  1. Mine was given away free, as a local crime prevention promo in the lobby of my local Tesco (other supermarkets are available) Neil
  2. I will have to get one of these. Can any tell me how much a Peckett B2 differed from a Peckett X, Obviously the X had inside cylinders, but other than that they look very similar to my non expert eyes thinking 'Lord Salisbury' here. EDIT Just noticed the splashers above the footplate on Lord Salisbury, so likely bigger wheels, not just an inside cylinder version of the same thing. I will still get one though. regards Neil
  3. Ok that seems to cover it. For my fictional line no brake vans required. Thanks to all for your help. Regards, Neil
  4. Which do you mean the 2Ps or the coaches? I thought Maunsell sets 390-399 were allocated and Ivo Peter's books show various sets being pulled by 2Ps. A nice photo of a gleaming 40568 comes to mind? Neil
  5. I would like to see an S&D train pack, consisting of a 2P in BR lined Black with a Maunsell 3 coach low window set in blood & custard. They have all the parts already, + nice livery. Neil
  6. Hi, Have been tempted by the Siren that is the Hornby Peckett, I am playing around with some plans for an industrial layout. What I have in mind is a small scale operation with wagons being transferred from the factory to an exchange siding on the mainline an unspecified distance away. The company use their own locomotive(s?) for this. My question is would they use a railway company brake van for the journey, or as it will only be at maximum half a dozen wagon would they just rely on the loco with no brake van at all? Now I know the answer might be 'It depends' so any input on typical practice would be much appreciated. Regards, Neil
  7. I happened across the same issue when trying some Wills granite setts between the tracks. I seemed to have solved it by fitting some small magnets to the end of the dropper after bending the bottom 2mm of it 90° these work by opposing the magnet under the sett, thereby lifting the dropper without anything dropping below track level. I have only tried this quickly this morning between dropping the poor wife off for a 12 hour Christmas shift and my daughters getting up. I will test more during the holiday. EDIT This proved not to work as well as I had hoped, with the presence of the magnet making the droppers magnetic enough so stick to the dropper on the next wagon. I might try going back to staples, but with the ends bent up towards the back with the magnet on the end, maybe this will have enough attraction to the under sett magnet, but remain clear of grounding. Neil, PS I see above in the thread that someone referred to this as my system. So just to make it clear it is Brian Kirby's, not mine we both just happen to share the same surname. Neil
  8. Hi, My 40 year old copies of Railway Modeller turned up today, and I can confirm that it was Allied Marine that I was thinking of. I must say that my memory seems to have enhanced it slightly over the intervening years though. Thanks for you help everyone. Regards, Neil
  9. Hi KernowTim & Wheatley, Now that does ring a bell with me, Just been online and bought a Nov 78 railway modeller. (which I might already have in the loft!) It may well have been at Central halls I saw it, as I seem to recall a big crowd around me that you don't get at too many 'local' shows. I will keep you posted when the magazine turns up. thanks Neil
  10. Hi Andy, Thanks for the interest, No I wasn't that one, although it was similar in concept. The one I am thinking of was more claustrophobic, with heavier engineering. I think it was all on the flat as well. I should mention that it was 4mm scale as I never said that in the OP. Walker Engineering though is a lovely looking layout. and hopefully will inspire me to make a start on my plan! Neil
  11. Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me with a vague(ish) memory. I visited a few exhibitions back in the late 70s / early 80's where a standard gauge industrial layout was present, It was quite large and represented a complex sprawling factory scene, which looks like it may have started smaller and been added to numerous times. I think it may have been called 'Standard Marine' or something similar. I most likely saw it at either Wimbledon or Hampton Court Club shows. Does anyone remember this? or better still, have any photos? Regards, Neil
  12. I have a Dapol one from 1st release , and a recent Hornby one, and as far as I remember they are the same inside. the only thing I found different was the ballast weight in the Hornby on is nowhere near as heavy! In fact I am pretty sure I have swapped the wheelsets (inc gear) over between the two at some point Regards, Neil
  13. Hi WD0-6-0, I am currently waiting nameplates from Narrow Planet, can I ask what method you used to remove the number off the tank? Regards, Neil kirby
  14. I started my model of Radstock North A signal box more than 20 years ago, it ground to a halt due to a number of factors mainly because I i could not work out what was going on under the stairs landing, but also mortgage, children, job etc. It sat on the top shelf of my desk as an empty shell, much like this but without any of the brackets under the deck. During these years it was knocked down twice by the cat and glued back together each time That was until about 2 years ago when on re-reading my C. Handley Radstock book, I realised there was a toilet was under the stairs before the 50s rebuild as well as after. I continued the work (after having stripped out the few windows I had fitted as they had yellowed over the years). it now looks like this: Regards, Neil
  15. It was Langley, and it is an anti-balance plough. I think I thought Scalelink as I may have bought it from them. Neil
  16. Someone does a kit for the plough ( Is it called an anti-balance plough?) I want to say scale link, but am unsure. I will look in the stash later. Neil
  17. More seriously, If you want to have all three varieties of 7F running, which were the original 1914 built version, the 1925 built large boiler and 1925 converted to small boiler (as per the Bachmann model) they are not that big a job See here for the 1914 type: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/108502-converting-Bachmann-7f-to-1914-build/ And her for the large boiler type: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/117896-converting-a-Bachmann-7f-to-the-large-boilered-variety-now-with-various-other-sd-bits/&do=findComment&comment=2700892 Regards, Neil
  18. Hi, Jinty!? What's a Jinty? If we are on the S&D they look like 'Bagnalls' to me Neil
  19. There still are allotments along side the Shepperton branch in Hampton. Regards, Neil
  20. Hi, Thank you both for your interest. Yes the area behind the main building is meant where the mainline comes from, and is also the fiddle yard area so is un-seen, I put points & short sidings in there on the drawing, but was also thinking a cassette type system would work. IMT, I also thought about using a Peco double-slip in there somewhere as I have one in the spares box, but was unsure how much they were used in an industrial setting? Flying Pig, Working inbound trains to the main building will be easy, but I hadn't thought too much about how they would be worked back out. (but then neither did the works engineer in 1917! I believe he was finally persuaded to retire in 1919 when his previous young assistant returned to Blighty from the Royal Engineers! I was thinking that layout be intentionally awkward. with the run around in front of the new works only holding 2 or 3 wagons. I think full wagons from the main building siding could be worked two at a time to the runaround outside the new works, then formed into a train in the basin siding to be worked back to the mainline (hope that makes sense!) Neil
  21. Hi, I am thinking about building a small freelance industrial layout as a prelude to my longtime planned retirement project. I have sketched out a track plan and a back story, and am interested in opinions as to whether this is a viable plan. Note that I used various track makes in Anyrail just to show roughly what I was thinking: Back Story C. A. Kirby Engineering is a small old industrial complex very vaguely related to military equipment or munitions work. The main building was originally fronted to a canal basin, at some point this basin gained railway access, but during WWI is was part filled to allow direct railway access to the factory instead. A short time later the 'New' works was built and a second hand Peckett bought to handle the traffic. During WWII a new Andrew Barclay was bought due to increased demands. Peckett to be named 'Cambrai', and Barclay to be 'El Alamein' Layout to be set between 1945-1955 The mainline is offstage to the top right, behind the main building. It will be 5' x 1' and the idea behind this is to be used to practice skills on something small enough to finished and that the tight fit between buildings will give some interesting run-around options All comments and observations welcome. Neil
  22. Hi, Has anyone found a clean method of removing the '560' and writing off the 'Works' Peckett, I tried my normal method of a quick flood of non-Acetone nail varnish remover and a wipe with a cotton bud. I don't know if Hornby have changed their method of applying markings but this time it took the green off the edge of the footplate as well. which no great loss as can just repaint that black, but I also want to get the '560' neatly off the tank ready for the narrow planet nameplates I have on the way. Regards Neil
  23. Hatton's website now saying: "Due into stock on or after Monday 29th October 2018"! I had been hoping to receive mine this week, Neil
  24. If you want the type where the writing is white on the black box/ plank. I have done some for ex-PO wagons using white decal paper printed black. they printed OK, but the some of the toner flaked off when cutting out the black boxes. I have more to to and will try with a new blade this time. Neil
  25. Hi, Has anyone received their pre-order from Hattons yet? no sign of mine, and still showing October on their website? Neil
