  1. Had a save journey home, arriving at 9.30 PM unpacked the van and brought it back to the rental company. After an eight hours drive I went to bed early. Wish to thank all for the visit and chats and it is good to meet people in person. Robin, thanks for the great pictures ! John, it was a pleasure to meet ! Simon, sometimes family is more important as trains, I have been asked to bring the layout over to the UK more times, so I think it will not stick to a performance once. Vecchio, although I'm personaly more into US modeling the next 2 layouts will be german themed, One large layout in H0 and a smaller in 0 scale, inbetween there are a couple of modules for the Cardigan Bay Coastal to be finished and I also gonna take them on the road. Hope you all enjoyed the show and see you next time ! Grtz Martin
  2. Thanks guys, bit at rest now at the Premier Inn at Coldfield. Enjoyed the show and all the compliments I have got on the layout. Feel free to post pictures !! Gonna catch some sleep before the long drive home. It was really pleasant to meet and greet a couple of forum members and have a chat with them. Hope to be back with a new layout in 2018..
  3. More and more pilings added to the wharf of Mara Harbor, minor details added between the layers of paint drying..
  4. Thanks !! Got a little work done on the layout, needed a bunch of signs and so. Added some painted signs and metal ones. The metal ones just ordinary pieces of printed papers rusted with various acrylic colors and pigment. For the painted sign I used a self adhesive paper sticker sheet. Printed and cut out as a mask. Airbrushed the color on. Worked pretty good for me but maybe I use some of this washable acrylics to fade them the next time..
  5. Reworked the retaining walls, spraypainted with an airbrush and Ammo acrylics, just light coats. Glued the pilings in place and shot some pictures so you get an idea of the final scene in this corner. Think I'll add some additional enamel weathering tommorow..
  6. Thanks !!! Hope you will come along for a chat to, I'm a little ugly guy Spend almost this entire Sunday painting pilings, more additions to the wharf. To speed up the proces it's acrylics only today..Inbetween I shot around 17 pictures of every step to write a SBS. Let them dry now for a day to add more weathering with enamels. from this.. to this in a day.. and a bunch more..
  7. Thanks, and you're right Jeff, most buildings are still removable as they are a work in progress. When done they will be worked in..
  8. Leaving for the Warley show in Birmingham in 3 weeks I still have some unfinished things, Working on some detail thingies, figure painting and some additional weathering of the buildings. Can't say for shure I will be completely finished but it starts to look ok to me..
  9. A pin wash is enhancing detail by adding a darker wash around it. Rivets, panel lines and so on. With a fine tipped brush you add the wash around them.. I like this video for explaination..
  10. Hi Simon, yes just 6 words for now. Work on a how to photoshoot and video. And in testing it's more that I like to test the products before marketing them..
  11. Working a bit on greens today, testing the new flowering tufts, tufts with weeds and a couple of other things. Funny what color can do..
  12. More rusting roofs. On this lazy Sunday inbetween some footbal matches and the Formula 1, pity Max didn't finish, I worked a bit on the rusted roof of one of the biggest warehouses in Mara Harbor. After the 2 tone primer coats I started with this so called mapping technique using a couple of Ammo by Mig rust tones. Dark rust, medium rust and light rust. Mapping whats that would a couple of non military modelers ask. Well it's very thin acrylic paint added in irregular abtract paterns in several colors. Finished it of with the splatter technique using a flat brush and a toothpick. After a short drying time I added some light coats of Ammo by Mig scratches effects followed by a light grey base from the same brand. I wanted some contrast between the rust and the original roof color. After a short drying time I started working on the surface with a flat brush and tap water. Let it dry now for a day before adding some coats with rusty enamel tones, dust and other dirt.
  13. Inbetween modelrailroadshows, production and other things still manage to work a bit on Mara Harbor. Need some things finished before I leave for Birmingham UK with the layout. So started on the roof of this build. Styrene with cartboard underneat and some .5 x.75 Evergreen strips glued on. After masking the I airbrushed a first layer of tracksprimer followed by a lighter rust primer from Ammo by Mig in irregular patterns to represent a base layer of rust. Let it dry now for at least 24 hours to think about the next steps. With removing the masking tape I took some parts of the paint on the windows with it. They where my first job ever in styrene and I have some adherance issues. Hopefully they are soved now, cleaned the styrene before the paintjob with 98% alcohol.
  14. Enjoyed a trainshow in Belgium last weekend, De 8e Grote Modelspoorexpo 2016 at Leuven was a big succes with good layouts. Enjoyed the 2 days working on some cars and showing my weathering techniques presenting the products of Ammo by Mig to these train guys. Specialy the enamel washes are quit unknown to them and most spectators where stunned by the use and how easy they are to work with. For the rest no pictures but I did receive some Belgian diesels from a forum member to weather. Planning some nice photo shoots and some articles around them. Searching for some good prototype pictures right now..
  15. Ughe ughe ughe, needs some dusting here... Started on some additional weathering of one of the buildings on Mara Harbor. Couple of Ammo streaking grimes used. Still think I can do more and add more grain or something..Still a couple of weeks to go before the Birmingham show..
  16. For budget quality I recommend Sparmax airbrushes, good quality for the money. But in your price range I would check on Harder & Steenbeck Evolution. Nice airbrush and real easy to clean.. https://www.air-craft.net/acatalog/Harder-Steenbeck-Airbrushes.html this site is just for showing what they have, also the Ultra is a pretty neat airbrush..
  17. If you have an airbrush try AK interactive ultra matte varnish. This stuff is really dead..
  18. Couple of quick shots of the B&O boxcar. Worked my way around with the rust washes and added dust with pigments and Ammo nature effects light dust. Pigments added with a brush, sealed with pigment fixer with an airbrush in several layers. Light dust sprayed on in a light coat with the airbrush and faded and stroked with a brush moistened in odourles thinner..Quit for a couple of days now I think.
  19. Thanks !! Fades, chipping, washes and rust..all Ammo by Mig stuff. Not done yet..1:87 scale..
  20. Kesselwagen..teaser for the Expo at Leuven Belgium
  21. Sneak peek for an article in the Dutch magazine Railhobby..
  22. Traveled to a show in Hochdorf Switserland this weekend for some demonstrations of weathering techniques. As always I did have the problem what to bring and what to show so I ended up with 4 crates of material and 2 crates of rolling stock. My friend and Team Mitropa mate Erik Wieringa arrived after a 1,5 hour drive at my place where we enjoyed a coffee, packed the car and left at 8.30 AM. After a long drive we arrived at Hochdorf at 6.30 PM where we set up our gear for a 2 day show. The first day I did some fading on boxcars, added some oil paints on the German Gmhs 53 and started on the tank of the Lenz kesselwagen. Gave it a light fade with a light grey wash and some dark faded rust on the top with Ammo tracksprimer so I could get started on chipping the next day. With a lot of questions of the audience you never get as much work done as you wish, but hey that´s what you´re there for. Think I got the chipping done at the end of the day, started with a light grey color and finished over that with a Ammo chipping rust color. With the show closing at 4 PM and packed at 6.30 PM we decided to drive home. Leaving at 6 PM we finally arrived at my place ar 2.15 AM where we unpacked my stuff and Erik went home for another 1.5 hours. Respect mate !
  23. Thanks guys ! The contrast is indeed a bit overdone Mick, but I'm working on it. Phil, I don't thin the oils when I put them on. Most of the times. Just put smal dots and stripes on the cars with a toothpick or a 0/10 brush. When thinned I use odourless thinners, Ammo, AK, or just Winsor and Newton or any artist brand. The are a lot softer and more pure as the DIY store ones..more expencive to, but a ruïnd model isn't worth the use of cheap materials IMO.. Again a bit of work done on the German boxcar in scale 1, drying times are a modelers worse enemy !! Added two filters to tone down and blend the colors a bit, the harsh contrast is still a bit annoyance to me. Used a filter from AK for wood, wich has a brownish orange tone and afterwards I went over with a heavily thinned brown wash from the MIG productions line. Always easy to have a lotta stuff on hand. Let it dry for a day or so I went on and started on the doors with artist oil paints. Winsor and Newton oils blended with Ammo odourless thinner. Used a burned umber to try to get the brownish tone back this cars original have, with a bit of fade that is.. In case I forget to post, join me on my blog https://dirtystuffbymartinwelberg.wordpress.com/2016/08/25/a-german-gmhs-53-boxcar-part-3/
  24. Thanks Phill ! Dunno if you pay to much for the washes. For the enamels I do think they are worth the price and come in a nice range of weathering colors. But yes you can make them yourself like any wash. For the acrylic ones from Vallejo, just like the way they flow, somekinda addition to the paint. I was used to artist paints and still like them alot, artist oils and acrylics have even more value for money, dense paint with loads of pigments but they can also be pretty expencive depending on the color. To be honest I like them all, artist as well as modeling paints..guess I have somekinda fetish about paint since artschool..
