  1. Rails sent an email today saying next Friday (15/04/22) is the official launch day of their refurbished show room. They are doing a special open day so there could be something announced then? They say they will have up to date news from various manufacturers, as distinct for old and out of date news I suppose.

  2. The numbers are different both on the boxes and on the wagons,

I have the earlier logo versions with 5 wagons from each batch

For example 4F-050-001 and 4F-050-002 are the outers from the first batch and 4F-050-005 and 4F-050-006 are outers from the 2nd batch with the corrected bogie side-frames. It is the same for the inners, they have different box numbers. Most of the original batch are sold out anyway although could obviously turn up on eBay etc.

Sound fitting these models is extremely easy. IMHO, I feel it is not worth paying the say £120 extra when you could do it cheaper yourself and fit stay alives.

I wonder if they have improved the electrcial pick ups.

It is indeed very easy in my opinion too but I would still be interested in knowing where the Dapol sounds come from. There is no mention of stay alives in the Dapol spec. either.

  4. I saw these at Alexandra Palace too and the colours did look like a big improvement on the first batch, I see they are also doing sound fitted ones, I wonder what sound project they are using. I should have asked.

  5. This reminds of an episode of Blackadder where the captain of the ship (Tom Baker) said there were 2 schools of thought on having a crew - All the other captain's say you need a crew but he was of the opinion that you did not. The same seems to be the case here for research :)

  6. I saw the interview, and KR models make the point that locos like the Fell were prototypes and changed all the time. Therefore it would be impossible to capture all the variations, or at least impossible without the costs going through the roof. They are catering to a demand and while they are not raising the bar in terms of accuracy or realism like Accurascale or RevolutioN, they are producing models that may never have been produced. They may have errors, which we used to accept in undersize Lima Deltics etc. but they do also have modern mechanisms. You do not have to buy them.  Personally I would have been happy if they made one version of the Fell as accurately as they could and not produced a FrankenFell :)

I think where some people object is when they claim they are highly accurate models, when clearly compromises have had to be made. As I said before, it is the consumer's choice.

I find this amusing because in other threads we've got people demanding less detailed models because that is the way the hobby should be going in their opinion.

You can never make everyone happy. I think there is a difference between less detail (moulded handrails instead of separately fitted metal ones) and less accurate whereby variations made to a piece of rolling stock over its life time are ignored, or in some cases, guesses are made as it is too difficult or time consuming to do research. We then get an impression of the model. A bit like the "generic" coaches. In this case I think the best description of these models is an "interpretation". It is up to each person to decide whether they want to buy or not, and hopefully in the full knowledge of the compromises that have been made and the level of accuracy that has been achieved. For myself, I have decided to pass on this one.

I wish someone would make a class 50 then I would have no Hornby mainline locos

With the 31 now announced, I strongly suspect someone is going to announce a 50 in 2022 and I expect it be from one of the newer manufacturers.

I can’t remember if this was in a later RM, or an earlier MRN article, but Cyril Fry has always stuck in my mind for his (absolutely serious) recommendation that one way to gain extra room for your model railway is to replace your live-in house maid with a “daily”, which he had done.  Different times…

59005 can't be backdated to the other 4, the NRN radio pods are different for one.

Though looking at the samples,  Dapol haven't tooled to do 59005 correctly anyway, so a renumber of 59005 may easily do 001-004.

Yes, I am not sure what to expect. I will have a good look at 59005. I would have to switch the exhaust side too I think. I have have so many projects to do I may wait if they announce another run. Either way something may require correction depending on what compromises have been made.

Oddly enough I was just coming here to comment on the Q1 2023 lead time. It appears that (according to the retailers I have seen comment on this) that the other announced 59s are due Q2 2022.

That leads me to think run 2 is going to be announced soon perhaps?

That is logical. So we will get some 59s this year. I am hoping for one of 59001-4 in original livery in the next run. I may just get 005 and backdate it.

"I wonder why they are rushing the Manor so much"...

I would think to get it released before the Accurascale version hits the shelves.

Both are shaping up to be fine looking models !

    You missed the smilely

  13. I just got an email from Hattons stating Q1 2023 for delivery of the 59. I have never known a model that got to such an advance stage take so long to get completed. There was a pandemic apparently, but on the other side of the equation DJM were not involved.

Other models not even announced when samples of the 59 were shown have made it to market. Even Dapol's own Manor is progressing much more quickly and possibly got the production slot intended for the 59. I wonder why they are rushing the Manor so much :)

Talking simplistically, as far as I understand it an E is an F with the AC system from a D if that makes sense? I.e. that is the main difference between them?

While the D, E and F are all air-con, the D is different. It has a different window arrangement to the E and F. The E and F are the same in this regard to each other but not the D. Hornby made an F using lots of components from their E. You cannot do that for a D. The window arrangement is different. With a bit of modelling you could make an E from an F and vice versa. You would need to start cutting up coach sides to make a D from an E or an F.

Whilst it is not covered, as far as I am aware the difference between D and E, and then E and Fs are quite subtle and therefore how many people are queuing up to buy Es instead of Ds or Fs?

Sorry if this is complete ignorance on my part but I would have thought the differences were subtle enough that a lot of people wouldn't care too much and there are bigger holes in the market than the mk2E. Also, isn't the mk2E the least numerous out of all the mk2s other than the 2B (which whilst AS are doing it, there wasn't any existing model still in production of it as far as I am aware).

The Es and and Fs are very similar alright and it would not take much for Bachmann to do an E. The D is different, the major difference being the position of the toilet windows. The C and D are probably more alike in this regard, albeit with different window frames as the D is air-conditioned. Obviously I am not getting into roof vents and underframe differences.

The Bs and Cs were/are definitely the biggest hole in the market but I am sure there are other people like me who would like Ds and Es to a high standard.

With Mk2b and Mk2c being done by Accurascale, Mk2a and Mk2f by Bachmann and Mk2e by Hornby, that pretty much covers the range save for the oddities like the Manchester Pullmans and the Caley Sleeper BUOs etc.

I do not see the 2E as having being covered. The Hornby model is below the standard of the other Mk2s you mention. I would like to see a better version of the 2D as well.
