I don't think passengers travelled in their own carriage after the very early years. Taking one's carriage with one, and one's horses, was usual for the nobility for many years.

Taking one's horseless carriage with one (or more usually, the whole family) was not unusual for the better-off lower classes until as recently as 1995...at least within the UK.

One interesting thing is that usually, when something like this gets sold out, and is still really popular and in demand (eg Hornby QE2 loco in purple), examples appear on eBay, often at highly inflated prices.

But unless I'm missing something, I cant see any Hattons Genesis coaches on there.

There was a rake of six lit coaches on there last week - sold for £328. I bet the buyer is kicking themself now...

I wonder if the original consignment somehow became divided and the remainder have just turned up?

Well you'd like to think Hattons knew how many they had ordered to be made, and then closed the pre-order books for each model as it became 'sold out', rather than just continue taking orders they knew they could not fulfil. But there does appear to have been a bit of a c**k up numbers-wise somewhere along the line.

I agree - but instead of the pack I went for a more varied set of 5 - yes cost more but pleased to be able the enjoy these gems after the scare of the order cancel.

I re-ordered the pack as I originally wanted the tri-composite and both the 4-wheel and 6-wheel brake 3rds. I already have a good selection of the rest, but as I wanted these three, I felt another 4-wheel 3rd won't hurt...

.. For me - one of the most unusual thing about this is that my original order included one of the GWR Boxed sets - which they 'Now' seem to have plenty of 🤨

Same here - once I got the original email advising the pack was going to be removed from my order, I quickly ordered individual coaches, from what was still available at the time, to try to make up the shortfall, though not all were available, only two types. Now I've re-ordered the pack, I'll have two more than I originally ordered. Not unhappy though, as they are really so very nice...

    Glad to hear it.

I wonder whether these are really a large number of cancellations - or has there been a hasty rerun by the factory?

I find it hard to believe that they have had enough cancellations on these (and not say on the LMS ones, still sold out on pre-order) from individuals perhaps they've found an admin error somewhere?

Yes, there does seem to be a very large number available (it was 10+ for all types, I think, when I first looked, but some numbers have now dropped below 10 or are now OOS).

Like you, I can't believe they've had this many cancellations. Maybe some pre-ordered and have had a card number change, not updated their account, and then not responded to Hattons, or some pre-orderers are now modelling in another world so obviously didn't respond...but I doubt there's all that many.

  7. For those who had their pre-orders (or part thereof) for GWR coaches cancelled by Hattons (or waited until they were released but then missed the boat), due to customer(?) cancellations a number have now become available - well, it looks to me like ALL versions are available, including the 4-coach packs. Prices for those that had pre-orders cancelled will be honoured. I've just re-ordered a 4-coach pack...

Yes, Hattons will receive the spares with the last issue of coaches early next year and I received helpful instructions for reassembling the end steps. I've requested some spare steps and will refit the errant pair using patience, glue and the big stand magnifier, hopefully avoiding the dread of pinging small parts across the room to that big black hole!

Obviously the spares availability is subject to assembly of the remaining stock, but I hope you can achieve a satisfactory conclusion.

Do you know who dealt with your issue? I might get a better response from them. All it is is one wheel not having the Mansell insert - looks odd.

Hmm, just as wet here Neal, as I ask Hattons for spare Genesis coach end steps and continue running in a long line of locomotives. Just finished the Hornby Prairie and about to do the Dapol next.

    Stay warm and dry.

Have you had a satisfactory response yet from Hattons? I have a small issue with one coach (of eleven) - a small part missing when assembled - and was merely offered a refund or replacement (but replace with what, as they are sold out...?). They apparently don't appear to have any gash ones to cannibalise either.

It appears the latest round of order customer cancellation emails now advise:

"There was a miscalculation and miscommunication in regard to the number of pre-orders that we have placed with the factory and I am afraid that we are having to reduce the quantity of this coach, on your order..."

Which livery(s), and which coach type was that?

  11. These really are absolutely fantastic, and a bargain, IMO!

I'd only seen the Hornby ones on here, YouTube and in their oversize boxes in the shops, and wasn't overly impressed with them. Hattons did such a good job of keeping us updated with their own videos and releasing pre-production samples for review, plus having double footboards fitted as standard, I went ahead and pre-ordered several GWR 6-wheelers and a similar number of 4-wheelers.

One nice touch is the addition of extra footboards, so that you can convert from the fitted double footboards to a single footboard, as many of this sort of coach would have had in later life. Unfortunately there is no mention of this on the instruction leaflet! On said leaflet there are instructions on how to remove the centre sliding wheelset and axleboxes on the 6-wheelers, thus creating a long-wheelbase 4-wheeler. However, as the lower footboards have a gap in the centre (to allow clearance for these axleboxes on curves), the lower footboard would then look a bit odd, so they would look better if replaced with just the single footboard (But mine are staying as 6-wheelers with their double footboards!).

So many years ago that the 81 was a half-hourly (and at times just hourly) single-deck route run by MBs from Hounslow (AV) garage.  The daily service is now every 10 - 15 minutes and it's been a double-deck route for a very long time just as it was when first introduced.

I don't think MBs ever normally worked the 81 (we certainly had them when new on the 110 for a short while, before having MBSs on both the 110 and 111). After the RMs, the 81 had SMs then SMSs for several years before LSs took over for a longer period.

That figure made me sit up too, wondering how many milk churns 22,000 tons of milk would be.  Perhaps an update to the voice over may be needed.  I'm 99% sure I've heard the odd word re-voiced on other railway programs.  When there are so many facts a figures to get right I'm not surprised if the odd error slips through.

I had to replay it a couple of times as I thought I'd misheard it the first time! I too was trying to imagine 22,000-tons worth of milk churns...

After looking up the capacity of churns, I think I've worked it out somewhere near right, and it works out at approx 290,000 (41.5 thousand per day) of the old-type 17 gallon conical churns, or approx 492,000 (70.3 thousand per day) of the later straight 10 gallon churns. Cue a voice-over re-edit...
