  1. I would imagine, that unless retained separately, finding certificates 001, 002 etc will be painful.

I helped someone do that once, on a limited edition in the 1990’s of similar size, it took them ages, but he iirc everyone he checked before he shipped, but he didn't have them to hand when he got them, just a few pallets.

  2. Our company used to have friday afternoon drinks, but since lockdown its gone virtual, we have virtual friday afternoon drinks at “The Covid Arms”, one of marketing people even created a virtual pub sign for it

    I bet dealers loved that!!

They were usually offering 30% back in those days, and prices slowly rose as it sold out at the cheaper outlets.

I’m sure dealers are happy with current margins, but as a consumer I tend to buy less duplicates to renumber etc these days. I had no issues walking out with 2-3-4 of a loco knowing the value would at somepoint offset whatever screw up I did to it. Now i’ll buy 1 and just 1, but theres much more competition from other manufacturers to tease me into walking out with 2-3-4 locos, just different ones.

I couldn't see anywhere further back, is it something everyone gets or is it a raffle?

Its loose in  the brown outer delivery box, this is what your looking for (ive removed the discount code to not spoil the surprise).

Not that I am complaining but doesn't that just equate to what everyone else (more or less) charges for their products?

Has anybody still not had theirs dispatched yet? I know they have 3500 to go through, they haven't taken payment for mine yet (and it hasn't failed either it just says processing). I aren't in a rush I just want to be sure its not in limbo (something that happened with a rather large retailer in the past for me, where they only sent half my order and the other half was stuck in the system)

Mine was processing for 2 days at least, before shipping.

re:10% off, one thing I used to like when Hornby had the 15% discount for being a Hornby Club member, was that you were first in the queue for deliveries, I often had the models before the shop did.

So if theres a “must have” out there, the 10% could be a useful option, its only valid to end of the year though.

Likewise, mine arrived this morning. Even Mrs Jaymz is impressed (though does think the loco itself is ugly!)

I couldn't see anything about 10% off online purchases so maybe it's a luck of the draw thing, or maybe limited to early edition numbers, mine being number 1816.

Still, very happy it has arrived and I'm looking forward to giving it a test run before it goes into service!

    Cheers

    J

my 10% off was in the brown box, inbetween the wrapping paper and packing note, valid until Dec31st.

The visitor centre ticket and certificate are in the loco box.

59001-59004 went into service at the start of 1986, so they would be four years old and not two years old in 1990.

    Nice footage though!

    Guy

May 1986, they only arrived in January, and went to Derby first.

They were named in June 1986 at Merehead, iirc.

58050 came out a little later than its classmates, often suggested as bearing the fruits of various magnifying glasses at Derby a year earlier.

Quality seems to be a little hit and miss.

Half of mine were nice and sturdy, the other half may have been made from cooked spaghetti.

30 mins in the sun (not just in open air but direct warm sunlight) seemed to help a bit.

Becareful, sunlight can cause plastic to banana and warp, quite severely and in just a few seconds of the right exposure.

    Not to mention fading paint.

I don't disagree with you.  It isn't good.

Looking at the success of this model, I can see a range of die cast Dublo replicas.  Duchesses is various colours, followed by die cast A4 locos.  The only positive is that Hornby appear to have hit a winning formula for a high priced, high margin range.

There already is a diecast A4, made 3 years ago by Dapol.

  10. Its still like that today in Poland, just take a railway magazine, it will get you a guided tour of many depots, my tour at Bialystok included my own loco & driver  (an ET22) to drive me around the complex.
All i did was rock up with a camera, magazine and a smile.

Advice from a friend of mine, don’t buy the DJM version if you find one, because as the company is no longer in business, spares are near on impossible to get.  His is now a expensive model on a shelf <_<<_<<_<

They also fetch higher prices than Hornbys, due to rarity.

I seem to remember that they were painted in BR colours to throw off inquisitive journalists and “spy’s”.

    Railway enthusiasts make great spies.

They see through the minutest detail.

Slight aside, in the 1990’s  I was in Monino AFB (before it became an open museum, it required special written permission to visit). When I arrived, the guard inspected my passport, and that of my russian translator. They had a short dialog, and went in. I was quite the celebrity as at this point very few western europeans visited, and the base was still active. The translator said he inspected his passport as well as mine to check he was a Russian, I asked how did he know for sure. His reply was fake Russian passports from the west were easy to identify, as the staples dont rust. Btw his English was perfect, which is something Ive been told is a giveaway for kgb training, non-spies have dialects... I arrived by train from Hungary and left by plane for San Francisco and had interesting career at the time, so ive no doubts he, during the day, and the girls in the hotel who followed my every move at night, including knowing my room number and speaking english,  had other interests. Still they pandered to my bizarre personal requests, such as viewing various Moscow stations and airfields outside work, rather than just the tourist trail aroused sufficient interest.
The Hotel Intourist was a memory never to forget, I came home without my Bolton Wanderers shirt, it ended in a trade.

its a different world now i’m sure.

still its a detour away from Class 48’s, had I have known Kestrel was still intact at this time, I would have gone after seeing it too, missed opportunity there.

But just look at the other half:

    A pair of 50s

the 59 which spent a few years in Germany

    & an Ed.

You don't often see thing like those these days.

we've been spoilt round here recently, Tonbridge is home to a half-dozen + 73s anyone day at the moment, apart from 2 on NR duties, the rest seem to be kicking back the last few months.

But we also got the Rush Rail (Swedish import) class 66, and a new class 777 (which left with a “local” paint job after just one night) pass through.

Theres a good number of 37’s around the southern of late.

Returning to Eastleigh, if you can see it, theres some 142’s in there too.

Half of that is 66s, despite the refreshers packet colours .

Personally I wouldn’t want James to sully his memories of interesting railways with that dullness....

I used to say exactly the same about 47’s back in the day..

30 years on i’m glad I took my camera out, and in those days it cost real money to take photographs.

Almost no one would believe if I said, 40 years ago people would call this dullness too.. but seeing a dozen a day around Manchester area, they were pretty dull, until the scrapman came,

Wasn’t one test run over BR metals?  I seem to remember reading that one ran very late at night from Loughborough to Derby and back.  I also remember there was a lot of subterfuge with the batch due to sanctions against Cuba.

They were all test run, shunted by dhp1 too.

    Derby to Birmingham to Bristol

heres one with 0Z00 chalked on still in primer

I confess that the more I read here, the more I believe that the model railway show, along with any mass-participation event, in physical form, is dead and buried.

Its a good job Hornby didn't think like that in 1939 with 6231 Duchess of Atholl.

    Where would be today ?

Strangely enough we are not much further, 6231 is still metal, and about to be released in a crisis... indeed the plastic one came out not much after the Brexit vote, I therefore blame Hornby’s 6231 for Covid, each time they release this model, the world turns upside down.
