  1. Is the unit number readable on the original image? Just wondering if it says 7739, IIRC one DTC of this unit remained 'spare' after the formation of the 8VAB unit (from the majority of vehicles from 7739/7741/7742)

There were 3xTSO and 2xDTC left spare but by 1969, 2xTSO and 1xDTC had been used to replace vehicles in other sets.(source R.O. Nov.1969). If I've read it correctly, then this may be DTC 76370.

I haven't got the original print unfortunately but I think the VEP vehicle is very likely to be a spare from the 8 VAB donations as stated.

Another possibility though is that it may have been the undamaged DTC from unit 7714 which was involved in the crash that occurred at this location in July 1971 which I think became spare for a while until 7714 was ultimately reformed

  2. post-21587-0-53392700-1462218152_thumb.jpgA rarity from the Southern here.

Southern EMUs rarely contained vehicles within a set in different liveries as the fixed formations of sets meant they would tend to go through works and every vehicle would be repainted at the same time ( although there were a few exceptions over the years).

So this shot is rare from that perspective but also in that it shows the rare combination of a 4 VEP motor coach (in blue) coupled to what appears to be a trio of 4CIG coaches in blue and grey.

The unusual headboard (presumably indicating that it is a test train) and the unusual headcode (34) adds to the mystery.

If you ran this on a layout then you would attract howls of disbelief!

The picture was taken at Surbiton around 1971/2

  3. The description says "Made out of tin, very well done. Wonderful details, the flying Scotsman as it was."

Well if that is the Flying Scotsman 'as it was' then no wonder they had to spend £4M on it to bring it back up to scratch!

  4. Without wanting to pour scorn on the Surbiton - Okehampton GUV model - am I right in thinking this is effectively the standard Bachmann GUV model but with one of the distinctive train nameboards attached to each side. If so then the £11 supplement for simply adding the name boards would seem somewhat excessive.

If it is a completely new model on the basis that the hinged ends on these vehicles were different than those on the standard GUV then I stand corrected.

I would like to run a model of the full train but if I go ahead and buy say 7 of these then that is going to cost a considerable amount more than simply buying 7 standard green GUVs

  5. 2 Hornby (OR Lima?) HST Power Coaches, cabs cut off, surggically joined!

The "Guards" rear window becomes the drivers window I suppose! Clever! ;)

(Yes, I know that the Guard would be upset by the noise from the Paxman Valenta engine, so he was moved into a modified MK3 coach..... ;) )

I think the guard might also be upset with the fact that with a Paxman engine at each end - where would he actually store the parcels and how will he get them in or out?

    "NOT Bachmann"

How unusually, Normal it is "NOT Hornby Heljan VITRAINS LIMA" (for a Bachmann train).

As Hornby is really the common search brand I don't really see "NOT Bachmann" will increase impressions as much as I think a lot of the people who search Bachmann will usually also search Hornby unless searching for a specific train.

I had leant to accept Bachmann train stating the above mentioned but rarely see a not on a Hornby product.

Looks like a nice train though ;) I'm awaiting the TTS Hornby 60, I wonder if this will affect the price of the expensive DCC Sound fitted 60s...

Edit: Turns out "Not Bachmann" is a bit more common than I thought: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=Bachmann&_sop=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X%22NOT+Bachmann%22.TRS0&_nkw=%22NOT+Bachmann%22&_sacat=0

I don't know if I am missing something here but why would you actually bother to list an item by stating what it isn't?

It's like trying to sell a Ford car and stating that it is not a Rover nor is it a Toyota - bleedin' obvious or what?

Surely the only real reason to use the word 'not' in a model loco advert is if it is 'not' in working order or if it is  'not' in good condition!

  7. I like the look of these new ones from Bachmann - it's brand new and unused I am but not sure if it comes in it's box?

I'm going to buy two of these but I am worried that the back to back spacing - it look a bit out for OO gauge - might be gauge 1

I know the wife will say 'what have you bought another one of these for - you've already got plenty of them'? Maybe if I keep it in my stock box she won't notice

  8. Sainsbury's Bag For Life?

I've got an early one that used to say HATTONS MODEL RAILWAYS - a real collectors item!

Must be worth a fortune though - the only problem is that unfortunately over the years all the letters apart from those which are underlined above appear to have faded away. Will that effect it's value?

  9. I'm sure we've had this seller on here before, but what on earth is this??????? :O

There are quite a few other gems too.....  Unfortunate GBL and Kitmaster offerings.

I liked  the heavily encrusted (those seagulls again?) 'Schools' resting (in the centre of the well, on one axle and on a cross member) on a Triang WELTROL. The poor thing would have collapsed under the weight.

I do love the way that the guy who sells these proudly confirms that each one is 'finished in a protective coat of matt lacquer'! After all you wouldn't want to buy one and find that his unique hand crafted effect had been damaged in the post!!

Interesting that he uses the word 'lacquered' as opposed to 'varnished' - mind you when you look at the stuff he creates I think it is safe to say that they do look well and truly knack lacquered!

  10. A rather strange and unusual choice of livery - not sure what it is meant to represent.

However, that said, whoever has done has done this has actually done a relatively good paint job to a reasonable standard which compares well with some of the dreadful repaints, weathered catastrophes and scrapyard disasters that appear on these pages each week!

An unusual thing to do but somebody seems to have taken their time over it - for whatever reason.

  11. Maker unknown? well, Bachmann or Great British Locomotives Collection (Amercom partwork)?

Personally, I would have to lean towards GBL! ;)

I do hope it is a GBL product and that somebody has not done this to one of the Bachmann models.

  12. It 's a 10 ton sheep wagon - that's one hell of a big sheep!
