  1. I have studied the estimates my power company has given me and knowing that prices have risen the thing I fail to understand is why they always expect me to use about 15% more gas and electricity! My usage over the past ten years has remained constant so where do they get this non existent rise in usage? When I asked them that question I was informed that their system was very advanced and the technology rarely was wrong. When I pointed out that my usage had remained very similar for the last years they just repeated their rubbish about how good their technology was. Every year for the past ten years they have wanted to raise my direct debit in line with price and usage increases and every time I only raise it by the price increase percentage. Surprise, surprise my calculations are always more accurate and I always have a credit balance at the end of the winter when they come up with their next work of fiction. To anyone getting a demand for larger payment I would suggest you ignore their calculations and do them yourself you will not be sorry.

And another shot of Little Miss Unnamed.  I've come over all broody...

Miss Chief could be a good name for that bundle of mischief!

Good afternoon, David. That’s a splendid set of photo’s of the Bowes Railway, on the 27th May, 1991. In C15830, at Springwell, with Barclay, WST, that’s a superb rear three quarter portrait shot of the locomotive. It can also be seen that the screw coupling looks not to have been fully tightened up. I hope all was okay, and no undue snatching would take place.

I would agree with you but the buffer springs are fully compressed by the look of it which means the coupling is tightened correctly.

I am probably going blind but are there any ropes stopping Buccaneer from floating away on the tide?

It is,by reputation, the UK’s “second city “. Thus it is about time that it put Manchester et al. In their place. It’s getting there . It will take time and the ghost of Joseph Chamberlain to shake it up a bit.

My father came from Birmingham and my mother from Manchester. She was convinced that Manchester was the second city of the UK and they "discussed" it regularly until as a kid I pointed out that at least there was no argument that I was born in the FIRST city. I don't think either was very keen on being told that!

  7. Be careful if you think that preservation carriage lighting is a good guide to what was the norm pre 1965.

I have regularly worked the Mid Hants Railway Real Ale Train over the last 20 years and due to problems with the batteries not recharging enough LED bulbs were fitted. They don't drain the batteries as quickly which means there is light at the end of the evening and they provide a brighter light throughout the evening. So a win win situation for railway and passengers but not actually how things were in days gone by.

The other thing is that on a bright summer evening if you walk down the platform you can't tell if the lights are on or off which is the main reason why I don't bother with lights in my model coaches.

    Hi,

An air industry quip is 'how do you make a small fortune in the air business? - start with a large fortune and buy an airline'.

    Regards

    Nik

Freddie Laker would agree with that.

Not forgetting the scratching of the table - from all the track pins that have extended through the track and thin baseboard!

My father carefully pinned the track on my LoneStar 000 Electric layout to a board which was kept behind the settee and put on the dining room table for operating sessions. This all worked well until one Saturday I woke up early and set the railway up by myself. My parents were impressed by how quietly I done it but when my father removed the layout for breakfast there were a number of large scratches on the table! The table was a high quality one that had been given to my parents as a wedding present and they were very upset although they said they did not blame me.
