Hi Steve. As for the coupling hook I drill a .5mm hole at tge top and bottom of where the hook will pass through then use a brand new scapel blade to work between the two hole. A middle hole sometime aids this. Lanarkshire model supplies do the oval buffers in whitemetal or peters spares used to do the top spec Hornby 31 buffers.

How realistic are your models? Photo challenge.

Some great pictures of DP1 here looking less than spotless. https://dieselfutures.tumblr.com/post/124930921843/english-electric-dp1-deltic-prototype -
Show us yours - Realistic modelling

Good question. I feel the answer is the latter. I would put it in slightly different terms; a showcase of excellence in railway modelling perhaps. However we come at the hobby, it is grounded in some way as a representation of a real world thing, usually trains and their environment. No-one is bound by this but it is the starting point. Even steam punk is representing a real place or time. From a personal stand point, I enjoy looking at images of other's modelling and love the "double take" moment. I like participating in this side of the hobby also. If I saw a steam punk layout which looked "real" I would enjoy it to the same extent as a "traditional" layout. Of lots of hobbies, many people in railway modelling seem disdainful of high standards and I am puzzled why. I have stated elsewhere it seems most of the most talented modellers in the hobby just crack on with what they love doing. It seems the best stuff comes from those who just love what they do. Plaudits and attention are a happy symptom of this. -
Modelling mojo and state of mind
westernviscount replied to Coldgunner's topic in Modelling musings & miscellany
One thing I have learned; I have never worked with a friend. I did convince myself several times to the contrary as they seem so much like friends, but I was wrong each time. I might as well quote Rimmer from Red Dwarf the few times I have made a leaving speech..."over the last few years I have grown to think of you as...people I met." Never mind the rule of thumb, I employ the rule of arm's length when it comes to work. -
I will certainly look forward to this. I enjoy reading about other folks' hobbying philosophies, to a greater extent than reading about their methods (although this is still of interest).

Wagons and Coaches for Templefield

Back to some modelling. A parkside BY kit with some additional biys and bobs. A couple of addition include the scraping away of handrails and door handles and replacement with .3mm brass wire. White metal buffers, hooks, vac pipes and torpedo vents from Lanarkshire. I replaced the guards steps with scratch built brass ones. Some of the brake gear was scratched up from brass wire. Parkside supply plastic rod for the underframe bracing which I replaced with .5mm wire. Note the white plastikard along the solebar. These are to widen the gap between the solebars so the W irons are not pushed out tok far and the wheels spin freely. I read of this technique in the railway modeller. -
Let's see your Airfix/Kitmaster kit

Excellent modelling. I particularly like the speckled rusting on the end panels. Very nice. -
Hi Tony, Yes I store images on my computer, my phone, which is my primary mode of photography (heresy?) and google photos. Thankfully the lost images are merely lost to rmweb which I assume will either re-appear or can be uploaded again if needs be. Thank you very much for your comments about my work Tony! Cheers Dave

Many thanks @zr2498 and @Tony Wright. I am very pleased the images are appreciated. I do have a thread about weathering below but sadly some images are missing due to the great crash. I will take Tony's kind invitation to post here from time to time of course.

A couple of weathered items from me... A cambrian kits walrus finished with powders. Parkside shock open, painted with enamels and weathered with powders, applied heavily into wet matt varnish on the metal work to create textured rusting. A very close shot of a parkside vanfit. Red primer, layered bauxite tones using enamel, overall covering with acrylic brown then attacked with white spirit and a cocktail stick to create wood texture. An upgraded (depending how you see it!) Lima LMS guv. Weathered with powders fixed with acrylic varnish spray. And a Dapol standard brake, duckets weathered with rust powders applied to wet varnish. Maskol applied in random rust patterns then painted over with acrylic grey and maskol peeled away. Along with a mineral using the same process as the duckets above. Potentially too rusty for an operational wagon. Cheers for now, Dave

Painting on Evergreen plastic.

I always use halfords grey or red primer. It gives an excellent finish. The very best I have used is humbrol acrylic grey primer but it is not as economical as halfords. -
Indeed Tony. The problem is the interpretation of rule 1 being solely about someone running what they like, where they like, when they like. They are at the top of the pyramid in terms of having fun. Fun apparently diminishes as the standard of modelling increases and restriction of stock tightens! This, through experience and observation of others seems completely wrong and a simplistic view of the hobby. As I have observed elsewhere, having fun and enjoyment can involve a concentrated face and deep immersion in the hobby.

What a joy an understanding wife is.

Slightly (majorly) off topic but I used to love Britains "toys" as a kid. The detail was superb! As for understanding S.O. and family, mine are very much so and my daughter got involved building a Dapol cottage this evening in place of xbox time! It is for a diorama for her collectible teddy bear ornaments after all! I think she felt quite grown up using Dad's tools! She is thankfully too young to be able to feign interest in my hobby..I think!! -
I think this is superb. Would you mind summarising your weathering technique? Your results are excellent.

Hi Stewart. Thank you for your kimd comments. Sadly no.76 came out well before my serious modelling days. I was starting to dirty some of my then precious lima diesels though!!

Thicker cutting edge
westernviscount replied to cliff park's topic in Card structure modelling forum
If you want a thicker rule, you might also try one of these... Its a clear acrylic rule which is pretty standard with a steel edge for use with a knife. So you can see through it and use for drawing and positioning as well as cutting. You can also get 60cm ones I think. I like the 5mm squared area for easier positioning. Mine is by JAKAR.- 1 reply

Incidentally, I think it is reasonable to suggest that the word prejudice has connotations beyond the dictionary definition as do many words these days. Using it in this context is cynical and its inappropriateness is compounded by the dictionary definition having to be cited. I am happy to see I am not alone in thinking its use is not quite right. This all points to a level of intwinedness between the real person and life online which I don't want to be involved with. There is little to suggest here that anyone of us is a particularly loathsome person...me included I would hope. I shall be rattling about elsewhere on the forum as ever but I am done with this thread. Enjoy.
