Musing Momentous Modelling Moments
westernviscount replied to westernviscount's topic in Modelling musings & miscellany
Another influential moment in terms of modelling was my Dad's repaint of a Hornby class 47 in the late eighties. The notion of being able to transform a model into something personal has stayed with me!! Sadly i don't have a photograph but he sanded back the moulded paint lines and hand painted it into early intercity livery and added etched nameplates "Galloway Princess". It still exists somewhere back home. Cheers for now. -

BR MK1 full brake interior
westernviscount replied to westernviscount's topic in UK Prototype Questions
Thanks @37114 really enjoying thos project. Cheers @45125. What is your source for this? Seems like an odd material for a coach floor?? Thanks @The Johnster. I was thinking of doing a layer of wood as per the martyn welch approach then a layer of grey and scratch this away. Wood the floor be wood panels or lino? Thanks again chaps. -
BR mk1 BG interior
westernviscount replied to westernviscount's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Sorry folks, i posted this in wrong forum! Have moved to prototype quetions. Cheers for now. Dave -
Hi folks, Could someone help me out with some info about the inside of a BR MK1 BG? I hope to model one with its doors open being loaded/unloaded. I hope to have pictures or a description of the floor. I imagine it to be distressed plywood or lino? Also, any pics or info about loads would be great. Would BRUTE trolleys be wheeled on and off? Many thanks in advance. Here's progress so far... Cheers for now, Dave

Count me in please Alun!! Great work! I have had to go with a non-prototypical mash up for my fruit d so some proper ones would be great!! Dave -

Impromptu meat van butchery

Nice work on the vans @Dubloseven. Good idea using the parkside chassis and i think if i was starting the kit from scratch i would do the same. Yes @46444 i was looking at a picture of one of these recently in the ale van guise. I am going for a late 60s early 70s set of 12t van generic markings with the xp within a square type decals. Cheers for now -

Looks like a nice base model and some excellent additional work. I modified a Dapol version, taking back the rain strips and going for the set up you have chosen. I have seen photos and videos of at least 2 other set ups. One being similar to yours and mine but with them oriented the other way with incline left to right with a kink in it. Another, one long arcing rain strip per side from one end to the other. This photo is in the book goods wagons for modeller and historian. Another nice piece of modelling! -

Cheers @rodent279. I realise thay the buckeye is dart castings. The end gangway plate and buffers are comet. They are well worth doing. I am sure the lining for the maroon livery would cover a ridge if there was one anyway. The replica model is a damn fine example of a mk1. I had a couple of intercity ones i fooloshly gave away as a teen when trains weren't cool!! Silly boy! Ha ha, see you here in 25 years! -

@Enterprisingwestern had i considered the problems with the kit before building i could have saved a bit of work. However, the effort has certainly eased LFM this end also!! -
Here are some pictures of a spontaneous modelling decision i took recently. I am sure i have seen this done here and before i knew it i was tearing off the door and bashing some new ones. The doors have a huge gap at the top and oversized hinges to enable an opening action. The roof is also too thick...oh and the decals don't look right to me. Due to slightly heavy handedness the kit doors were broken to new ones fashioned from plastikard. .3mm wire and fuse wire were used to create the locking mechanism. A new roof was made from .3mm plastikard with thin strips cut from the same material for the rainstrips. I also dabbled in a bit of Martin Welch inspired roof degradation. Happy but haven't quite got the great man's finesse! Decals and further weathering to follow. Cheers for now.

Improving a Triang-Hornby Mk1

Cheers @rodent279. The kit looks like it captures the character of the coach well. I have never actually seen one. The profile of the roof looks spot on and lacks the ribs that detracts from the Bachmann ones. Admittedly, the maroon one does look better but judge ye not, i have never attempted painting blue and grey!!! Trouble with over painting is you will see the ridge of the grey area. Save stripping it, a light sanding might help? Thanks for sharing rodent. It has certainly made me want to have a go. I am currently detailing some mainline mk1s with comet bits and bobs. If you finish yours by 2022 you will only have taken a quarter of a century!! Not too bad ;-) Cheers for now. Dave -

Wagon works for Templefield
westernviscount replied to westernviscount's topic in Kitbuilding & Scratchbuilding
So i found myself spontaneously pulling the roof and doors off my Dapol kitmaster meat van. So the issues with the kit are the gap at the top of the doors, the hinges that are designed to have the doors open, the thickness of the roof and on reflection the decals are not the best. So before i knew it i pulled the doors out, breaking them in the process!! So i scratched together a set of doors which rectify the gap problem. I've also added lanarkshire hose and hook and have also scratched a roof but am yet yo take a photo. Cheers for now -
Further down the work bench sits another project on the go. The lovely, cheap as chips mainline mk1 (my personal favourite mk1 model) Here i chiseled away the water filler pipes and replaced with .5mm brass wire. A .3mm brass wire support was glued next to the second step down to hold the pipe. I have some comet buffers and ganway ends to fit and i am going to try to fit some dart castings buckeye couplings in the dropped position but these might interfere with the couplings.

I fancy a go at one of these kits. Any pics you have would be most welcome Rodent. -
Ha ha ha, yes yes Mike i mis-spoke (tyoed) when saying filing! I actually use these... https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/modelcraft-extra-flexi-slim_line-sanders-3-pack/643084-1000?_br_psugg_q=sanding+tools I got them free from a woodworking magazine as it happens. cheers for now.

Cheers Johnster!! I have learned something regarding B1s and braking. Many thanks for that. I left the guards door closed because i could stomach sawing and splicing that section as well!! Chicken!! Lighting might be a good idea and agree it would have to be really weak to be authentic. A rake of mk1 with bright LED lighting never looks good! Cheers for now!
