  1. I just found this thread linked from a 12 page thread on a 4mm QS but what intrigues me is how did loco hauled non push pull train locos run round, was there a pilot? was everything dragged up and down to Cowlairs?

Most of the time a new loco dropped onto the rear of the stock either to take the ECS to Cowlairs or to form an outward working which, for many years until the early 80's, was assisted by the inbound loco up the Cowlairs incline. There have not been run round facilities at QS for years, certainly since the late 70's and if they ever existed I am ignorant of the fact.

  2. I don't think that I have added these photos taken by Dad in the mid-eighties

Great historical pictures, this one in particular interests me. I have in my record of west highland information that Morrisons store commenced construction in 1982. Given this is 1985 with no sign of the store I suspect my information is incorrect. Can anyone shed any clarity on when Morrisons was built?

  3. Since I was at Edinburgh University 1980 to 1986 allegedly studying medicine there may be a few images lurking about?

The selection here includes 37 crossing at Ardlui (feeling was an SRPS tour to Mallaig), 246 Morayshire on Santa Trips round Suburban in Edinburgh? and Green Arrow and Evening Star double heading a rail tour at Saughton Junction  (Jenners Depository behind photographer)

Then 2 signal boxes that  have lost since gone. Kingsknowe and Kirknewton

I have just spent the last few hours drooling over the variety of pictures contained in this thread. Please keep them coming.

On a point of detail, it seems clear to me that DOCJACOB enjoyed his student days as appears to struggle to recall his time on the West Highland line!. I say this as I am pretty certain that the 37 is at Garelochead heading south and not Ardlui.

  4. Does anyone remember this?

It used to feature in the 1990s on one of the music channels.

The music was Beethoven and the video was scenes of class 26s and 27s in the snow on the West Highland line in the 1980s.

    Fantastic video and music.

From what I could see I reckon that the time is late 70's rather than early 80's given the use of 27's and buffet cars. Both had disappeared by the 80's.

  5. Hornby class 50 oval buffers are an excellent replacement for locos without buffer beam skirts. The modelling section of Rail Express July 2015 has an article on Tinsley volcanos which references the Hornby option. I have used them on several of my 37's to replace the factory fitted round buffers and am very happy with the result. Usually they can be found on Ebay although I could not find any when I searched earlier today.

I am also interested in replacing the circular buffers with something more robust.

    regards Rob
