  1. Great stuff. Not up to museum standards? Its a Kernow model! This is what the museum needs. I have been asked to come to the museum and help move an old prison cell door (you need to see it to believe it) so will be down there shortly).
  2. Brilliant to hear. It turns out that my mum volunteers at the museum and mentioned about the expansion/change up in the railway section, and that's what sparked me here to see if it was related to further progress with this project. Can't wait!
  3. Hi, Is there any update on this project? It's been half a year so I hope the project hasn't collapsed!
  4. Well, that's it. It's finally over. After deciding to build a new layout earlier in the year, I am now finally able to get on and build it! I had already got Kingbarrow booked for the Weymouth show so I thought I would keep it till then. It was a long wait, and didn't make any progress as I knew it was going to be trashed anyways. The exhibition was great! 30 stunning layouts, and I got to run my layout for the last time... until 10 minutes in... The uncoupling system broke, where the staple had finally ripped off the only uncoupling loco. I thought that I wouldn't need my soldering iron and was the one thing I left behind...which turned out to be the one thing that I needed. I was staying at a different house on Saturday night so I couldn't go and get it. This meant that I could only have an 'in and out' performance on the layout, so the lack of any uncoupling made things dull. Later, I had to take the boards apart (including removing the backboard and light holding board) and had to jump power from one track to another, making the isolators irrelevant and m meant that I could only run trains into one of the main lines and the loop. So you can tell that action on the layout got very boring, very quickly. To add to that, the clips on the boards didn't work so I was constantly re-aligning the boards and trains derailing. I got home, put the boards on the table and got started removing items. I salvaged 95% of the items and trashed the awful hills, the boards which were heavily used which left a rough surface. The only option was the skip, shame! I'm so happy to start my new layout, but so happy that my first layout got me started on doing proper scenery for the first time, and has taught me a lot to make it much better next time. See you around on my new layouts thread, which will be coming soon after I sort out the templates! Thanks for looking. If you've stumbled across this thread in the future then I hope you enjoy a short thread of a layout being born and dying. "It can only get better from this point on" ~ Me every time the locos derailed
  5. Just found a few pictures taken during the building process. The one in the car really shows you my limitations in transport!
  6. It's that time of year again, the layout is off to the Weymouth Model Railway Exhibition, for the last time! Sad to say that next week this layout is being broken up. Since last November, I put the layout back on the table when I got home and haven't touched it in 9 months. A few reasons for this: One is that I can't operate the layout when it's at home, as the power board is put under my desk. This means i've lost interest in the layout and also I can only run in trains if I make an oval on the landing or take my trains to the club once a month. Another is the wiring. I used what I could find from school, so colour coordination was not bothered about, and has certainly annoyed me since. So nothing has happened. The buildings on the backboard still have outlines, the info is outdated on the signs, really the only thing thats progressed is getting a few more locos (pictured). I'm sad that it's going but I'm not too fussed, the layout was the first proper one I built, so there are many flaws such as the tight Hornby curves, screwing up the sidings so no trains can work over the three way point (it's not broken, just wiring) and the ###### hill at the back. So it will be broken up after the show this weekend, which is sad, but I'm looking forward to starting my next layout which will be a First Great Western layout based in the same Devon area. The period would be around the 2000's, With a mixture of Virgin Red, FGW, GWR and privatised freight companies from Freightliner to Colas Rail. Thanks for being part of the small jouney that this layout has been alive for. It's been a great starter layout but i'm really looking forward to start the next ASAP!

  8. A great day for local railway news: More on the Portland Branch - http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/features/lookingback/16269344.How_the_Portland_railway_came_about/ 'More people are using Weymouth station than ever before' - http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/16269298.More_people_in_Dorset_are_using_the_railways_than_ever_before/
  9. Is that Dennis Turner? Really glad you're getting interviews, I've always thought about it but never had the resources. Good luck with it and hope the end result is fantastic.
  10. Surprise from the echo today. It would have been nice to know about this as I own these items but in a much better condition. http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/features/lookingback/16254987.Train_s_final_journey__Looking_back_to_the_pivotal_moment_of_March_27_1965/
  11. Good luck and hope you manage well. I often looked at this thread as it has partly inspired my O gauge quay layout. I really hope I can see this project finished by someone else in the future. Take care.
  12. Just found out about his passing, it is a real shame. As an enthusiast of the railways surrounding Weymouth, including the Portland and Abbotsbury lines, I sometimes ran into John on threads about various discussions and I was always fond of including certain artifacts of the railways into his modelling, most notable his model of Easton Station. I wont mourn over John's death as much as others as I really didn't know him personally, but I sure will miss his new projects and what might have come. I will treasure what he has made and the help he's given to threads. R.I.P
  13. Brian Jackson's books contain clean track diagrams, building blueprints looking from three angles (great for scratch building), and ofcourse a bunch of images you won't find on the internet.
  14. Really love that you're basing the station on Castle Cary, for most of my life I change over at this station so holds a special place in my heart, and seeing it in model form is so delightful! Great work
  15. I'm currently building a large warehouse almost identical to yours, however i'm puzzled on how to make the windows 'top brick curved arches'. Is there a template for the bricks? I'm just not sure how to go ahead and make it without ruining the large structure! If you need pics for what i'm saying my O gauge layout is linked below.
  16. A whole bunch of pictures of the railway can be viewed on my Flickr, yeah sounds normal but this is the first snow that Weymouth has had in 7 years! All gone this morning. Walking back home across the causeway in 70mph winds was not the best idea in the snow: https://www.flickr.com/photos/145870537@N08/ Concerning the layout, nothing has really progressed. I recently purchased a Class 27 from Heljan, these worked in Scotland but will look fine on the layout as Class 33 diesels ran on the line starting in the seventies, albeit not in the British Railways green livery. I also sold my Bachmann 108 in Network SouthEast livery and brought a Class 105 in British Railways green livery. Not really fitting for the layout but I prefer the green over the Network Southeast. Lastly I brought a Hornby FGW 153 as it was offered to me for £80, which I couldn't turn town as they normally sell around £130, and I had been looking for a 153 for a while. Again, not really fitting for the Weymouth layout however that's the stock I will be using to test the layout throughout its construction (If I am building it that is).
  17. Just stumbled upon this thread and i'm more than impressed! This is a stunning diorama, makes a tiny layout look massive. I might have to take the idea of the 'swing' fiddle yard as I have a portable table about 1 and a half meters which I'm trying to find the best possible space saver option. I have a FGW 153 which will probably be the length of the moving table in the fiddle yard. The scenery itself is clean but looks realistic at the same time, my personal favorite route of modelling! Even though it's complete i'd love an update every so often of locos on it!
  18. Sorry if you have pointed this out but it would be a great idea to also use the bottom layer of the cable drum where the mouse is poking out of the hole, multi layer layout with trains in different directions will catch anyone's eye! Maybe two different themes.
  19. Reported in the Echo today, someone who got in touch with this project talks about when trains got held up near the prison, I never knew about this so makes me even more happy that Martyn is doing this! http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/features/lookingback/16034285.why-trains-passing-by-portlands-prison-were-often-held-up/?ref=mr&lp=14
  20. Would this idea to cease all diesel action by 2040 also for preserved railways? It might be a stupid question but like the article, it's very misleading and don't entirely understand the whole story.
  21. Whilst nothing has been posted on this thread I have still been working on the layout...just...slowly. I've started to make the wagon turntable out of a CD holder! using the stalk to manually turn the plate. The tracks have been soldered but still need to include the four 'middle' tracks and the wooden cover over the top of the whole surface. I have also attached the hinges to the underside of the board connecting the dock area to the main board. It does look a bit dis-jointed however it needs to be able to be detached as it sits under the bed. A new wagon arrived, brought for £28 and mainly got it because it has the word Weymouth on it. Yes I know its not much but can be interpreted as an Easter egg to Weymouth Quay, and oh boy am I in love with that line And finally, the loco is in a poor state. Not due to it costing near-to-nothing but one of the buffer's got lost at my expense, and the side rods, being plastic, wont budge the other wheels so they are bending. The two rear wheels move the side rods which move the middle and front wheels so when a plastic rod is pushing them to move no wonder its going to bend at some point. Will need to replace them with metal road and get a new buffer. Other than that it's alright Till next time I will be working on the warehouse and the structure to keep it stood up. Oh and I've called the layout Tenner Quay, as it all started form a ten quid loco
  22. A trip to the Weymouth Library today helped out with a few new images. Some very good illustrations from the 'Buildings of Weymouth Book 2' Various books included a picture or two, every little helps! 4th July 1930, Mainly for the building on the left. And ofcourse, no walk around Weymouth misses out a stroll along the harbourside The pictures of the line that I'm not modelling can be seen on my Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/145870537@N08/
  23. You'd think I wouldn't, but I do have exactly that I was given 6 A1 survey sheets of the line from the 90's in a 1:500 scale along with a load of other paperwork when they were testing the parry people mover's down the line, video of that working here: They sadly don't have the points as they were covered up by then (not removed!) so they unfortunately aren't on the survey. And also this evening I was very frustrated to be beaten in an auction for a Dapol Cosens wagon, it would have been perfect for the layout! I could have one it but I'm not paying £30 for a OO wagon, ugh.
  24. Decided to go for a stoll after college past the quay corner and didn't expect this nice sunset in January! Took some pictures where the point used to be to try and have a better idea of the radius. It seems the be the same size as the Peco curved point but not as sharp radius as the Peco curved point. Think scratch building is the only way. There are also some abandoned buildings next to the point, are they the original buildings from the 30's?
  25. Would love some recorded footage on the layout in operation at the exhibition. Sadly I can't attend due to money being tight (for travel costs mainly) but I still want to see this run!
