  1. Mick, I know you run as up to date as possible, but..... https://www.flickr.com/photos/mike_sargent/6305568067/ You needn't have converted the wagons, don't know how many they had like this, but the first wagon in this pic is just a standard cargowaggon....I think..... (I'll have a look soon for the date Jim) Jack.
  2. Just had a notification to say I have replied to one of my followed topics!...it's gone now....

  3. Cheers Nigel, It was a possibility but there wasn't enough space either side, so I lit it from underneath with some 3mm LEDs with hole punched plasticard on top... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/82745-tighte-end-yard-how-i-construct-turnouts/?p=1466577 Jack.
  4. Morning Track laying is now complete, and I have begun wiring it up, but even though it's so small I still suspect it will be like spaghetti! A few pics to show this.... Jack.
  5. Thanks Nick, There is space in the flask wagon if you undo the underframe...two screws under the bogies and two either side of the middle section. Be aware though, as mine were rather tight and I managed to b*gger up the screw head! and had to cut around it... There is space where the weights go...I used a Black Cat Tech flasher (no connection), and it's a little slow but is small enough to fit. You can pick them up for a fiver on eBay. Jack
  6. Hi, Quick 'genny' update... The cant rail lines have been painted (masking tape and orange paint ), and the connectors and handrails have too... I've also just added steps on the fuel tanks made from strips of thin plasticard: Ta, Jack.
  7. Mick, I couldn't make it to DEMU, even after much bartering of Dad.... Yesterday I found a video of the first 56 hauled log train I saw, and it was interesting because: a ) I think Big Jim was driving, and he gave it some welly accelerating! b ) The driver had propped up the window with a piece of wood or something...but the reason of my post: c ) It only had 4 wagons...so you needn't have made a train of 9 after all! I don't have any idea why it had only 4, but it would make an interesting formation if the rest of your rake were having a scheduled exam at Deadman's Lane WRD (Wagon Repair Depot) Jack.
  8. Evenings, Progress update.... Track laying is happening.....slowly but surely Just a pic to show this Jack.
  9. Right....this is going to be a very picture-heavy update, so please bear with me!... How I construct 00 scale turnouts. Firstly, I have many sheets of paper with little lines on them to denote where the sleepers go, but I made them by measuring the sleeper width, then a prototypical gap, then another sleeper etc., and I found this very time consuming, so photocopied loads! Then I drew a rough plan for the frog and splice rails, as they are in the middle. The outer rails will be added in with a roller gauge to make them as accurate as possible. Onto the sheet are stuck some C&L Copper Clad sleepers, cut to length... Then start with the hardest bit...the crossing vee! To do this, I file a piece of rail down in a clamp to be the frog. It needs to vaguely be the right angle, but not perfect because we're going to fill it with solder! Do this for two pieces, then solder them to the sleepers in the middle, at the top... Then I add the other rails near the frog. This must be correct or else the whole turnout won't work properly if they aren't aligned. On the roller gauge there are two sets of 'flanges', the inner ones are used to gauge the distance away from the frog of the other rails. I have a habit of cleaning (fine wet and dry), and testing (spare coach bogie), each stage of the process to see if it is right. Next I add the splice rails. The straight one must be dead straight, and the curved one follows the curve of the sleepers closely. These are filed at the end to a tapered point...but only solder them part way down to achieve a spring action... Next, the stock rails are added. You can file a notch into these to accept the splice rail, but I put a kink in it instead: Then solder it up, using the roller gauge to check it against the splice rail. Do the same with the curved one, again always checking it with the gauge. Next we add the check rails. People underestimate their importance, but you need to get them right, or else your train will derail in the crossing vee... Now...for the tie bar I just use a piece of copper clad sleeper, but different people have their own way: Then slice the middle of the sleepers like so with a cutting disc in a mini drill... And test with the continuity tester on a multimeter...if it's '1', then there is no short, but if it is any less, there is a short somewhere (normally one of the sleepers hasn't been cut properly): And that's it! To install it, drill a hole in the baseboard dia. 5mm ish... Then cut a slot in a piece of plastikard to fit over the hole, and nail it in place with a track pin or two...don't glue because you could clog up the slot etc.... Many thanks for reading it all, I hope I have given someone encouragement to go build one... I hope the pictures described it better than me! Jack.
  10. Hi, The turnout is nearly finished, so I'll upload a step-by-step guide this weekend on how I build them. It may not be the right way, but it's how I do it! The shed and 'pit are looking nice, but they're not connected to anything! And this is all the track layed ATM, under the bottles is the second turnout... All the track is/will be glued down with the wood glue in the pic. Nothing will be done this weekend, and progress will be slower from here, but I've been encouraged to do some more, so there will be steady progress. Thanks, Jack
  11. Haha thanks Nick, If you look closely, there is a piece of cling film between the books (a trick learnt from a Mr. Newbryford), so the books don't get stuck...and I do fancy having a go at an RHTT, but I haven't a penny spare... All the cork is glued down now, but I've just decided to add another point...if anyone wants I will do a step-by-step on how I do it...? Jack.
  12. Thanks Mick, I am planning to, but I a) can't get to the model shop for a while, b ) don't have any money, and c) the project will soon stall because I cannot swap anyone for some B4 bogies, and I can't buy them 'cause I'm skint... So that's the situation, but yes I will use the clapboard. My attention has now turned to my layout come diorama, Tighte End Yard (link in my sig.) TFN, Jack.
  13. Hi, I've finished the coach ends with handrails (plastic coated wire) and electrical connectors. These were made from plastic tube and the insulation off some wires. They have been glued under the covers with some square section, and linked with elastic... Thanks, Jack.
  14. Hi, Thanks again everyone for the encouragement I need. Since I'm now on holiday, I can do some more....and to prove I'm doing something... The point work may get laid this week, but the cork is the main problem, so that'll be done by the end of this week. Jack.
  15. After much filling...filing...priming...both sides are finished in terms of prepping, next ill spray them up and do the decals...when I buy them! They are as close to perfect as I'm gonna get. After spraying the roof with Humbrol grey primer, I compared it to photos, and it's almost a perfect match! So I'll add the roof vents and exhaust pipe, and leave it at that. I've put a classified ad in to swap anyone who has B4 bogies...and I really need them. Anyone got any to swap? Jack.
  16. ...is very happy! I've clocked 1000 miles on my bike, and went to see the flasks...and saw 37423 in its new colours!

all that cycling means less modelling time lol, congrats on 1k distance and did you get pic of 423?

Cheers Ken, yeah I got a video of the growler, I'll take stills and put them in my thread hopefully tomorrow.

  17. Oh dear.................you've got some left.............another batch!? Seriously, great work (as usual), I bet you're sick of resin.....white metal......blue paint.....orange lines...... Jack. (I would purchase some but I'm skint )
  18. Morning, Side one is now finished work wise...into the paint shop next! I've added handrails made of wire and superglued them behind to replace the moulded ones... One more coat of White and that'll be it! Side two has had the first coat of primer, and the second fill is currently drying. Jack.
  19. Lee, Pete is probably right, but it reminds me of a Peter Clarke kits one I saw recently... http://www.peterclarkkits.com/smoke-units--lighting-kits.html Jack
  20. As promised, a progression of pics showing the filling/filing process....First rough fill, lots of air holes, some cracks where it has shrunk, and some imperfections... Second fill, still some air holes and some minor blemishes... Last fill...nearly perfect, a couple of imperfections in the paint (sanded bits), and you can see the filled bits because the paint was thin...I would have applied another, but rain stopped play I have smoothed down the ends.... In readiness for the rain covers for the electrical cables, made from tube plastikard... Finally, the underframe and battery boxes/fuel tanks have been painted black. That's it for tonight, more tomorrow! Jack.
  21. Jaz, I started filing 2mm 'lighthouse' LEDs down to fit in the hole, but made a mess of it so I've left it for now, but yes I will. The 'Glue 'n' Glaze' glue is useful once finished to fill in any gaps between the LED and the hole, so yeah I'll utilise that too. Thanks, Jack. (Pics of the finished side later, just gonna apply the final coat before the sun goes to bed)
  22. Morning, I've started a half term project, to convert a BG into a network rail yellow example, 6263, just like a certain yellow wizard did... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/53157-newbryfords-mostly-yellow-workbench/?p=634570 To do this I've had to fill and file the roof, taking out the periscope blanking plates and handrail holes... I've also roughly filled two sets of doors and windows because I'm modelling it in its later appearance, and I'll sand them down after. Finally, I've made new fuel tanks/ battery boxes out of plastikard, and added the strapping with strips of thinner stuff... Thanks, Jack.
  23. I did a while ago.... They're ok considering I did them when I was younger and much less experienced.... I cocked up the paint though, but these are destined for either revival someday...or the bin! Jack.
  24. Looking good Nick, I know you've probably seen my pics on Mr Bryan's thread, but here's my post... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/53157-newbryfords-mostly-yellow-workbench/?p=1452173 Jack.
