Morning Rob,
Wow !
There's a blast from the past...........To quote...
"Peace of mind produces right values, right values produce right thoughts. Right thoughts produce right actions and right actions produce work which will be a material reflection for others to see of the serenity at the center of it all "
Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Railway Modelling.
Yeah baby !
But it would appear that my serenity is somewhat disturbed. Things are a tad more frantic this morning than I would have preferred........I'm hoping to sort out the fiddle yard today, if and I stress if, the day goes to plan.
Mmmmm
One's breath is not being held..
Rob.
Good morning Rob,
Ironically I've been going through a similar phase with the "foreign one" and keep looking at it with subjective eyes, and then outa the blue my order for 7mm sleepers arrive !
That now means I have split my thoughts for both projects......not helping........out for another ride me thinks !

Lot of development occurred in the '30s and obviously LM got its fair share of it, it would seem.
I wonder what the local Parish Council had to say at their meetings about all this "modern stuff" ?
Was it the equivalent of

Thanks Grahame, I saw the photos of your old layout on your thread recently. Have you never been tempted to start another. The BGS ironwork etch is very nice but 33.60 is a bit out of my price range. I think it's also designed for single baulk road and not mixed gauge. I could be wrong on that though.
Hi Charlie,
I still have a few bits, including some BGS rail but if it was used to start something else I would have to be very pragmatic with its use, that said I have been tempted !
As for the etch I agree it is rather expensive now, I think I probably paid around half todays price many years ago when it first appeared and even then it was expensive.
My resin cast also included the ballast insert which made it quite stable and was deliberately done to save the messy business of ballasting. I'm certain even in small lengths it could be 3D printed and as and when I get myself one I will definitely give it a try.
My only concerns would be the small tolerances for gauging hence producing single lengths for each side.
The one other possible problem is the longitudinal timber ties wouldn't match if they were scarfed as the original ones were but at this scale I wouldn't let it concern me. Oh ! not forgetting the metal tie rods too ! ( Getting a bit too "hair shirt" modelling now ! ).

Have you been to Amsterdam, the bike riders are dangerous silent wheeled death machines in the night.
Also, they don't have traditional breaks on most bikes, they brake by back pedalling, so letting tourists loose on them adds to the terror they bring those on foot.
I've contemplated using them, one of the hotels even had some to lend, but I did not like the idea of trying to navigate around in them. There is a major park, in parts it was like Piccadilly circus in the rush hour but all bikes.
No sense of adventure !

Interesting challenges with the Baulk road Charlie, it reminds me of the days ( long gone ) when I used a similar method to Ian with copper clad and BGS rail soldered onto it.
The most challenging for me at the time was using the BGS Point & Crossing Ironwork etched nickel silver product which made a big difference to the overall looks.
One thing that has crossed my mind whilst reading your enjoyable thread is that with your ability to produce such good 3D items have you ever considered producing a Baulk road sub base onto which the rails could be affixed ?
I did make a straight piece master of Baulk road years ago and cast it in a resin, now long gone too, but the principal worked well.
If a decent 3D printer had been available back then I would have definitely tried to produce something similar.
Also would it be worth trying to 3D print one side of the Baulks which could then provide you with one side of a "Flexi-track" system and then use a gauge to set the other side ?
Please excuse my off the top of my head thinking out loud approach.

I thought about one of those but the hassle of the special clothing in anything other than sunshine put me off. I can walk to anywhere where I would want one of these for with the added benefit of improving my physical fitness.
An expensive toy.
I'm am sorry that you feel that way about my "expensive toy" .
One could argue the fact until the cows come home but in my position it is far better suited than an old blokes electric "go cart" eg mobility scooter.
Until a few months ago I was told to slow down when walking anywhere because friends and family had difficulty keeping up with me.
Since retirement physical fitness has been very much at the top of my daily list, now having had problems with an Achilles tendon the electric "toy" suits my needs until it regains its strength.
As for the clothes etc, it's my choice and I'm still out in the fresh air and only really inclement weather stops me from getting out.
I trust you will benefit from walking and your fitness remains.

The day after I retired ( 10 years ago - wahoo ! ) I took the decision to sell my vehicle after 40 + years of driving.
Having moved from the edge of Dartmoor to an urban environment approximately 2 + years ago I would either use the local train service or my electric cruiser in and around the city.
This is the pedal assist electric bike
As you can see it gets me to some interesting places locally but I have tended to not ride on main roads too much hence this....
All electric and most suited to the roads without polluting and extremely enjoyable. Far cheaper to purchase and run than a "box on wheels" for local commutes and enjoyment.
Approximate charging cost < 60p for 40-50 miles so to me it's a no -brainer and if I ever need to hire a car it would certainly be an electric powered one.

Hi Alex,
