Both depots were visited, then the day was spent on the footbridge from the canal tow path over the exit from OOC's carriage sidings.A few points of interest:Westerns Rifleman and Emperor were noted as double heading, not common at this end of the WR.D7081 was probably already in store, having apparently been damaged by fire the previous month-the Hymek with the shortest working life? 857 came down from the West London line on empty milk tanks.
This bridge gave a good view of passing freights on the West London line.

Do you mean like this?

I do have my spotting books from the day, but currently buried under all my other railway stuff in the garage, you may have to be patient!
Mike.
Yep,exactly like that!! Very atmospheric picture, could be 5530 or 5536 just in shot too...Any more pictures in due course would be great,as would the contents of your spotting books!!

Reminds me of the story I was once told by a relief signalman who used to work the boxes on the Berks & Hants line. He used to choose his picks for the pools coupon from the last two numbers of the Westerns that passed by during the last shift he did before a Saturday.
I've used some of the Hydraulic class designations for my lottery numbers since it started. Guess what? I'm still having to work.....

Regrettably not from me, as an impoverished 17 year old apprentice, money was tight, it either went on rail fares or film in varying percentages, I must have been flush that weekend, took quite a few pics in London village.
Mike.
I was a 12 year old urchin whose money went on watching QPR and/or spotting trips to the London termini and the like.Did you take any Warship pictures that day,and do you still have a record of what you saw...???

I've been keeping my powder dry on this one, but now you can have it!
Mike.
Cracking shot Mike. I have D1057 logged at Southall on 7 4 71,and at Ealing Broadway the day after. A further sight of Chieftan was on the occasion of the Reading depot open day on 19 6 71.Of course,to my young eyes back then,it was just another Western.Wish I could remember more of those times....

Not an especially high quality photo (taken on an iPad in low light) of D6327 now nearing completion (a bit more weathering, pipework and crew to fit). D6 and 40066 on the last stages too with headcode discs, wipers and roof fan to fit.
I'll get the SLR out later.IMG_2039.JPG

Hi Neil,
22 looking good.I have done the same repaint myself,a bit tricky getting the yellow panel square with all the bits on front of loco. What a difference a repaint makes to the rather insipid Dapol blue.
Will you be adding some coolant streaks from the fan area? Will look forward to seeing your D6..

I can only echo Neil's comments about the show - many thanks to the Newbury club committee for inviting us, covering costs and arranging accommodation. The recommendation for a curry for the Friday night - Chillies, which is right next to the station - was also top notch, excellent food. The only thing missing there was the background sound of Westerns hammering through as we ate....
Neil's comment based on his first trip out with us are also very kind. Yes it is a huge amount of work and we were all absolutely whacked by the close of play yesterday. I could not do it without a robust crew and Pierre, Neil and Digby yesterday were top notch. We did have some initial challenges - the lead connecting ECoS to the layout was shorting and needed resoldering and stock was initially recalcitrant but those issues were quickly sorted. I also managed to compromise a couple of signals during installation so apologies to those who rightly pointed out our consistent spading.
Digby was also a first timer but also got to grips quickly. The ideal situation is if I can leave the crew to operate and leave myself free to trouble shoot and that worked very well yesterday. I was also able to do a bit of driving with my iPhone which as Jimbo has pointed out makes for slicker operations. We also acquired an additional crew member! A young lad approached us on Friday evening during set up and plainly knew the layout well - he had seen us on Youtube, We therefore told him to report back for duty on Saturday.
We couldn't spend time with him at the beginning due to the issues mentioned above but he came back later and rapidly picked up how to drive - and Neil was kind enough to spend a long time supervising. The public display continued as usual but there was also hopefully one very hatppy young man. As Neil said above the way ECoS is configured makes it pretty intuitive as long as you can remember which folder the routes are lurking in.
Thanks also to the many RMwebbers who dropped by - great to put a face to Neil 40034 and Colin Penfold in particular . I was also badgered by the folks from the purveyor of scenic items to purchase an appropriate item of wildlife - photo to follow
All in all a great day out - and the news when we got home re the rugby result was the icing on the cake although the Welsh contingent were not happy...
Hee hee
Phil
Hi Phil,
Great to meet you and Neil at Newbury on Saturday. No doubt a lot of hard work for you to transport and set up for a one-day show.
Abbotswood is a top layout, with terrific loco's and stock, keep up the good work!
Neil

My parents retired to Chandlers Ford, and upon visiting them and exploring the area I was amazed to come across the Mainly Trains emporium in the precinct.
I bought lots of stuff there, admittedly all r-t-r,and the service was always friendly and helpful.
All the best to the owners in their retirement.

Thanks to plural Neils - Downendian and t-other Neil too!
Will be great to see you both
Have done 864 underframes with Precision Pullman Umber over grey primer and thus far am not impressed. Needs going over again possibly with some added black.... looks much too pale. Will post a picture tonight although the light wont be good!
And yup its a tough life in Churchdown works.....! Poor old Jimbo has had two bouts of norovirus since Christmas and has been suffering from cabin fever too...hence my encouragement. Tough love. He was game for starting 3 more warships but I suggested it might be a good idea to get those in hand completed first...so if we get these done for Newbury there could be a further batch done for Nottingham in March!
Phil
Regarding Newbury-likewise! Thanks for the paint info.Look forward to seeing the result.
Give the lad a break...!

Hi Neil - Newbury appearance certainly is still on - see link on my signature. Will you be paying a visit?
Zambesi had hit the buffers once transferred and varnished as Jimbo - the spray gum meister - has been ill since Christmas
However good news - he materialised this afternoon and was rapidly pointed in the direction of the spray gun! Zambesi's underframes were first on the hit list - followed by D6975 AND D326's FYEs, along with roof and frame dirt on D838, D1584, D125, D849 and D8175
So plenty of new power for Newbury if progress continues at that rate - although D1584 and D843 need a trip to Howes for Bryan to weave his magic, that will no doubt cost me another visit to Huffkins in Burford....
And started the "A" exams on all the other power today too....
Phil
Hello Phil,
Will be paying a visit to Newbury, easy for me to get to.And,with all the additions to your fleet, better bring my Combined Volume...
So Jimbo (your son?) gets out of his sick bed and is forced into the spray booth immediately-it's a harsh regime at your place...
Huffkins in Burford-a Chipping Norton set hang-out..?? Can I ask what colour/paint manufacturer you used for D864's u/frame please? I have one to do myself.
Cheers,
Neil

Robert, thanks for posting a query on the Yahoo Hydraulics group. And as is usually the case the answer emerged - from Martin Street - thank you both, Gentlemen.
All Warships had their MU jumpers removed around 1965 and, as is common knowledge, a number of the Swindon loco’s had them refitted in early 68 for the 2 x 42 diagrams on the West of England services. However, prior to this it would appear Old Oak carried out a trial working of pairs of type 43’s in mid 67, refitting D833, D835, D857 and D864. The cables were soon removed from the first two but they stayed on the later two. In fact D857 even had the white diamonds painted on the buffer beam similar to the Class 42’s. I don’t believe that the MU cables were ever used after the short trial.
So that's no MU cables in this livery then. And in the absence of other photos have had to make some assumptions....
If anyone with access to any other photos spots an error please shout - will seal the transfers with varnish in a couple of days, then there is no going back!
Cheers
Phil
Any Zambesi update Phil?
btw,is your appearance(and presumably Abbotswood) at Newbury next month still happening?
Neil

Presumably another option would be to take out the gears and use it as a free-running unpowered loco for double heading - I've never tried this but it is a thought.
Funnily enough I stumbled over an old Craftsman conversion kit for the disc front Warship when I went to a Toyfair in Newark on New Year's Day - for a fiver it would have been rude to leave it in the tray! Is this how you did yours?
John.
Evening John,
Yep,a double header would look good, would remind me of seeing them belting through Southall when I were t'lad...
I tried the Craftsman conversion a while ago, went at it like a bull in a china shop and the donor Mainline 42 was a write off.Lesson learned.Had one more Mainline left,so tried again.Took a lot more time, checking cut on front as I went, and it has panned out quite well. It's in u/coat till I get a can of diesel green, will be D811.The extra lamp on the nose needs careful lining up.
A fiver? Can't go wrong!! Will you use Mainline or Bachmann for yours?
Neil
-
Of course there is always an alternative option for those old Mainline warships....
Phil
Shameful. Call yourself a Warship fan...??
-
The Hermes crest was printed on the mainline model Neil, as you say I don't recall an etched plate being available.
Despite being non-motorised, I was pleased with the purchase, it has been well weathered.
Edit Phil beat me to it!
Neil
Yep,remember it now,and being pleased with a really decent Warship model.
As said previously, would like to know in the fullness of time how you motorise Hermes!
Neil
-
It was on the original model Neil...
Mainline did a pretty good job....
Phil
Hi Phil,
That jogged my memory,I did have a couple of those way back when.Think I had a green one,Highflyer maybe?
A great model for it's day..
Neil
-
Hi Neil
Yes I've given it some thought- the mainline motor housing looks too small for a DVD motor (my scheme for remotoring Lima diesels). I plan to double motor it, or use a Bachmann chassis as I've got some spare bits from a D804 model that suffered Mazak rot.
I will look further into this, as I have a few Mainline warships of old.
823 does indeed have the HMS Hermes crest, it's at the far end!
Neil
Neil,
Thanks for the info. A DVD motor sounds intricate! I was wondering if the current R/Road motor bogie might fit.
I took my time with the Craftsman disc h/c fitting,it's panned out ok. My plan is to use a D804 model for a 2nd conversion, even though the Mazak curse has struck, although not too badly.
Second hand traders still seem to ask for daft prices for Mainline 42's...
Didn't know the Hermes crest was available, could be one on the to do list..

The Genesis 1/557 (Marcroft built) diesel brake tender now approaching completion.
Still to do lamp irons, handrails and brake wheels. I've spent a few minutes trying to locate a purchase from 51L this afternoon to no avail which included the correct pattern brake wheels- they will turn up (I hope).
Still to complete is the 1/555 with heavy duty Gresley bogies (the MJT castings need a bit of a rework to get the wheels in), and a 1/556 long body Stanier bogies. They've been getting some attention the past week.
Some pitfalls along the way with the Marcroft tender. The bogie mounting points needed adjusting in order to get the Stanier bogies to fit, they are Bachmann spares, and I'm quite pleased with how they are mounted. They are bolted on, but some degree of suspension is provided by mounting the bogie on some fishing rubber rig tubing! The bolts grip the white metal well, ably assisted with PTFE tape. The fox transfers are lovely, although the "XP" decal is a trifle too big, I've still yet to add more decals. The yellow warning panels, don't try and shortcut this by not using the white backing transfer- guess how I know this! Although the Genesis kit is overwidth, but I'm pleased with the results.
A bit of a cosmetic shot here, 823 is an unpowered mainline warship I've recently picked up for a tenner, as it has a rather excellent weathering job. I will endeavour to power this up at some point this year.
The ballast brake van (a Cambrian kit) is now nearly complete needing decals and weathering, and is behind 823.
Neil
Hi Neil,
The Mainline Warship looks good, does it have the ship's crest?
I have backdated an ancient Mainline Warship to disc headcode configuration.Needless to say,the motor packed up years ago.Do you have any ideas/advice on how to motorise it,what do you have in mind for yours?
Cheers,
Neil.
-
Thanks John
Yes agree with the timing of that photo - she looks fresh off! And am also favouring umber buffer beam and buffers - I reckon that was the same on D1733.
The MU being removed and reinstated is a bit puzzling - decided the scan of the OOC picture wasn't clear enough but if clearly missing then that's how she will be modelled.
And as for Neil's comments re stripping and cleaning the drive gears - I suspect if that was all BR had to do to them they would have been much happier.....!!
Cheers
Phil
Just realised-you said you are doing Zambesi in it's first BR blue version. So my comment is not very relevant-sorry...!!
Western Identification Sought
in Diesel Hydraulic Group
Posted
Hi Billy,
By a huge coincidence,I was also on a family holiday in Cornwall in August 1972,and on the 8th I absented myself from family stuff and took the "CRE" from Penzance to Plymouth, hauled by Western Centurion. I took the long walk to Laira, and managed to get around the depot. If you had done the same, your wish of seeing Warships in service would have come true! There were 6 serviceable examples there, plus 3 in store. But,to the point of your question,it may(or may not) help your identification if I listed the Westerns I saw that day, both at the station and at Laira:
D1026 D1036 D1046 D1057(which hauled my train back to Penzance) D1009 D1021 D1038 D1054 D1059 D1063 D1008 D1011 D1013 D1019 D1023 D1024 D1028 D1031 D1033 D1042 D1051 D1053 D1054 806 Cambrian was seen at the station. Some of these Westerns were seen both at Laira and the station.I am not a Western recognition expert by any stretch, but maybe this list might narrow down the i.d. of the loco in your picture..?
Neil
