  2. How would they simulate the sound of a BG? With a couple of 2-6-0s ? But there would only be one blastpipe - and what about the automatic stoker? I'm contemplating my 'heavily weathered' 47796 and wondering about: 1 How to tackle the shiny handrails and motion and reduce it to the look of the only one I ever saw in real life (while camping at Shireoaks near the western portal of Cowburn tunnel with my 'Peewit' Scout patrol). 2 Fitting a sound chip dh (edit of typo)
  3. I love this thread - cos it's where we used to go courting on the way back to Lower Mosley Street bus station and the NWRCC 27 Buxton bus after going to the pics in Oxford Road.   4. A promising thread to happen across. It sparks my interest because I have an eclectic collection of traction and rolling stock amassed over the decades (that I have converted to DCC operation) which runs on H0/ 00 track . My solution to the scale discrepancy is to deliberately play down 'realistic' scenery, instead opting for a minimalist setting so that elements such as stations are expressed as wood block outlines that can be 'imagined' in relation to whether the stock I've chosen to run on the layout is within a British railway environment (BR or earlier Big Four or Pre Grouping) or French, FS or Eastern European/ Turkish. I am planning two 'modular' extensions to my 'anywheresville' continuous run circuit: 1 is a helix that I can sit inside and experience the trains climbing and descending around my club armchair 2 Is an accurately semaphore signalled small station and yard that I can operate on the absolute block system. I don't know whether this has any relevance to the posts already appearing on this thread other than re-inforcing an overall spec for maintaining an 'open' and 'loose fit' modular approach. dh
  5. P1130254(1).JPG This particular pic looks like Jukebox's Taipei build (with an 'iron horse' prominent) Some good looking use of jigs etc. in the rebuild. I note the original rivetted canopy from that infamous 'Geordie Sweatshop' is still in use. Did you notice those very same rivets on the cover of Backtrack a month or so back? Featuring a C class at the head of a passenger train, DP looked barely recognisable - except for them rivets!
  6. With your graffiti you would definitely have been awarded a First Class on my Fine Art degree course. Graffiti has been all the rage for a few years now - but only for the men. Geordie girls seemed to prefer sewing together little tents in the studio then sitting in them and decorating their bodies...... Funny old business 'taste'
  7. Yup, bouncing free, and thanks for remarking on my return. Degree course finally behind me, graduate in the Stadium of Light Monday afternoon. Academic dress kit seriously expensive to hire, so I've improvised my own for a tenner - putting the dosh saved towards a SECR lined C Class which arrived this morning. So the sweetest little darling only effectively cost £45!

But here's a silly idea: With your modelling skills, could you fabricate a frame to sit over the front of the camera so that it appears we are sitting in the front compartment of one of the original Derby Lightweight DMUs? It was one of the really great experiences over that magnificent Midland mainline (and also the LNW line from Buxton down to Stockport) I can remember from the mid 1950s. dh

It is so wonderful to be able to drop in on RMWeb and look over master modellers' shoulders at such work - there seems to be a fair concentration of RMWeb modellers working on the Midland through the Peak. I loved that comparison shot of the model and its new cornice with the b+w view (with a Singer roadster like my 'uncle' drove in string back gloves). I assume Bakewell to be another Paxton station. Will you be able to reproduce something of the chiarascuro effect that is evident with that deep overhang on Italianate buildings using Derbyshire millstone? Best wishes davehig
  12. Were I involved in this project, I think I'd lobby for a bit of JMW Turner's artists' licence with the Peak landscape. Why not feature Chapel Milton's specacular viaducts and Chinley South junction just past the down starter signal? And just across the line from the station a corner of Ferodo's asbestos works. The Le Mans winning Jaguars were often being tested there in the early 1950s. daveh

  16. IMHO that inspirational original shunting plank has got itself a bit larded up over the months and years. I always admired it sitting on the window ledge like a garden railway. Looking at those pics above I compared the plain wall version (post 77) with the wrap around back scene (post 80) - yer wastin yer sweat lad. "Less is more" said Mrs Mies van der Moore. Went for a ride in SWMBO's MX7 today (she's done just over a 1000 miles in it in less than 4 years!) and got a nasty cold shower from all the icy condensate water dripping off the inside of the hood down my neck - same wintry prob I think....lack of davehig

Two items appeared on my radar about HS2 1 Mention above of Nottingham: a couple of issues of Private Eye ago, 'piloti' (Gavin Stamp) wrote of a group lobbying to redevelop the Victoria mall in Nottingham to guess what? Shops over a train station on the High Speed line! 2 The 'about turn' in Labour's economic policy may announced by Ed Balls could mean they antipate cancelling HS2 to fund other public sector committments should they return to power (BBC Newsnight commentators). davehig

  20. A newcomer to RMweb I'm completely blown away by this thread. It brings a lump to my throat, an uncanny throw back to the days when "our" mill town in the hills had a both a Midland/GCR station and a North Western station, with a whole lot of exotica coming and going out of both during Wakes Week . Plus long lines of North Western and Majestic charas parked outside the Industrial and Equitable Co-operative shops all down Albion Street hoping to undercut BR's away-day excursion fares to Blackpool. The detailed observation of those characteristic gritstone terraces on slopes with both the stepped and the continuous sloping roof ridge lines is superb. Just a decade later and all those salesmen of double-glazed replacement windows together with B&Q's shade cards for masonry paint will have totally changed the scene. davehig
