  1. I would assume that if they did that the WNR would charge them demurrage if they were their wagons. Of course, the merchants could be using their own wagons. I'm not sure what the situation was with colliery wagons, but I would think that there would be some sort of disincentive to prevent the merchants holding on to them and so keeping them out of revenue earning service. Jim
  2. Can I ask a question? Why does it jump about so much, doing a wee bit here, then a wee bit there? Is it to do with the order of drawing things. When it comes to laser cutters, like Manuel, I know nothing,! Jim
  3. The good doctor was commissioned by Ernest Maples when Minister of Transport. Marples was a director of Marples Ridgeway, who were building motorways at the time. Need I say more....? Jim
  4. I try and write my instructions with the less experienced modeller in mind, hopefully without being too patronising towards the more experienced. I also try to emphasise the areas which are slightly idiosyncratic. Jim
  5. Won't it just be black and white? I've never seen any photographs from then in colour. :-) Jim
  6. Yep! I reckon he's going to slice it up to make brake blocks and their hangers. Jim
  7. The other issue is producing comprehensive instructions. A kit without instructions is only a set of parts. Jim
  8. But they lasted well into BR days, so should be popular with a wide range of modellers. Jim
  9. Most CR passenger tender locos only had a 'D' link at the front. It was normally carried resting back against the front of the footplate. The train coupling was the one normally used. Jim
  10. I saw a preview of this via the CRA forum. Though I'm not into virtual modelling I am seriously tempted! Jim. edited to correct the dreaded predictive text ;-(
  11. I have two photographs of Symington Station (first station south of Carstairs Junction) which clearly show that, not only has the platform been raised between the times of the photos, but also the window sills and the door and window lintels have also been raised. You can tell this has happened by comparing the levels with the quoins at the corners of the building. Friends of ours bought the then closed building and converted it into a house and he clearly remembers that the window sills were very high inside the house. Jim
  12. Guilty as charged m'lud. There's a link to my thread on it in my signature. The full 3m of the front are scenics, with the goods yard in front of the 'station' end and colliery interchange sidings in front of the cassette area at the other end. Jim
  13. That's the arrangement I have on Kirkallanmuir. The station is beyond the overbridge at one end as is merely hinted at by the rampof the island platform poking under the bridge. the station building will be on the road next to the bridge. Why does a layout have to have a station? There was more (and in my view more interesting) railway outwith stations. Jim
  14. I read somewhere that when the GNR was opened through to London the price of coal in the city fell from 30/- a ton to 7/6d. Jim
  15. It is. It started life as an entry for the S4 society '1884' challenge some years ago, which it won! Jim
  16. Which? 5amps of current or 100 locos all moving at once? My use of the terminal block plugs had nothing to do with their current rating, just that they were cheap and cheerful and easy to wire up, thus complying with my KISS principle. Jim
  17. Could it be an early form of roll-over bar? Predating elf and softly by more than a century! Jim
  18. On Kirkallanmuir I've used these, which are rated at 6amp. The female halves are screwed to the underside of the baseboard and the male halves are on double ended links between the two boards with the wires bound together with spiral cable tidy. There are therefor no trailing cables when the layout is dismantled. Jim Jim
  19. One of the photos of it dismantled definitely shows 6 poles. I wonder what effect that will have on the running? I always understood that there needed to be an odd number of poles to avoid it stopping in what would be the equivalent of 'dead centre'? Jim
  20. Like Jerry I painted it with Humbrol enamels. I just applied a patchy thin coat of grey allowing the foil to slightly show through (I glue the foil matt side up). You could apply a second thin coat. I then dry bush with a 'dark rust' mix. As with all painting jobs, it is best to apply several thin coats in order not to smother the detail. Jim
  21. Is there any particular reason why the bridge and station building have to be in the middle of the platforms? Would it not look better visually if it was at the far end where it would form a visual 'stop' against the backscene? That would ease all the issues around access to the goods facilities and also allow the possibility of it becoming a through station in the future. Jim
