IIRC, Adam of this parish, whose wagons are to be much admired, doesn’t use black at all - he paints his underframes in Humbrol chocolate (as a basis for further subsequent weathering) for exactly this reason.

I rarely use black. I tend to mix it with brown or grey depending on what I'm modelling. Humbrol Mat black and 62 leather being a favourite on underframes. (Copied from Martin Welch's book 'The art of weathering).

  2. Many years ago I bought a Mainline, or Bachmann Std 4. I can't remember which manufacturer it was, but I still have the limited edition certificate somewhere. It was a limited edition because a small number were produced with the number 75019. I bought it because I wanted a Std 4 with that particular number. It has since been weathered and now runs with a replacement Comet chassis after the original one failed! I have no plans to sell it. It is worth more to me than a collector would ever pay, even if I'd never taken it out of the box.

  3. This time of year spraying aerosol in the garden shed isn't a great idea, I've bought an airbrush and I've been using humbrol acrylics 50/50 with humbrol acrylic thinners I'm getting on okay with it

However, I want to use Railmatch acrylics and wondered if its still okay to thin using the Humbrol thinners

All help is appreciated as always

    Chris,

I make my own thinners for acrylic paint, using the method in this video

It works out really cheap. I have no experience of using any other paint thinner combination. The IPA is useful for stripping some kinds of paint and track cleaning. It works out very cheap as well as very useful.

  4. The fire station is a fantastic bargain Bob. I must start calling in the charity shops to see what I can find. The wagons look the part too. Glad you're cracking on with stuff. I was at the NEC this weekend and I can't see me getting much railway modelling done this side of Christmas now. I've started to make some working lamps and have some of the scenic features for my modular layout under construction. One board built, and all the materials collected for the second adjoining board.
