fed the wire in through.

When the cover strip is fitted to the trunking, the notches aren't visible.

The wires do have to be tied though, or they tend to get in the way

when trying to snap the cover on.

I think this is precisely why I don't like the media treatment of this story. If it's your own or your wife's stuff then it is not taxable, full stop. If you do ever get a letter from HMRC then note it and inform them of the case. It's perfectly reasonable after a lifetime to downsize one's possessions and if the money is used to augment your pension that seems entirely prudent.

I totally agree with you but I guess the weak part in that statement is how do you define "personal stuff".

Yes it means stuff you have but no longer want/need, but anything you buy becomes your personal stuff.

I could buy a loco on eBay one week, and sell it the next week making a profit, but I bought it, so therefore

it was mine, albeit only for a few days

How typical - when will the thick people at the DfT realise that you are not going to attract passengers back to the trains if you are constantly making the experience worse!

With rail fares so high that if there is more than one person making the trip using a car is much cheaper in cost terms, Rail has to compete largely on service and amenities - both of which a steady being ripped up by idiots in Whitehall and their political masters who are inching to find ways of cutting taxes before or after the next election and to hell with the consequences.

Meanwhile the DfT continues to waste millions with stupid but expensive deckchair re- arranging like GBR!

I can't help feeling a slight sense of deja vu here.

About sixty years ago I remember people saying that

British Railways seemed to be deliberately driving people

away by removing apparently well used services.

Then they called in some guy called Beeching,

    who recommended closing lines because

    they weren't being used.

Yeah it stinks basically. Another attempt to audit everyone's assets down to the penny along with a cashless society. If you sell your car for 2k does that mean you pay tax on it. What if you bought it 2nd hand with cash 5 years ago?  Can you prove you're not selling it for a profit? People will sell on marketplace or car boot fairs if they're clever

Or is it another case of the the few spoiling it for the rest???

    '00n3 gauge' and '3-rail'??

Is that why it's described as OO DCC Gauge.

I didn't realise DCC affected the gauge.
