  1. Running in would be first line of attack but if IIRC others have reported similar issues which they have cured by dismantling cleaning regreasing and reassembling the gear train

    Phil

Blimey did BR have to go to those lengths??!! Will give that process a go.Thanks for the info Phil,

    Neil

    PS hows your Zambesi looking?

  2. Phil, I think you're absolutely right about the gearing.

Having done the detailing on my 43 "Zealous", I did some work including a service on an old 42 BSYP, "Monarch", which I've had for years and only test run. I am still on analogue, and the 43 has a very high top speed and struggles to crawl. By contrast the old 42 is much better at slow speed and has a far more sensible top speed.

I'm sure someone will say I need to join the 21st century, but....!

    John.

I've bought a few Bachmann 43's,great models. However, some of mine make a grinding sound from one bogie, maybe I've inadvertently bought some with built-in Voith transmission sounds.Do they benefit from lots of running in? By contrast, I've just finished a repaint,re-name etc.on a Bachmann 42 that's been stashed away and not seen the light of day for years,a touch of oil and it runs smoothly and virtually silently.

    Am analogue too..

  3. Yep,have seen that one,and the following image also states that one of the Warships is Warrior,at Newton Abbot. No disrespect whatsoever to the photographer, but neither image is 100% identifiable as D863.There must be other pictures out there...

  4. Phil,

Here is a (frankly rubbish) scan of the shot of D864 I mentioned. I'm afraid printing in 1960's IA Combines wasn't that great, but I hope it helps.

Interesting that the wheel rims are quite shiny, so I guess this must have been taken soon after shopping.

If K.M. Knight is reading this and objects to his photo being used, I will gladly remove it, otherwise a big thanks to you sir!

    John.

    Hello John,

I have that Combine somewhere, but had it in my mind that the OOC shot was more head-on,thanks for sharing.

There are one or two published shots of Zambesi in Swindon after the collision, but pictures in that scheme in service seem to be non-existant.

A bit like colour pictures of Warrior in blue...

  5. Unless I have missed it, a book which does not get a mention in this thread : A Tribute to the Hymeks. Author : Chris Neill. Publisher :A&C Services. ISBN I-904285-03-1.

Apart from front and rear covers in colour, all b/w content.Lots of works history, livery details, and some fascinating info on the last workings of each loco.

The author's intro is dated May 2003,so chances are the book will be hard to track down.

  6. Back on 1st June 1996,I was having a day's photography on the farm bridge at Cholsey, just east of Didcot.Although there was still much of interest to see at that time,I really wanted a picture of the Saturday Leeds to Southampton freightliner. It was a fine still evening, but as time wore on I thought it was running too late for a photo.I took a shot of a 47-hauled liner,at which point the slide film (remember them?) in my camera rewound. I was just about to call it a day when the unmistakable 37 sound was heard, new film quickly loaded! The train, which must have been running in the next section back, soon appeared, and a shot was duly recorded of 37058 and 37131 thundering past-superb! I saw this working several times that summer, many of the 37's used were not in exactly exemplary external condition.

Also, the  train being hauled by 37906 on a SVR Diesel Driving experience sometime around July 2009 was pretty good,I was driving it!

  7. On the Monday 6th -

809 was on the 11.20 Bristol - Old Oak Common

841 was on the 11.15 Paddington - Worcester and 16.15 return

853 was on the 12.15 Worcester- Paddington and 17.15 return

854 was on the 15.00 Kensington to Plymouth but it failed at Reading and D1040 took over.

    On Saturday 11th -

807 was on the 12.10 Paddington - Paignton

835 was on the 10.15 Paddington - Paignton

841 was on the 11.15 Paddington - Worcester

861 was on the 15.00 Kensington - Plymouth. Guess what? It failed at Reading and D1044 took over!

    On Saturday 18th -

842 was on the 14.15 Worcester - Paddington

855 was on the 15.15 Paddington - Hereford.

    Have you any pictures?

Have you got any more notes? All notes help add info to the workings I've got and are fascinating and also help confirm what actually happened...

    Mark

    Hey Mark,

Thank you so much for your reply and the info therein.Regarding my day at Reading, I can remember 841 coming in on the down Worcester, and without sounding too soppy, seeing Champion that day is one of my fondest memories of a Warship at work.Into the afternoon that day and the unmistakable front end shape of a Warship came into view from the Bristol direction. It was held at signals{Scours Lane?} for what seemed like ages, and eventually got the road. She took the through line between the main platforms, and although my memory could be playing tricks,I think power was applied as a signal at the East end cleared. Marvellous...

I do have some photo's, taken on an Instamatic I got for Xmas 1971,but I was a mere 12 with no idea about photography,so they're not great.

I was in contact with Martin a couple of years or so back,he was kind enough to supply details of some of my observations as you have done. I did give him a list of all my Warship sightings in 71 and 72,would be happy to do the same for you. I started spotting at Southall in 1968,and although I cant remember why, I started keeping records from 71 to the end of 73,when I packed it in.

As far as railway interest goes,I count myself fortunate to have been born in the era I was,and to have grown up where I did, enabling me to see the majority of the main line hydraulic fleet, these loco's have left a lasting impression. Maybe a view shared by other contributors to this section,,

  8. My mates and I used to walk from Greenford to Southall for spotting on the footbridge. When walking past the then rail-served oil depot,we could glance through to Southall shed, and invariably a 22 would be parked there. We probably groaned at seeing one of the Old Oak Common examples again...Saw them often at Paddington, also at Reading, and of course on their home depot. 6356 stands out for being in excellent external condition. All success to the New Build group...

  9. Am new to RMWEB so a bit late with these notes, but thought they may be of interest.

A day at Reading on 6 9 71 [last day of the school holidays] produced:

841,853 and 854. [Also D809 on Malago Vale to Old Oak Common vans].

    On 11 9 71,at Ealing Broadway and Southall, 835,841 and 861. [Also 807].

On 18 9 71,while at the GWS/BR Didcot open day,842 and 855, Triumph being the last 43 I saw in service.

A fascinating class, with a great series of names....

    Neil.
