Why are cupcakes so called, despite the fact that if they were baked in a cup they would be a meal in themselves?

I believe that it goes back to the era of the Roman occupation of these islands, when sausages were in short supply and the legionnaires only had metal 'cupae' in which to prepare their meals. This was always done standing up, as the average legionnaire didn't know how to sit down, they didn't teach it in schools back then, you see.
